If there are long lines to get in, or something technically goes wrong, we can tell them they are "holding" their press conference wrong. ;)

I think Steve Jobs we'll be using one of these Friday on the press.

Anyone want to bet on it being before the market closes at about 1 pm PST? Friday afternoon press conferences are always bad news.

What is with the bumpers? Don't you just need to put a thin coat of transparent lacquer around the edge of the phone.

Now that would only cost a cent or two per phone.

That still puts a Band-Aid on a design flaw. For something that's considered the most advance piece of technology. You hold it wrong, it won't work. It's like saying:

"...Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

Hmm? "Apple Holding iPhone 4 Press Conference on Friday" Are they gonna hold it wrong? :p

While this is a big stupid design error (and one that they obviously knew existed before it came out), the fact remains that the average iPhone user doesn't use their phone for anything so probably doesn't even recognize the issue. And by average I don't consider anyone here average. AT&T said that 94% of iPhone users on their network are less than 200MB a month. If you can stay under 200MB it means you don't do a damn thing on your phone. Wi-Fi is not yet available in enough public areas to be on Wi-Fi 24/7 so if you DO find yourself on Wi-Fi that much it means you're at home or Starbucks and you're never using your phone when you're outside.
.

I am a nerd and use my iPhone heavily outside. Never went above 250MB a month. Since 2007.

See, I just proved that all that wall of text you wrote is BS.

The antenna issue is clearly a manufacturing defect and not a design defect.

1) Not all iPhone 4 suffer from the antenna issue.
2) When exchanged for a different iPhone 4 the issue vanishes in many cases
3) No design changes have been made between phones that work and phones that do not work.

My guess would be that phones suffering from this issue were missing some sealant over the antenna.

I have thought a lot about this. I think they will introduce a "clip" of plastic/rubber that will not allow the user to bridge the antennae. It will just clip on the left bottom corner of the phone. It could cost them as little as 25 cents per "fix" and not require a recall. I don't think they should give away bumpers for free. I don't think they should hassle users either. They could give away this simple thing at any Apple store, and ship them for free to all current users. Although, I bet those bumpers cost less than 50 cents to make each one anyways if the packaging is taken out of the picture.

A complete redo isn't feasible. Apple isn't going to make everyone send them in or incur those costs. What is really wrong about this is SJ's sending people emails telling them to hold the phone differently. Also ridiculous telling us it's software and reception was worse than advertised.

If Apple wasn't so damned secretive, it would have figured this out before the PR nightmare. The worst part is the whole thing was revealed two months in advance anyways.

Hmm...

Will they be Holding the press conference with their left hand grasped tightly? :D

( EDIT: here I was thinking I was all clever until I saw that everyone and their dog posted the same joke )

I'll try something else next time.

There is no way SJ is doing a hardware recall on this thing!

There really isnt anything wrong with the iPhone 4, the reception is better then my 3GS, the antenna faux is just a minor thing. I wonder how many people out there really make a phone call with the so called Death Grip? The only time i actually hold the phone with the DEATH GRIP is when i hold the phone with my left hand and type with it with my right, but thats what a BUMPER is for! LOL Apple already has a lost cost fix.... FREE BUMPERS!!! i think they will probably announce the new software fix to be released, maybe that same day and or free bumpers. I bought a bumper and the phone works great!! Best Smartphone to date!

i am glad Apple is having this news conference, cuz now i can refund my old bumper and get a new one for nothing! lol

If they don't make the bumpers free, they should at least lower the price to like $4.99. $29.99 for an enlarged rubber band is overkill.

May it be the public flogging that Apple deserves.

The iEdsel

Nah, that was the Newton.

The Edsel wasn't a bad car. Just not the right car for the market.

That said. I've got an iPhone 4. I make calls on it. Routinely. It works well. I also have a signal drop issue. I checked. It just... isn't a big deal.
