It's also impressive how much continuity there is in the season and how on rewatches you pick up on small stuff in minor scenes that pay off in terms of stuff down the pipe, and yet this never comes at the expense of the quality of the discrete episode. They make planning a season of television out to be easy, and makes you wonder what those chuckleheads who can barely script two episodes ahead of the action are doing.

The shorter season probably helps. It isn't the traditional UK/Ireland "6 episodes" (Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, The IT Crowd, The Office, Extras, Peep Show, early Red Dwarf) but it is still only half the length of a traditional show.

I wonder how long they were actually working on this show before it was made... I hope they can keep up the storytelling/quality in Season 2.

Why? Tell us.

Apple knows that they are in their infancy of a big industry that's ripe for disruption.

Very much this. There's about 75 million cable/sat subscribers in the U.S that pay on average something in the 70$ average range for it per month. That is down from approximately 95 million just a handful of years ago. What this amounts to is A LOT of TV content revenue up for grabs. See Netflix subscription number for this incredible potential.
The potential for growth and that very important recurring revenue stream in content streaming is huge. A potential of a 1/2 a billion to a billion per month is attainable. There is no such thing as 'making too big a deal out of this' for revenue potential like that.

Diversifying revenue is primary to most big companies. It wasn't long ago Apple used to be an iPhone company that sold some PCs and Tablets. iPhone revenue now dips in the 50s percentile and there's a real possibility in the near future iPhone revenue will be less than 50%. It's hard to understate how important this is and how things like content streaming will help make that happen.

IMO, nothing to get hyped on. Instead of over-hyping one show, they should try working on more shows that will make people feel like the subscription is worth it.

I think Apple is making too much of a big deal on it's TV+ shows.

Maybe some, but Ted Lasso has the most Emmy Nominations for a first year comedy at 20, the last time a show came close was over a decade ago. I sort of think that is a "big deal" for a tech company who is making TV content.

overrated

people hyped it too much to me. watched several episodes and it was at best "OK".

I hate when people do that!! But....the fact that it has so many Emmy nominations would indicate that it is more than just your friend circle that thinks its good. In fact during the season 1 release window Apple saw a 600% global increase in sign ups and set global engagement and and completion records. Again, I get it when people ruin a show and I am sorry. Maybe give it another try in a year or two and you will like it :p

A two minute web search would reveal that AppleTV+ has A LOT of projects in the pipeline.
Most are not for me and I'll be unlikely to subscribe to ATV+(If I get AppleOne I'd take the freebie) -- but the bigger point is the two minute web search that would inform on the issue of "more shows".

As a counterpoint, how much of its success is Apple's doing?

Who would get the credit of success for Apple's decision to create AppleTV+ that then airs a show on AppleTV+ that is successful?
I'll take a stab in the dark and say Apple.

I watched part of the Pilot and decided it really wasn't my cup of tea. Decided to give it another chance recently, and I'm glad I did. Looking forward to season 2.
Same. First episode lost my interest 15 minutes in. Binged the entire season last month on a long flight because I’d literally watched everything else and I was hooked.
One more argument in favor of the “drop all episodes at once instead of once a week” box.

"When asked about how Ted Lasso went from being just a commercial on NBC to a full series, Sudeikis said that almost all of what we saw on screen was actually already created back in 2015."

Its critical success owes very little to Apple - it would have looked, essentially, the same on any network. Of course, Apple were the ones who ran with it and it owes its existence to them but I'm not sure they had much involvement in its success (in terms of quality, which is what awards are given out for, right?)

You'd need 52 shows (or movies) a year to do that successfully though, no?

You’re aware how many different streaming networks there are, yeah?

The "you" being any one of those streaming networks, rather than the end-user.

Nobody's going to subscribe at $5 a month for one season of a show on the last Friday, no matter how good it is... because the next one might not be their cup of tea.

There'd need to be a big back catalogue, or shows being dropped every week, to actually make it work in practice. Until Apple gets closer to Netflix in both regards, they've no option really but to drip feed.

That is trying to dissect the entire movie industry model, gear by gear. One relies on the other. One exists with the other. You go down that rabbit hole and you get to the chicken/egg model real quick :p

Not sure, but since Apple was a company who has always supported the creative fields, and now they are supporting/producing creative content at this level, it stands to reason that ANY contribution they have to the success of the TV show is probably worth celebrating in their book.

Also, it's good press for the show.

Just cancelled my free trial a couple of weeks before it ends. Morning Show was all right, Defending Jacob OK, The Mosquito Coast watchable... I tried almost everything else they have, but I quit after a couple of episodes at most.

The Shrink Next Door looks very interesting though.
