Apple made the iPod because MP3 players sucked

Apple made the iPhone because phones at the time sucked

Apple wants to make VR because why??

Just make your graphic cards good enough to handle this awesome third party hardware that is already light years ahead of you.

Apple made watches because?

It would be interesting to know why Apple has ignored VR for so long.

They haven't been ignoring it. If you look at their patents, they've been researching it for decades. Oculus Rift and Hololens are cool for gamers and tech enthusiasts like myself, but they're a long ways off from being a mass consumer item. Even the target market isn't going to wear those big, bulky headsets all day. Not to mention, the price of entry is still relatively steep.

There's no reason for Apple to rush into this market any more than they needed to rush into the MP3 player, cellphone or tablet markets. They don't need to be first; just much better.

I think we're in for a long quiet period in technology.

You're not wrong.
Apple's achieved having a rather powerful, networked, lightweight & easy-to-use computer
that, miracle of miracles, you can carry around right in your back pocket!
And her name is "iPhone".

Other than making these devices less expensive/more powerful,
as time goes on, what new thing is there to make?
You already have the pocket computer: so now what?

"Apple Watch", you say? Fine: an iPhone on your wrist.
But after a portable, powerful computer, what thing is there beyond that?

Like you say: we've hit the plateau & it's gonna be that way for a long, long while.
The only'somewhat slim hope I have is thinking that Apple's not building
this huge new campus based solely on anticipated future iPhone sales.

I agree. We haven't witnessed anything ground breaking after the iPad. Still waiting for a true game changer from Tim Cook. This is what happens when the management gets old and runs out of ideas. There is no true visionary at the helm. 2015 was such a predictable year and I don't see any huge surprises for 2016; just revisions to the current lineups. Nothing new and exciting.

I wouldn't say the iPad was ground breaking. I would say the iPhone was ground breaking and iPad iterated on that. From a new tech perspective, the Apple Watch, Apple Pencil and the new Apple TV were all more groundbreaking than the original iPad, IMO.

Apple has been very busy the past couple of years introducing a ton of products/innovations so I actually wouldn't mind seeing them slow down in 2016 and focus on refining them and ensuring everything in the Apple ecosystem worked seamlessly.

I think high quality VR will prove to be surprisingly addictive. As the cost comes down, many, many people will become addicted. It may not change things in the way smartphones have, but it will have a big impact.

Another tech milestone coming along the pipeline is self-driving cars. I think technology is entering an even more exciting phase.

Very nice try to downplay a somewhat positive news in a negative sentence towards Apple....

Btw this hardly is unexpected news, since Apple surely is looking for development in UI (that doesn't automatically mean virtual reality).

GET BACK TO MAKING COMPUTERS!
When exactly they stopped?
I'm quite sure I bought a 2015 made MacBook Pro a few months ago.... A very nice notebook

Yeah....about that...I didn't they stopped. They appeared to get "distracted" from emphasizing their basic products.

VR, as much as I've been waiting since the 80s & Jaron Lanier to have it, will be the ruination of many.
You think net & WOW shut-ins are bad now, just wait until VR goes mainstream.

It will mean the immediate birth of a generation that don't know of a time without VR.
And if there lives are messed-up, they're gonna seek refuge in their digital reality:
a refuge that if yanked from, will cause severe emotional damage.
Not unlike Nog in "Deep Space: Nine" not wanting to leave his ideal digital reality.

Add to that the hyperrealistic depiction of military combat.
I disagree with all the Chicken Littles that said violent videogames
play a significant role in mass-school shootings.
However, VR is another story entirely.
I, most unfortunately, can absolutely see some nutzoid getting too overstimulated
playing "Call Of Duty: VR" then going out into the real world and committing some abominable act.

Everybody is five years ahead of apple in VR with huge teams of devs.
Apple just hired on guy.
Brilliant.
First: we don't know if Apple is interested in VR yet.
Second: they hired a very competent chap and bought a couple of related companies.
Third: "everybody " is 5 years ahead and still going nowhere as of today. As usual Apple could come second and bests all in an heartbeat.

Late to the party as per usual recently. Pro tip: VR needs great graphics cards, not 3 year old mediocre ones in your high end line.
My guess is this is car related not something like oculus rift.

I would argue Apple Pencil is as good as anything Apple released under Steve Jobs 2.0. It's entirely possible it would never have seen the day if Steve Jobs were still alive.

Still sitting and waiting until the day the Apple TV is no longer a hobby...

It isn't a hobby now.

A company like Apple doesn't work only for short term... Maybe this is related to future development on UI

You must be new here. Everyone else in this forum seems to think Apple isn't developing anything we don't know about, and therefore isn't innovative anymore.

We have no idea what team Apple have working on VR.

Google are more public about what they're working on. See: Google self driving car. Apple says nothing publicly then introduces a product.

Just like they were late to the party with 64-bit phone chips, fingerprint scanners, mobile payments, etc etc etc. </s>

They are just snapping up talent and companies to keep other companies from getting them.
Sometimes I get the same feeling. But the only way to persuade top dogs is to promise them exciting projects and show a big pile of cash. Without projects the pile cash has to be taller and it would be an expensive hobby to maintain
