But there are no retaliatory EU tariffs on American tech right now, so in addition to what exactly?

Who says the EU won't strike back at the USA with tarrifs. This thing is far from over yet.

Unless you have some inside information where you know for 100% certain the EU agrees to everything Trump has said and will sign a new trade deal.

Americans won't be paying the fine, the EU citizens will.

Look what Apple did when the EU demanded that Apple should offer 3-year warranty. Apple increased the prices in the EU due to that.

If the cost of doing business in the EU becomes more expensive, someone is going to pay for it, and it won't be the American citizens. We have seen this before.

Weird. I am in the EU and I don't have a 3 year warranty

Never heard of a 3-year warranty. The EU requires companies to offer 2 year warranty on any product except for food. However, what Apple did was to lure people into buying AppleCare by claiming it gives them the law-enforced 2 years of warranty.

The rules are incredibly opaque and nonsensical. The Meta decision is literally crazy, and I am not a fan of Meta.

While I’m not a fan of Apple’s anti steering provisions, I’d like a bit more detail on why Apple was fined here. If it’s because they don’t let apps say “cheaper if you sign up on our website” then fine. If it’s because they want apps to be able to advertise it’s cheaper in the App Store description or if Apple isn’t allowed to get a commission from a link in the app, then that’s overreach.

And the fact that Apple takes a 30% commission on this “protection” we will just forget about for now 🙂
15% for most developers.

I’m otherwise staying out of this discussion. It will basically be “Apple is Greedy” versus “The EU government is stupid”. There will undoubtedly be little good discussion weighing the pros and cons of what the EU did and what Apple did.

Who says the EU won't strike back at the USA with tarrifs. This thing is far from over yet. They have been threatening the USA with tarrifs so it will most likely happen.
But unlike Trump, the EU takes both EU consumers and companies into consideration when applying tariffs. Additionally, Apple's products aren't even manufactured in the US. So can we just not take those into account right now, as we don't know what will happen, nor do we know how that affects the price of iPhones in the EU. And if we do take all these things into account, can we also take the considerably stronger euro into account as well? Or doesn't that fit the narrative you're going for?

The EU has found a way to add to their coffers. Apple, or any company, does not pay the fines. The customers do through increased prices. Sure people don’t have to buy the product, but they will. Then bitch at Apple for the price being too high. It is past time for one of these companies targeted by the EU to tell the EU to put it where the sun doesn’t shine. Most of the laws are passed by politicians with VCRs still flashing 12:00 as their understanding of technology stopped with a rotary dial phone.

Might be a surprise to you but most EU citizens support the EU's handling of big tech. And Apple's shareholders sure won't be pleased when Apple decides to pull out of the big market that is the EU because some "MR-expert" said so.

I think it goes to the App Developers. In the end they are the ones who suffered under Apple’s regime and made 30% less profits.

Most Developers wouldn’t have jobs if it weren’t for Apple. If they can’t be bothered to pay 15% for using another company’s intellectual property to make a living they should find a new line of work.

I agree 15% would be fair. but most money comes from devs paying 30% though. that’s just too much.

and seems like they’re finally getting compensated for it.

e.g. 500 app dev companies in the EU all get 1M€. it’s not a lot but better than nothing.

Meta's response basically boils down to "we can't provide a good service if we aren't allowed to violate our user's privacy at every turn of the way".

Maybe your services then has no right to exist.

Is this another one of those imaginary slights the EU pulled on Apple? Because there is no 3 year warranty requirement in the EU. There is only a 2 year warranty that applies to pretty much every electronic and it has existed for decades, long before the iPhone was introduced.
Because the user can't know who controls those payment methods. There are a lot of scammers on the internet just waiting to make an app that basically lures people into their payment details stealing apps.
As opposed to Apple's own App Store which is flooded with pointless apps that intentionally push users into "free" trials so that they can leach off of them the weeks after that with 7 dollar a week subscriptions.

Come on now, be real. Windows and macOS users have been just fine, Android users as well. Apple's users don't have to go outside the store if they don't want, it's fully optional. Why do Apple fans always assume Apple users are complete and utter idiots?

please provide evidence of any corruption.
Why was Ireland entitled to money a non-resident company made outside of Ireland? Ireland doesn’t think they were. The EU’s second highest court didn’t think they were. Most legal observers didn’t think they were, and Apple had already paid taxes on that money to the US.

The case should have never been brought. It was straight up theft and the EU illegally changing member countries’ tax law after the fact. But Vestager wanted to hurt Apple so she corruptly went after it and the EUCJ got distracted by Euro signs.

Ok, but is due to a different app? Or they are scam for any other reason?

They scam for any reason that is available to them. This just adds another option, one that is used by a lot more people than just a random website. The App Store needs moderation, but the EU somehow makes it impossible (DMA) and requires it at the same time (DSA).
