Wow. I went to school with Eric and his brother as we grew up in the same town, and just pulled up MacRumors as I do (almost daily) and saw his face quite unexpectedly. Way to go, Eric!

This is the most feasible and probable Star Trek-like idea I've seen in quite a while. Very interested in an ear-bud format, but not a standalone device.

But if anyone was hoping for some breakthrough devices at WWDC, might as well lower your expectations now. If we get anything it won't be much.

WWDC has never been the place to watch for new hardware. Apple's move into the space is going to be incremental, so look for signs of that.

As someone in the medical field, I can tell you this is already a thing.

The only things that really help physicians tell patients they are ok (except extreme cases) are data and tests. Now, instead of having Ms. Hypo Chondriac come in each week for a BP reading, you can have a continuous monitor which will give a MUCH better reading than a single check (see White Coat Syndrome).

Who knows, also, what Apple has planned for this. Having the technology is one thing. What Apple is supremely good at is using technology to give us something new and useful - Ping excluded.

Oh God, could you imagine how awesome it would be if people could use an iOS device and peripherals as a Holter Monitor?

The link in the article says Lehigh:

The OP was referring to Sheldon, not Eric.

I'm not a fan of the show, but I did some quick searching and found this:

The argument that he received his degrees from CalTech on Quora seems pretty valid to me.

In real life Jim Parsons (much older than his character) graduated from the University of Houston.

I believe we will see a big increase in hearing damage from noise exposure and longer lifespans. An app and hardware to fix this could be a big market. Hearing aids are thousands of dollars.

If somehow Apple can use emitted electromagnetic radiation from the phone to make earwax easier to remove then thus could be the killer feature that finally differentiates Apple from Samsung.

People who say you don't want this: wait until you try it. I was never interested in tracking fitness until I got an app that used the M7 to track my steps. Suddenly I love seeing that number go up and it's actually spurred me to start caring about my fitness in general.

If Apple wants young people to buy the Winokur wearable ear monitors, they'll need to hire someone more marketable and come up with a good name. How about iHeartBeats by Dr. Dre?

Maybe Apple is working on a device that enables mind control of your iOS device, along with these health monitoring features?

Like the Muse headband but smaller and with additional sensors?

Forget air gestures, brain controlled devices are the future! :)

Maybe a simplified version in earbud form that would enable you to turn on your iWatch display just by thinking about it? :D

Not that I seriously think that this would be released this year and that this hire is related, but you can bet that a lot of tech companies are silently experimenting with such brainwaves sensors.

Apple Eye Ear

Everyone has been fooled. There is no iWatch. Obviously, Apple has been working on the iEar :D

Awareness is not a bad thing.

True, but it causes a lot of 'OMG, I'm doing to die' type of events. The Internet was the first thing to cause this. All these current and future health devices are adding to it.

I read about a running app that says you run too much per week now. Because too much running is bad for you, increases injury in muscles and joints, etc. People who are working out too much don't live as long as those who maintain a healthy mix of exercise and diet.

Apple earbuds have never been good enough for me to actually use. Sorry, but I value both sound quality and comfort, and until Apple convinces me they can do those things better than Shure, Etymotic, Ultimate Ears, etc., I'm not going to stop using the earbuds I already have.

Interesting but until there is a solid scientific prove for this, I will continue my exercise. Personally I don't take seriously every single rubbish I read on the internet or papers. Digging enough in the internet you may find that smokers or alcoholic persons may have longer healthy lifespan then non-smokers or non alcoholics. Doesn't take genius to know that's not true.
