Poaching from the competition, huh? I thought Apple was extremely innovative.
Apple has always hired the best. If they don’t have the expertise they need in-house, they hire from outside. The way you stay innovative is to continuously bring in the best of the best.

What would be the alternative? Only hire college grads, and never undertake new projects that need advanced skills you don’t already have? That would be ridiculous.

Good! I hope he can improve the interface; it's god awful horrible.

If Netflix is anything to go by, don't hold much hope here.

Is it really beyond the realms of man for it to show on the app whether I've watched the show before? And further, for when I've watched it elsewhere, for me to quickly mark it as watched without going to the full desktop website? And then have a toggle to display or not display shows already watched.

Very basic ways to massively improve the experience.

Not a single streaming service allows this AFAIK.

It’s what you do when you realize you need to play catch-up. Same deal with all the other Apple success and failures over time. In California, the labor laws allow poaching to happen.

Not sure how people are still confusing “AppleTV”, the settop box w/ “AppleTV+”, the streaming service.

These comments make my head hurt... I assure you, nobody is unplugging their streaming service, because it went to sleep- that’s not possible. The topic here is the streaming service... which is NOT a piece of hardware that can be unplugged.

It’s the same reason why people were confused with XR vs XS iPhones.

Bad branding.

Isn’t this a hypocrisy ?
Not really. The case against Gerard Williams III was predicated on the belief that he was not only planning to create his own company that would compete with Apple while he was actually still working at Apple, but that he was making those plans on company time and using company resources over the course of several years. Whether that's true or not will be for the courts to decide, but it's an order of magnitude more complicated than a simple case of Apple being unhappy that a top employee left to work for a competitor — this guy left to create a competitor.

Everything Junk except For All Mankind and Snoopy in Space. At least I have it for free, for now.

It’s just weird how they throw their own subscription based shows into the mix with all the other regular stuff you have to pay for. Makes it hard to find anything TV+ fast

It's pretty stupid. Needs a dedicated app.

YES YES YES it is driving me INSANE when it shows me something as „continue watching“ when I already watched that season before. Like just give me a god damn „already watched“ button. The only thing you can do is hide the whole show all together which messes up your „taste“ cuz the show will be gone from your suggestions in the future (e. g. if a new season is out) even though you just want it gone from the continue watching list

Bingo. I can’t believe it is not technology possibly, more likely a business decision. Seems so obvious a thing to implement.

What you call poaching most simply call hiring. It’s what you do when you realize you need additional resources with experience and skills outside your workforce’s current expertise.

Apple continuously adds excellent employees, hiring them based in large part based on their skill set. Isn’t that what all companies do?

Try doing that outside of California. I’m not saying they aren’t good employees, but one of the reasons companies in California do this is because they can hire competitors without liability.

California labor laws are good

No, California labor laws are great 🙂 It’s true that non-competes are basically not allowed in California. But it’s not true that other states don’t have their own restrictions. They are typically limited with respect to time limits post-separation, applicability as to field of work and geographic restrictions.

Even in California there are restrictions on use of confidential and proprietary company information (“trade secrets”), but as I understand it actions against former employees on those bases are in general difficult to prove without hard evidence.

The above is based on my familiarity with employment agreements, both as an employee and from the employer side. I’m know there are attorneys here and probably even employment attorneys, so maybe someone will correct, clarify and/or expand on the topic.

Right. Hence why competitive hiring (what some call poaching) occurs frequently with CA companies. I know this because I was “poached” before without legal consequences when I used to live in CA.

If I had lived elsewhere out of state, the non compete clause would have been valid for 3 months or more. The decision to jump to a competitor becomes a little more difficult

Other states would do well to follow in California’s footsteps. The free flow of employees among companies is a factor that leads to a faster pace of innovation.

Unfortunately corporations prevent employee-friendly labor laws from being passed in many state houses.
