Their so-called dedication to privacy is nothing more than smoke and mirrors & feel-good marketing-speak

Not exactly.
Apple, Alphabet and Amazon have a vested interest in NOT selling your data.
The interest in not selling your data comes from selling their own products and services.

Facebook and other social media companies have a business model that includes selling your data.
You are the product.

With Apple, Alphabet and Amazon, they have products and services they want to you to buy.
Selling your data would be but a small drop in the bucket of their overall revenue. They can afford, not to sell your data; at least for now.

I disagree. And a comment from some nobody on the internet won’t change that.
So let me ask you this, if Apple was so committed to privacy as they like to claim, why then have they not dumped Facebook integration from iOS? Why is Google still the default search engine for iOS/Safari? Why do they take potshots at Google over privacy yet still keep them around?

Btw, thanks for degenerating the conversation into name calling.

I wish Apple had their own search engine. They could use privacy as a high bragging point. “Apple Search” with a simple Apple logo I think would prove to be popular. They are the only ones that could take on Google search as the Apple brand itself is so popular that many would consider using it, especially if they made it the default on all of their devices. I realise that this will most definitely not happen though as Google has years of experience and is pretty much ingrained into everyone’s head and within pop culture as the only search engine for the entire internet but I can dream.
Not quite what you want, but Apple does allow you to select DuckDuckGo as your default search engine for Safari.

In the UK, people with company secrets often take "gardening leave" for some months, before moving to a competitor.

They often afford this, as the new company pays them during this period, or they are well paid enough to not have to worry about a few months off work.

Lucky them!

This privacy stuff is pure marketing. The cloud can offer hundreds of times better data processing than any local ML/AI ever would. Then cache to the local client device during network connection, ready for when offline or slow.

Apple know this full well, and this hire is a step in that direction.

A mix of the two is an obvious thing.

Well, THAT is an aggressive move, and good on them!

Because in the US as a general rule we're not into indentured servitude anymore. No one should be forced to work for one company for life or have to exit to a new career.
The enforceability of non-compete contracts varies from state to state.

Hmm, iOS still has Facebook integration? That's interesting:

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/05/facebook-twitter-integration-eliminated-ios-11/

And there's simply no other search engine of similar quality to Google that doesn't treat data in a similar way. Crossing my fingers that Apple starts to make DuckDuckGo default at some point- they're pretty good.

Either way, Apple's record on privacy speaks for itself. And two minor blemishes (one of them questionable in veracity) do nothing to change that. Based on your signature though, I don't expect you to agree.

They literally have. Even before, no one made you sign into Facebook on iOS.

Why is Google still the default search engine for iOS/Safari? Why do they take potshots at Google over privacy yet still keep them around?
Because Google pays them to, and again, other options exist for those who care to change it. No one makes you use Google.

Well I hope this is leading to fixing Siri, let alone making it do anything advanced. But it’s also very very very annoying to see the executives rake in 22 million of stocks, and yet they seem to only be interested in fixing Siri after a number if reports publically damning the thing!
So they reap the rewards, but only fix stuff when forced to essentially, what a great way to run a company and treat your customers..

Yeah I soon set DuckDuck as my default after the Facebook privacy controversy. If Apple made their own though and set it as their default (highly unlikely), then more people will be willing to switch which could give Google some much needed competition. They could drill home the fact that Google tracks them and collects their data, while Apple is all about privacy and
protecting their users.

The US is very decentralized compared to other countries. Rules vary a lot by state. While many states allow such clauses, called non-competes in the US, they are virtually unenforceable in California. That's great for tech because it makes it much harder for companies to monopolize ideas.

He’ll be working on the automobile self driving AI project...not Siri.

My guess is this guy likes a challenge. And the big challenge for him would be to apply ML and AI to allow Apple to offer better services (like Siri or search) AND also maintain privacy.

I think so too. If money is only thing that he want then Google also pay him too but this challenge isn’t exist at Google so he move to Apple.

Google knows Apple tends to be the good kid. They don’t do things like have their CEO sit on the board of a partner to find out what they are doing while planning to be a competitor behind their back.
Oof

It is assuming this guy sticks around long enough, unlike Siri's founders.
I think he will. He work at Apple in position that report directly to Tim so I think he thought about this a lot before make a move.
