It’s obvious from the comments in this post that users have experienced Apple account sign-in problems. However, these reports are a minuscule fraction of the Apple device / services user base .. and does not support reflexive conclusions of a widespread outage that warrants a public statement or status down indication on the Apple Systems status page — simply because some users are experiencing problems.

In other words, billion user scale systems (or any rationally designed and managed system for that matter) are not designed for perfect performance or 100% availability as that is impractical and economically infeasible.

@heretiq What does DownDetector actually detect? It sounds like it detects when the service was not operating. How does it know if a service is fully operative but telling people to reset their passwords?

I agree the problem as a percentage of users world wide will be nothing like as bad as this (and the other) threads imply, but it was ever thus. People post to report problems not lack of problems.

Whatever the true small percentage of actually affected people is I would expect it to be the same worldwide as for MR readers. There is no reason why it should be any less outside MR. It is not like some other "problems" on MR where small numbers of people on MR complain bitterly about problems that don't affect or are not noticeable by the billions (eg the inadequacy of 256GB RAM, bent iPads come to mind).

Happened to me last night when I opened an app and was like, what happened! Friend goes to me, oh there was a hack going on similar to this be careful.

Anyways, I reset my password and patiently had to wait an hour due to the SDP thing I enabled. Very annoying as I have it set to always, my issue. So far no problems since. I figured I’d reset my recovery code in case and it wouldn’t let me at the time. I guess I’m good if it’s widespread.
 
That's a knee jerk reaction to the simple observation, "At this point Apple is getting a reputation for poor reliability across its services. People will start looking at alternatives."

I'm certainly looking at alternatives to two minis, one in the stereo cabinet, and one as my server. They both go off support this fall as Monterey is the end of the line for them. They will both run Linux very nicely.

The Apple alternative is either to get a used M1 mini (the used 2018's are selling for more than the M1) or use Open Core to upgrade the OS despite Apple. Sonoma does not run well on a 2014 mini, but Ventura does.

So, my alternatives are; run Monetery unsupported and firewall off the internet (viable for the server, less so for the stereo cabinet, run Open Core with Ventura to gain another year for used Mini prices to drop, or switch to Linux.

Is Apple's ecosystem really worth very much? I have most of it turned off anyway, iCloud made a huge mess when I tried to use that. Is Apple offering anything I really need? I like the iPad, and the MacBook Air. Sidecar could be very useful, but it doesn't actually work unless I sign both machines in. They are connected by a cable, why would I need to sign in to anything? Apple's becoming too much like Microsoft; route all your data through our servers so we can sniff it.

The point is Apple hardware is still very nice, but their ecosystem is not all that enticing. And on the hardware front, the Beelink GTR7 Pro is an impressive package on the small desktop front, and Linux ultralight laptops are starting to show up. My desktop is already Linux because Apple was too stingy with USB ports until the Studio, and that is over priced for my needs.



There are plenty of alternatives. Even more so since I don't have an iPhone (nor Android.)
My reaction is to the reflective and unsupported cynicism that was expressed in the post I responded to — which was the opposite of the rational thoughts and conclusion you expressed. Given your circumstances, I would conclude the same .. although your reasoning seems to be based on device support and not system reliability or security which was the basis of the fact-bare comment that I was responding to.

@Mike Boreham, we are largely in agreement. The issues reported in this thread are real and they are significant. I referenced Down Detector as an additional, Apple-independent service status source. I don’t know their internal algorithm, but the issue entry form asks whether login or other aspects of the service “isn’t working” and they do indicate down conditions — which are often very accurate based on my own personal experience. My post was a response to the claim that Apple is hiding a major outage and that the proof of that is because there are all these reports on MR and there is no issue identified on the Apple status page — which is a pretty naive and cynical perspective.
 
This happened to me yesterday evening exactly as described. Had to reset my password, reboot all my devices, re-generate all my app-specific passwords. It was super annoying. Luckily I wasn’t traveling so I had access to all my iCloud devices.
What do you mean by app specific passwords? I just had to reset my Apple one, so I’m confused with this terminology? Why would it affect other apps?
 
Affected, sort of:

Got signed out of iMessage and FaceTime. But seemingly not signed out of my Apple ID.

Nothing worked for hours. But then it seemingly fixed itself.

I realized that I haven't changed main Apple ID password for almost 8 years.

It's changed now.

I have an old @me.com email that's still associated with my account (will try to remove it).
 
The current problem is not limited to @me and @Mac addresses.

You may be right but I have not seen any reports by other types of Apple ID, so can you confirm that you have. Is it iCloud.com IDs or other domains?

One possibly confusing factor is that .mac and .me IDs are older and can use .iCloud as an interchangeable alternative to .iCloud. Presumably some people with old IDs prefer to use iCloud.com, so may report that their iCloud.com ID is affected. Newer iCloud addresses can only use iCloud.com and so far I have not noticed any reports that these are affected. There isn't enough data around to say it is definitely only .mac and .me but there seems to be a strong indication of it.

My Apple ID is one of the old MobileMe ("@me.com") addresses. Wondering if it is something to do with this as my partner and other family members had no issue, but had iCloud accounts created much later on.

Can anyone else confirm if their affected Apple ID is a @me.com address?

Not happening for my account, which I've had for 20 years through .Mac, MobileMe and iCloud.

I can use @mac(.)com, @me(.)com, and @icloud(.)com equally. I use this capability as a strategy across service providers.
 
I wasn't affected this time but many years ago a similar thing happened but apple went much further. They disabled the account altogether not even allowing a password reset. So the only way to regain full functionality was to set up a new account for all the devices.

Even stranger is although the old account is technically disabled, it still allows me to log in on the old account for only one thing - and that is to make purchases from apple.

So on the old disabled account it still allows me to purchase things from apple, but otherwise doesn't allow anything else.

Seems incredible and impossible - but it also seems that if apple can make money on disabled accounts, anything is possible!

Yes I did. I rang them and they said the only way to resolve it was to set up a new account.

Luckily I rarely purchase apps on app store, but all previously purchased apps had to be repurchased - with no compensation from apple. It think although it only cost me a small amount of money, legally apple were treading on thin ice.

I even asked them if I would be compensated and they said I would not - and told them this is probably illegal.

The legal case would be that apple's actions had caused financial loss, even though it was only a small amount of money.

Anyway instead of suing apple for a small amount of money, I got the money back by making a term deposit with a bank.

But imagine if I had spent thousands on apps. Then I would have taken them to court. That amount would have been much harder to get back with term deposits.
 
We are approaching the 24-hour mark and it's still radio silence from Apple. We all pay the "Apple Tax" to avoid crap like this.

We deserve to know what happened. Do better, Apple. 😡

BTW, everything is still good after my password reset about 17 hours ago.
 
Would also be nice if they finally axed the ridiculous AppleID modal… ugh! :mad:

Apple wants me to use a secure password? Sure, it’s a 30 character randomly generated password saved in my password manager. And they expect me to type that into the modal from memory? No? Yet, there is no password manager integration and I can’t switch to another app since the modal blocks any other operation until I cancel the modal. Only then can I switch to the password manager, copy the password and go prompt the AppleID modal again to finally paste it in.

Who came up with that UX nonsense? :rolleyes:
Also it doesn’t support passkeys which Apple has been pushing on us. I don’t trust anything from Apple that utilizes its cloud and only utilize the trivial stuff like bookmarks which only partially works.

A quick summary of what isn't the cause so far, after reading several articles and messages :

No email ending in .me or .Mac because other emails were involved

No Stolen Device Protection, many people didn't even had it ON, but I turned mine OFF because if you are not at home it's a longer nightmare from what someone wrote

No old iCloud password , I reset mine VOLUNTARILY in January.



It's happening everywhere, US, Canada, UK, Sweden and Europe in general

So glad to see this, cuz I was hella confused/worried last night.

When the issue is being reported by major outlets like Forbes, 9to5Mac, AppleInsider, The Verge, and Mashable for example, Apple owes us an explanation regardless of the number of users impacted.
 
It started happening to me last night, went through all the hoops to try to unlock account, reset password, all ending in “error” or “server error”. So cannot log in, cannot unlock, cannot change password, started support chat with apple but no help. Started phone support with next level tech support, no solution could be reached, was told to wait 24 hours.

I have so much data for around 20 years with apple from the .Mac days. This is so disappointing. At this point just hoping/praying for a “magic” solution.
