It's only there because they haven't got a shiny new iPhone to shove down our throats.

"Tributes" like this should happen on set occasions. 10 years, 25 years, 50 years etc. Not at random

It's very sad to hear that someone or something forced you to deal with an iPhone. How very pathetic.

Are you going to set the times for the tributes? You're a very powerful person.

I don't pretend to not be a grumpy curmudgeon, but man are there ever some truly miserable personalities on here.

I suppose that's the ultimate purpose of Internet comments sections. A billboard for espousing behavior too ugly to get away with in person.

Sheep!

I love the knee jerk puppy dog eyed admiration that everyone has for this man because the media feeds their AP propaganda down the throats of Joe Public.
I love that because of King, we gained more understanding of racial equality as everyone should be able to live and work as equals side by side. But to praise this man under the guise that he was a hero is sad.
Mike King Jr. son of Daddy King was a fraud and a plagiarist.
His dad changed his name and his sons name without legitimate legal means.
He stole most of everything he ever said to earn him his degree including his "I have a dream" speech.
He preached non violence, but carried a gun.
He was heavily affiliated with the communist party.
Misappropriated funds to afford himself liquor and prostitutes.
The FBI followed him concerning his illegal activities and his communist buddies and affiliations and his FBI records were sealed until 1927.
This is not pure speculation or opinion, but facts that are actually well documented.
It just is terrible that we no longer have Washington or Lincoln Day, but are now covered under the generic "Presidents Day", but we give this man a special designation and a holiday.
Hopefully the admin will be fair and not take down this post as it is purely factual and just leveling the playing field.
I love Apple and everything they stand for, but their home page should feature products and not politically correct praise.

This is basically what I think about it: Last Week Tonight - Corporations on Twitter.

Apple should stop doing this. This man campaigned for equal rights, Apple make computers. There is zero overlap. It's embarrassing.

It is certainly not a publicity or marketing opportunity. Seriously, did Apple really lose all of their class the day Steve passed?

What are you talking about ? Steve was the one who established this. Apple has always being doing this for many people that left their mark and affected other people's life in a positive way.

Don't get me wrong, here, I do also disagree with many decisions Apple has taken concerning their computers lately. But that's another story.

Apple unveiled a new iPod on October 12th 2005 and posted a Rosa Parks on their homepage 12 days later.

Sure it does.

Hell, Tim Cook himself is part of a minority facing its own issues even today. Civil Rights involve every man, woman and child in this country, and paying tribute to a man who gave his life for those rights are part of what America should be about.

Yeah I would imagine Tim Cook can at least identify with being treated differently as part of a minority group.

Geez lets just remember that mlk did great things and should be respected. It's not that big of a deal that a company wants to recognize that.

Gandhi, Dr. King and Gold Meir were, to me, the greatest persons in 20th Century, but this ''politically correct'' mania in order to capture consumers just bores me...

Why would they need to overlap when they like to appreciate what King did? Sounds like a very constructed argument of yours.
Anyway, to me it is the other way round: Since the (imo overrated) S. Jobs passed away, Apple really started to grow - and I don´t mean their record breaking profits.

You actually think someone is going to buy an Apple product because they put a picture of Martin Luther King on their website?

Btw, apple.com is back to normal now so everyone can chill out.

So don't go to apple.com. They felt like it was appropriate to honor a man of peace. Why get all worked up about it. If you don't like it, then avoid apple.com (though its been taken down now).

Apple tripping over itself. I want to see a special Apple page to commemorate Mother Teresa.

Why? Mother Theresa was a horrible person. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that she was a saint.

----------

So have many companies, in ways far more profound than Apple could ever dream to.

Take pharmaceutical companies, for example. They invent drugs which may actually save human lives. Is it now tasteful if they promote their company using the image and reputation of civil rights activists?

How about oil companies? They're no more destructive to the planet than Apple are (I mean it - mining for raw materials is very damaging!). On the other hand, they provide us with far more fundamental necessities such as heating, lighting, transportation so we can import food, etc. They have arguably done much, much more for the human race than ten Apples.

So I expect you all to be just as accepting when BP make a road-trip ad featuring Gandhi and Jesus, or when Bayer show MLK taking an Aspirin after a major speech.

Who says they wouldn't be accepting? You're posing a straw man argument.

I'm not the original poster, but I would welcome a pharma company or an oil company paying tribute to a civil rights leader or some other champion of the human race.

It's not in order to capture consumers. It's done in order to acknowledge and honor Dr. Martin Luther King.

I don't care much about this, or their red product range, aimed to give them a good image, rather than helping society, as their planned obsolenced products and sweatshops in asia probe.

Dear apple, you better improve your mac line for real, cause I won't buy any ipod in the future, I have the best phone ever, nexus 5, and your new macs suck big time.

Up to you apple.

Yeah, I'm pretty baffled by the posters who say that Apple shouldn't have recognized King.

Yeah me too. I'm also a minority so I appreciate the things mlk did and the persecution he endured to keep fighting, which cost him his life also.

What's sad is that it's not like this time period was some ancient time. Like around 50 years ago.

People who are not complaining about this are people who don't have an issue with Mr. King. Tables would be turned if Apple honored someone like Ronald Reagan or George Bush. That would be a laugh.

Oh, and BTW, I could care less about MLK day this year. It landed on the same day as my 30th wedding anniversary. Guess which won? Not racist, just fact. Sorry Mr. King. You lose.

We honor both of those gents on Presidents Day. I wouldn't have an issue with a pic and snippet of either of those two guys speeches "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" would be fine. Perhaps "We've seen the unfurling of flags, the lighting of candles, the giving of blood, the saying of prayers in English, Hebrew and Arabic." Don't mix good rhetoric and good ideas with politics.

I didn't know someone had to lose

Wow. Nice job. Everything you posted is true. Kudos.

Hopefully Apple won't devote any award or special brew ha ha towards the late Nelson Mandela. ;)
