ok....I dunno, but is it just me, or is this the 'norm' ?

Apple hired people, not way before like several years ago, but they hire people just before, or while they're working on current projects like the iWatch the only think i can think of here is because, they need "extra" help..

Why Phillips ?

There's allot better out there....

This can either end in a good product, or a bad one...

I based all my stuff now on where Apple hires, as i think this is the key point..

What makes it a device you want to wear?

Going back to what Tim Cook said at All Things D last year, what would make a wrist device something people want to wear?

I would have thought they see the compulsion coming from a number of uses, much like the original iPhone was launched as '3 devices'.

So I'm thinking they'll take the same approach this time:

- An iPhone companion to view and action notifications, control music, use Siri etc.
- An integrated quantified self device, with more sensors than any on the market currently. Sleep monitoring is just a small part of this, but sleep is also a significant factor in peoples general health.
- A payment device. I'm from the UK and NFC is now widely available. It may not be for the US so much, but I think Apple's payment system will use both NFC and BLE to cater for the capabilities of all markets. And NFC really does make sense when it's on your wrist.

If it did those three, well, I think that would have reason enough for people to want to use one, as Tim Cook alluded to.

Just now hiring doesn't bode well for a 2014 release.

Apple took their sweet time with both the iPad and the iPhone and I believe they're taking the same care to only release the iWatch when it's something that will blow everybody away.

I rather see Apple release a mind-blowing new device in 2015 instead of releasing a buggy not that mind-blowing device in 2014.

They cant because they will never release two new categories in the same year.
This year this thing and next year the TV

i mean if this year will not release a new category product or the iphone 6 will be not a huge hit change/mac/ipad aswell, well....
last year they were ok thanks to its mac pro

I saw a apple engineer with a iWatch yesterday, he looked magical! It was in a protective cover with double down on security.

iWatch

Alarm

The watch will monitor the wearer so that it can calculate the best time to wake the person up based on sleep cycles. This will be just one of the things it will do.

Also possible they will be working on 2.0 or they are simply such hot property they don't want anybody else having him.

You don't hire someone simply because you don't want others to have them. I'd put money on us not seeing an iWatch this year.

Of course you do. You also buy companies just to keep the tech out of the hands of the competition.

ok, this is what I'm getting from all this hiring news at Apple for the iWatch…. They are going to introduce a fitness accessory like the Jawbone with a screen. If that what they are doing…. it won't be revolutionary at all… and it will SUCK big time!

Apple hasn't generally done that. They also don't just pay salaries purely to keep someone from the competition. They have a purpose in their hiring.

It actually doesn't tell us anything other than Apple is looking into sleep monitor as a feature. Of course Apple could release a band this year. The inital feature set doesn't depend on advanced sleep monitoring & it's absence in the debut product would not be tarnished w/o it, esp. if the whispers about included heart rate monitoring prove true.

Or maybe an Apple TV this year/2015 and an iWatch in 2016.

I'm amazed people can say things like this with such confidence.

Any half decent tech company can make a product that doesn't suck, and I think Apple is much more than a 'half decent' company.

Also, Google 'Why the iPad will fail' and see how idiotic people look.

Am I the only one who wants to see Jony Ive stand on stage and talk us through a new product? This could be the one!

I didn't said it will fail… I said it will suck, as the Shuffle. it was cool but it sucks big time! that's what I mean. but don't worry if you are looking for trolls I'm not one.

Does Philips have any good products? Can't remember the last time I bought something philips, maybe in the 80s

He probably worked for Respertronics... The area of Phillips that makes medical machines like CPAP for apnea care. A lot of medical devices are managed as outpatient therapies nowadays, with websites to upload your data to and your doctor can signon and see your progress. This could apply to lots of other devices as well.

If still go with my idea from a few weeks ago, Apple needs a "baby apple" to manage products like these that will require extensive certifications or changes to the way Apple works. So Big Apple doesn't have to get mired in the endless paperwork that goes with theses things... They are about USING Apple devices, not MAKING apple devices.

Seems to me that is the same meaning w/ different words. Products that suck don't become viable in the marketplace. They fade away; i.e., fail. I'm not clear what you mean above other than you have no use for the Shuffle (market wise it is not a failed product).

Seep apnea is a serious issue. Wearing a watch that monitors your position and say gives your body a slight signal to make you turn is already a winner.

Beats the wife poking you!

Also, laughing about the posts which already are predicting doom and suck. All that without knowing anything concrete.

Gotta love people:)

This watch is becoming more and more relevant to me lol... Weird

Yeah, i'm kinda getting that same drift so far. I never have worn watches so I was instantly not interested in this "product" as a consumer. However, the whole health thing has really got me rethinking what this "watch" even is.

Depending how far Apple takes it away from being a traditional timepiece the whole "iWatch" may really become a misnomer.

Going to any hospital or primary care provider you name it, they dominate the industry pretty much.

Yes, they do.

Any I never said they would pay someone to keep them away from the competition, only that they hire people to do just that.

They will use these experts for future products.

It does not mean they have no existing medical support tech however.

All this health stuff sounds boring.

Imagine walking down the street and you iWatch senses you are dehydrated, then a clerk in the nearest store is alerted via iBeacon to assist u. Or better yet in a actual medical emergency a EMT can be automatically dispatched to your location.
