Well, THAT is an aggressive move, and good on them!

Because in the US as a general rule we're not into indentured servitude anymore. No one should be forced to work for one company for life or have to exit to a new career.

That applies to “non-compete” clauses, but not to non disclosure clauses, which are still quite common.

"Many believe Siri has serious shortcomings in comparison to AI offerings from other companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google due to Apple's heavy focus on privacy."

Really? Only many? How about the whole tech community, and any one who has used siri.

This is the problem: Apple fanboys not recognizing there is a problem and defending Tim useless Cook till the end. I honestly thank everyone on here who has criticizes Apple, who had the intelligence and fortitude on here to say, "wait a minute, why does my Siri suck"

Apple is changing course, hiring more people, and investing in Siri. I HONESTLY believe Tim would not have done that if there wasn't an outcry from people saying "not good enough Apple".

I'm honestly so sick of hearing, "But Tim has increased profits!" Yes yes he has. Except Apple products are at an all time high premium, and sure don't have premium features anymore!

Anyways, how about them Mac Pros ;)

I see people on twitter saying the board should name this guy CEO. Good grief. He hasn’t even started yet. And how do we know he’d even make a good CEO?

Sure, lots of us have clauses that preclude us from jumping to a competitor -- but they have time limits...mine is a year.

Any good engineer will bring along the value of the failures which can be and often is more valuable than the failures.
Going down a failed path burns resources and time.

Having an engineer say, "I tried that and it doesn't work", allows you to move on to different ideas that may bear fruit.
I've been doing this a long time and those non-compete agreements are about as good as the stuff that comes in squares on a roll that you wipe with.
Every engineer worth her salt will do things differently/better on a subsequent rewrite -- its what we do.

In the UK, people with company secrets often take "gardening leave" for some months, before moving to a competitor.

They often afford this, as the new company pays them during this period, or they are well paid enough to not have to worry about a few months off work.

Lucky them!
yup, how it works here as well.

I had no idea how dated siri was until I started using google assistant regularly, and the gap has one grown since then

night and day difference

this seems like a good move, hopefully this really improves Siri!

I read the article yesterday that talk about google taking him out of that role. And the way the article spoke about this man I said he would be a great fit with Apple..I’m starting to get excited for 2019 and Siri...just PLEASE don’t make us have to buy new hardware to experience whatever’s coming!

Lol, you do know what company your talking about, anything new is only for the latest hardware, even if technically it can run on the last gen device.. we have already seen this many times. How do you think Apple makes money, they make you upgrade every year.

Finally. Thank god. And he’s reporting directly to Cook. If it isn’t I hope it becomes an SVP position. Deserves that importance.

Hey Tim, where's all your user data?

Tim: We don't have any. That's our selling point.

Google Dude: so how am I suppose to build an A I data base and get this going for you?

While I usually have a positive experience with Siri...she could be a lot better. Hoping this takes the virtual assistant to new levels.

I’m amongst a world wide crowd that really doesn’t want a listening and recording device called Google in my home, on my phone, in my computer, in my life - period. I’m serious.

So I’m cool with Siri’s lagging. Those of you Echo lovers - enjoy being recorded taking a .... because you’ll be buying that roll of toilet paper Amazon Ad’ed you to death for

There go my data from Apple profiles!

Time to buy more Apple stocks, if Apple's mode goes the Google way.

Not exactly.
Apple, Alphabet and Amazon have a vested interest in NOT selling your data.
The interest in not selling your data comes from selling their own products and services.

Facebook and other social media companies have a business model that includes selling your data.
You are the product.

With Apple, Alphabet and Amazon, they have products and services they want to you to buy.
Selling your data would be but a small drop in the bucket of their overall revenue. They can afford, not to sell your data; at least for now.

I thought Alphabet, Amazon and Facebook were in the same ballpark when it comes to user data and privacy?

What do you mean?

They've been hiring people to improve Siri for the last few years but she seems mostly the same.

Is there no such thing as a „competitors clause“ or something in the US? How do all these people get snatched from their current position to start somewhere new doing the same thing
Non-competes? They're illegal in California.

A while ago the big tech companies got in a lot of trouble for secretly agreeing not to poach each other’s employees.

I see people on twitter saying the board should name this guy CEO. Good grief. He hasn’t even started yet. And how do we know he’d even make a good CEO?

It's kind of like many here saying Federighi would be a good CEO because he has engaging stage presence and nice hair. SMH...

Non-compete clauses and the like are invalid/unenforceable in California, as they should be, since they're unconscionable.

So you could like work 5 years at Daimler and then move on to VW and be like „at daimler we were working on this and that by doing these things that way“? Crazy to me

If it's a corporate secret, then that is illegal, otherwise what's the problem? What's crazy is the idea that a company can stop you from earning a living while not paying you a living.

This won’t just help Siri. Searching for something on an Apple device can often be frustrating. E.g. searching for names in your Contacts app yields the most bizarre results, with the literal name/word you typed in often appearing 5th or 7th in the results list. And if you mistype a word while searching in Music or on Apple TV, good luck. It’s super literal.

Been waiting for search on Apple gear to get better for a while, so this is a welcomed hire.

One guy from Google isn't going to fix Siri overnight. Will take forever, but I'd bet he's being paid handsomely. Lots of catching up to do...hope he's up to the task.
