Yesss! It’s time for everyone to get pumped for the ALL NEW conversational Siri. Tim sure wasn’t kidding when he said on Thursday that Apple was making great progress. Apple can’t wait to see the incredible things customers are able to do. Apple thinks you’re gonna love it. Stay tuned!

How is Apple to monetise it? And suppose Apple does come to dominate search on their own devices, wouldn't that cost them the billions they get paid from Google each year? So succeeding in search could cost Apple money.

Apple delays Apple Intelligence. MR folks: Apple is doomed.
Apple loses AI people. MR folks: Apple is doomed.
Apple hires folks for AI. MR folks: Apple is doomed.

Meanwhile, record quarter.

Gotta love it here.
can’t blame them for being a bit doomy if it’s the same people who bought the 16 series based on the promise of AI and now reading that they just started hiring…

I certainly give you that those posters who bought a 16 with that expectations are disappointed, but that is not the majority of the doom posters.
And I don't understand where you and others are getting the idea that "Apple is just now starting to hire...", there is nothing to that effect anywhere in the Gurman comment, there is certainly his spin on things but he needs to make money on clicks...

Shouldn't they have did this one year ago!
well last year they started with a brainstorm meeting. And after one year of figuring that apple staff is not able, they now try to get people with the knowledge. Next year they will find out that siri is a dead horse and then the real work can start;)

So this is probably another year or so away (so my 14 Pro lives on!) If it's a paid subscription like ChatGPT, hopefully it’ll tie into Apple One. I get a lot of use out of ChatGPT, but would love to not have to pay the extra $20/month for it if Apple's version is comparable.

Joz saying that "Apple doesn't want to build a chatbot" shows how out of touch Apple leadership is and how they got here. After Steve died, Apple has had no visionaries at the top. Steve Jobs' last acquisition was a chatbot — Siri —and nobody from Tim Cook down to his VPs understood the future as conversational computing as Steve Jobs envisioned on his deathbed.

They're now paying the price and trying to catch up as others like openAI show them the future. Apple has too much money to be in any trouble but if they don't get better at envisioning 20 years ahead, they will be.
I disagree. The world doesn't need yet another chatbot app. The future of AI, including generative models, doesn't lie in chatbots. It's in a truly smart system that understands the user and helps him get things done. Be predictive, proactive, and supportive. Act. I admire Apple for not doing what everybody else does and I'm convinced that in the long run their vision will turn out to be great.

I’m happy with my LLM of choice. Let me use that. … if Apple Intelligence is any indicator of what this new bot will be like…

Maybe its me. but Siri is worthless to most people I know. Doesn't get half the stuff I want, or cannot do it due to limitations. I switched permanently to Grok 4... Apple C-Suite keeps sleeping too long on new cutting edge stuff until the train moved past them.
So how did you switch to Grok 4?…oh that’s right of course on your amazingly powerful, fast, secure and ultra private iPhone.

There’s room for nuanced criticism although the more extreme takes are definitely reactionary.

Apple’s on-device small models are decent, their personalized options coming out will be useful, but I don’t think they have anything baking beyond the earliest stages right now that serve even half of the use cases that e.g. ChatGPT covers as of today.

Once OpenAI launches a browser and captures a ton more market share it will be quite an uphill climb.

Apple isn’t “doomed” but they aren’t keeping pace, not that it would have been an easy way to do that given the inconsistencies inherent in LLMs, especially those from a 6-24 months ago vs. what we have now that are a lot better.

If they do ever release a chatbot which I am also skeptical of I’d be very interested to read whatever research they come up with that guards the model because right now there isn’t anything foolproof that I know of, Anthropic just made a huge update to their system prompt 2 days ago to try and curb some aberrant behavior as one example.

It’s glaringly obvious that they’re still fumbling in the dark with no idea what they’re doing. iOS 27? Seriously? Why even bother splurging on a new iPhone this September? This is an absolute train wreck of embarrassment.
That should have been clear as day with the "new Siri" debacle. They are getting left behind and trying everything they can to "catch up" but their old, not first but better, isn't the case anymore with their terrible software they have been pumping out lately.

I’m excited about the prospect of OpenAI developing an innovative smart device that hopefully eventually will rival the iPhone. I’m sooo eager to move away from my Apple tech and embrace a fresh, AI-driven alternative that could redefine the smartphone experience.
ChatGPT has been “for profit” since 2019 and they still haven’t generated a profit. They are hemorrhaging money as a matter of fact and they have competitors everywhere. Competition that is growing fast so they need to worry about their survival first before developing any hardware. Lol

Please source this. I think it’s conjecture based on their funding, operational loss right now is expected. Do you have evidence to the contrary? I’d be curious to read it if it is objective and not put together by someone with bias against the tools in general.

There are valid criticisms but xAI, OpenAI, Meta, and Google will all be able to pursue the bitter lesson trajectory for quite a while. Most of them will eventually pivot and add another revenue stream from advertisements and it if that follows the path of the general internet most people will gladly take that trade if they can continue paying current prices.

Those of us who care or who have more advanced use cases will be forced to pay a significantly higher price, $200/mo won’t be unusual going forward. Companies like Google are definitely doing those long-term projections and the calculus behind what it will take to stay profitable once things settle a bit (and before world models which, who knows what happens then).

OpenAI has enough mind share to remain extremely valuable for at least a year or two, and if they can’t turn it around they will probably sell and their investors will probably still come out ahead.

Antrhopic is who I’m most worried about, and subjectively in m opinion they have the best product.

It have a suggestion that is completely impractical and only semi-facetious that could solve two problems for Apple.

Apple should buy OpenAI

This would
1. Give them world-leading teams to solve their AI issues
2. Get Jony Ive back so Apple can return to design-centric products.

Now, I'm sure there would be some fallout and executive rank shake ups. It might require getting rid of the current Apple executive team and replacing them with people who are driven to change the world, not just the size of their portfolios.
