It wasn't or I'd have known
Look here:
There was a fairly large debacle around dropping Rosetta and one of the most prominent examples of software that would no longer work was Quicken. Hell, I would not even be aware of Quicken's existence, were it not from it being plastered over MacRumors et. al.
If you as a end-user do not take the time to double check if a piece of legacy software from about 5 years ago will still work on Lion, the surprise is entirely on you. If we all knew, you could have too.
Next time, do your homework properly.

Quicken how could you use a palaeolithic version of your software requiring Rosetta?? There is a reason that apple got rid of power-pc's, rosetta;s and moved on laughing all the way to the bank, while making its enlarged base of customers happy.

I understand that it sucks for people that depend on quicken, but it is not apple's fault... Quicken should have sorted this out years ago, no matter how large a task.

I'm brand new to Mac (well, almost). I actually had been considering getting Quicken, but of course now I won't. So, what other "good" financial applications (not cloud-based) are out there for Mac?

Quicken Essentials works

It may not be the PC equivalent but it does basic checking. I just opened mine on Lion and it seems to work fine.

That said there may be better programs for finances. I like Moneywell for its simplicity, thought iBank looked terrible.

To disable Quicken (or for that matter any Rosetta propelled app) without providing some warning before ya "upgrade" to Lion??!! I mean are ya kidding??!! Are ya just trying to piss people off?? I've spent the past two days trying to create a work around thus "loss of productivity" and have spent $ on a variety of upgrades. Has anyone tried to convert Quicken mac files into Window's files so you could potentially run it on Parallels using XP? The documentation to do this is pathetic. So, I for one am stuck with either going back to SL or using another computer with SL on it for doing Quicken work. F'n stupid! Just F'n stupid.

Cool story bro, ignored all those threads and Youtube videos pretty good there, recommend you run for government sometime.

Quicken Essentials OK (sort of)

My understanding is that Quicken Essentials for Mac WILL run on Lion.

This is not really great news, however. I am in the process of switching over to QE and, to be honest, I think it is the worst piece of coding I have ever seen. ............
QE will convert your file from previous versions to it's own format. I moved up from Q2005 and it transferred everything over without hiccup.

Most of the above comments must be relevant to QuickBooks.

My Quicken Essentials seems to work but you are right in your gripes about the app. The most annoying feature is the remembered payee list. It grows infinitely as you can't delete payee names (as you could in Q2005) without deleting the transaction. If like me you download most of your transactions you find that merchant transactions differ slightly resulting in more payees. Unlike you I did not have an easy time converting as a lot of transactions were duplicated and I had to delete duplicates one by one. It really would be nice if Intuit got better with Mac coding as you say. It seems the base should be large enough especially as Intuit seems to be evolving into a consumer company with things like credit cards and even home mortgages. I am not an iPhone user but it seems to me the market for a paid app on IOS would be huge.

added: I also understand that if you convert from Windows Quicken to Quicken Essentials you can't convert back to iBank which is more cross compatible with the Windows versions.

I'm not a hardcore user but I think ibank is the way to go unless you move to quicken for PC. I wasn't all that impressed with quicken 2007. I don't import into turbo tax either.

I would add a massive +1 for iBank. Been using it for a year now and wouldn't use anything else, tracks all my accounts, credit cards, savings and investments. Even has an iPhone app for logging cash purchases (takes a bit of effort to maintain, but allows a really accurate view of expenditure).

Tried all the others: MoneyWell, Money, Squirrel, etc. And none get close. (The new Money4 is a good step in the right direction, but apparently quite buggy as only a beta - also I'm pretty far down the iBank rabbit hole, so a switch would be hard). Highest rated in the finance section of the Mac App Store, read the reviews, wont be disappointed.

Apparently pretty easily imports Quicken files too...

Richard.

Somewhere in a secret room in Cupertino CA a group of software engineers plotted their revenge against intuit's application Quicken. They thought to themselves, "Mauh ha ha ha we will make it so Quicken doesn't run on the Lion when it comes out, and this will create panic in the world. Then one day all will come to us asking how do we make it work on our Mac's, they'll grovel at our feet and beg us saying please please-I-I need it - I just cant live without it!!!!!"

Thus far the evil plan is succeeding and people are posting about this malicious evil act here on this blog. We must put an end to this chaos before it consumes the world!!!!!!

Can't say I didn't warn you, the removal of the CD/DVD drive was phase one of their evil plan. The App store was Phase two.

Making me laugh man ... phase 3 is the matrix right?

I think one of the first things that you should do before any upgrade is check the compatibility of app, especially if they are work-critical.

You didn't do this.

Apple pulled support for legacy apps, cheers on them - Microsoft supports everything and hasn't got the balls to move on, and look where that got them.

You mean about 90% market share... Yeah, they are really upset about that one....

Literally could not have put it better myself, no-one upgrades an entire OS without checking compatibility with their "mission critical" apps.
Unless they are some sort of masochist?
