I have multiple Apple IDs and no problems with them.
Two of them use ME.com and iCLOUD.com and the last password update for both of them was in 2019. My other Apple IDs have had their passwords last updated from 2018 to 2022.

All my iOS devices (iPhone, iPad Pro and iPad Mini) run the current OS version. My 3 Macs run Ventura (13.6.6, just have not gotten around to updating them to Sonoma yet).

My oldest Apple ID existed before Apple required them to be an email address. I had to change it to an email address when I purchased my first iPhone. It has almost all of my iOS App purchases and iTunes music & movies purchases. My oldest song purchases are from April 2004, 20 years ago.

My spouse also has no problems with her Apple ID using iPhone, iPad mini and a Mac.

That's helpful to all of us, thank you.

Till Apple doesn't explain it
A quick summary of what isn't the cause so far, after reading several articles and messages :

No email ending in .me or .Mac because other emails were involved

No Stolen Device Protection, many people didn't even had it ON, but I turned mine OFF because if you are not at home it's a longer nightmare from what someone wrote

No old iCloud password , I reset mine VOLUNTARILY in January.

It's happening everywhere, US, Canada, UK, Sweden and Europe in general
I’m wondering if it’s related to the rumour of Apple ID changing to Apple Account.
Could be a migration issue somewhere in preparation for the change and it’s being done in batches which is why not everyone was affected.

We are approaching the 24-hour mark and it's still radio silence from Apple. We all pay the "Apple Tax" to avoid crap like this.

We deserve to know what happened. Do better, Apple. 😡

BTW, everything is still good after my password reset about 17 hours ago.
I'm not sure it's that simple.

If we assume a worst-case scenario, a breach that's not been fixed, then announcing it publicly could lead to more attacks or similar.

I'm not saying that's the case because it doesn't appear that any users are having their data leaked or accounts abused or anything similar.

It's worrying and annoying. But I haven't read of anyone facing more troubles than being locked out, or having to reset one or several many passwords.

What do you mean by app specific passwords? I just had to reset my Apple one, so I’m confused with this terminology? Why would it affect other apps?
In my case, I use a third-party calendar app (Fantastical) that needs access to my iCloud calendars. You can generate an app-specific password on the iCloud website (this ought to be built directly into macOS/iOS/iPadOS but isn’t) so that you aren’t exposing your actual password to that app, and if for some reason that app becomes compromised, you can just revoke its access.

I kept getting prompted to sign in when I started the computer so I went to Apple Music to sign in there because Apple is always trying to trick me into signing into iCloud.
I was able to sign in without an issue, but Apple really needs to stop this garbage.
I don't want to use iCloud, I don't want two factor authentication and it's my damn business if I don't want them.

My Apple ID is one of the old MobileMe ("@me.com") addresses. Wondering if it is something to do with this as my partner and other family members had no issue, but had iCloud accounts created much later on.

Can anyone else confirm if their affected Apple ID is a @me.com address?
I have a mobileme account. Happened to me. Rest of the family is iCloud, they were unaffected.

Absolutely happened to me on my .Mac account around 10pm Eastern US time. Got pinged to log into iCloud on the AppleTV I was watching and iPhone I was using. The absolutely correct password didn't work until it told me to reset. I tried using my Recovery Contact, but both her iPhone and Mac just gave some error without text when she tried to generate the code.

I have Stolen Device Protection on, and for some reason it thinks I am away from a family place despite being at my vacation home and wifi for the past two months... Once I set an alarm to wake me back up after 11pm I was prompted to make a new password and no matter what I tried it told me my password was lame and I ended up making a 42 fracking character mixed case with symbols passphrase. This got rid of the message on my phone and AppleTV, but my AWU2 still kept balking. Both typing in the new PW and pasting it in via my phone.

Got the rest of my devices logged back in with the new password this morning but no dice on the AW. I reached out to Apple Support which did not mention this whole password debacle as a known issue. They had me reboot my phone (I had already force rebooted my AW) and weirdly that fixed it and all my devices got prompted that a new device was added to my account.

Ws SUPER disconcerting to get this last night as I was sure somehow I was being brute forced somewhere. Really disappointed not to get message/email from Apple on the problem or something canned for the Support person to parrot.

Now I need to figure out:
1. Why did the Recovery Contact option fail?
2. Why isn't the place I have been every day for 2 months not familiar enough to skip the 1 hour device protection?

Yeah, hit me the main Family Account holder with an ancient .Mac/.me account, and one other .me family sub account. He is of course on vacation in Vegas and not inclined to waste time on his vacation to mess with this, so his iMessages and other iCloud services are all futzed up.

There are widespread reports of Apple users being locked out of their Apple ID overnight for no apparent reason, requiring a password reset before they can log in again.

apple-id-account.jpg

Users say the sudden inexplicable Apple ID sign-out is occurring across multiple devices. When they attempt to sign in again they are locked out of their account and asked to reset their password in order to regain access.

This has led to additional Apple ID issues for users with Stolen Device Protection enabled who are away from a trusted location, as well as any app-specific passwords previously set up in iCloud also being reset.

As noted by 9to5Mac, user reports about the problem began appearing on social media at around 8 p.m. Eastern Time and became increasingly prevalent into the early hours of the morning.

MacRumors staff members have also been affected by the service outage, which does not appear to have been picked up by Apple's own System Status webpage.

This morning Apple requested a password reset via email. I succeeded after numerous tries via my established security questions. No other method worked. Lucky I remembered them!

Is Facetime affected? It keeps asking me to activate it with my password but then the message goes away before I put the password in. But Facetime still not working.

I am so happy that it just wasn’t me, I have been so worried someone hacked me. 🤣

Me too. I checked iCloud account status and it showed no issues. I was quite worried because I felt my account may have become compromised. Had to reset my phone, watch, computer, laptop and Apple TV. Had to issue new one-time passwords for Outlook on my computer and laptop - those didn’t work right away causing more grief. Many iCloud items didn’t sync right away. Just a major pain in the butt all around.

So far no. Shall see.
