I am having the same problem. It started a couple of months ago, but only very intermittently but now it seems to come up two or three times a week. It’s a real pain. I hope it’s fixed soon.

Have you ever asked Apple support what's causing your issues? I probably wouldn't bother contacting support for a one off unexplained password reset prompt, but if it had happened multiple times over several weeks I'd be looking for some support.

Also, Music app had an error yesterday when trying to change devices linked to be authorized. With WebObjects in the lines of error. They are still running WebObjects as the backbone! Cool. But it must be a major server issue/problem/attack to even cause simple stuff like that to not work. It is working now. The tech teams must be pulling a very long weekend working on this around the clock, trying to fix things.

Well it's Monday for me and not a word from Apple on this. We shall see if they make any announcement later on but I'm not expecting them to.
They don't like to acknowledge faults when they occur.

It's only just past midnight in California. If they do release a statement today it won't be until normal working hours, and probably not until late in the day.

I reckon you should change your Apple ID Email. Then see if it keeps happening.

Mine made be reset and now I can't use app specific passwords. I login using my ID, it works fine. I use the same password (Copying and pasting, not typing) and it says my password is wrong when I try to create one. It's basically useless now.

Called support on Friday night and they said there was no issue but couldn’t explain what happened. They said I had no choice but to reset password which I replied that doing that will screw up the rest of my devices and app passwords on my other computers. They assured me it wouldn’t. Guess what ANOTHER LIE FROM APPLE! 😡 This morning on my work computer I am getting pop ups for password log in that I can’t stop. It’s not taking the password I changed it to on Friday and locked my account again. I am at the point I am done with this company. They hire based on their agenda and not qualifications. This company is not the same as when Jobs was running it and I for one am sick of it. Let it burn! 🔥

Same experience. Fantastical suddenly lost its app specific password and I can't create one because Apple doesn't like my new password. Awesome.

My iPhone is fixed but my appletv’s and my PC with iCloud just will not work at all. Same new password, just won’t take it! States my iCloud account is locked now on my PC. After the 5 month battle with the Bluetooth not working on my 15 Pro Max and that being fixed overnight with not a word from Apple admitting there was an issue. I honestly think I’m just done at this point.

Happened to my account on Friday as well. The new 'Security Delay' feature made me wait an hour to reset my account password on my iPhone. I tried resetting my password and got an error, but the reset must have stuck because the new password I set eventually worked. Now, Monday morning, I'm logging in to my Mac Book, and it's saying I'm locked out of my account AGAIN and have to repeat this all over again. Annoying AF! Apple needs to acknowledge this problem so we're not left to assume our accounts are all under attack by some nefarious 3rd party. Has anyone contacted Apple and received any sort of explanation for this?

I knew this would happen when the EU forced Apple to allow downloading apps from outside the App Store. [/sarcasm ... sort of]

That’s the actual issue with this. In the moment I was concerned someone was trying to hack my account. Apple should have addressed this as soon as it happened.
This. I sent very terse messages to my family chat to ask which one of you guys has been mistyping my password and causing me to get locked out. Everyone denied it, but all got the mental side eye. Worrying that you're being brute force attacked in a Friday night was not enjoyable.

Tried to enter the (newly reset) password on my Apple Watch like six times last night. It just doesn't react when I put the new one in. Nice.
This happened to me as well both copy/pasting and manually typing (my shiny new 42 char passphrase). Apple Support told me to force reboot both my watch and iPhone. When the watch rebooted it still hade the Update Apple ID notification, but pressing it just fixed the issue after a spinning and no pw entry was required.

Stolen Device Protection one-hour delay while sitting at home was annoying. Apple needs to fix that.
Definitely this, and even the Support person I talked to had no idea what algorithm determines where my home is, or how to add a second location. This coupled with at least my inability to use my Recovery Contact to fix me is a real issue that Apple needs to address. Hopefully they craft a comforting message to the affected later today.

I did an online chat with Apple. They were unable to help but did elevate it to a senior advisor. They're calling me this evening. (I told them I was at work and couldn't do a call before 5:30 PM)

Trying this now. Thanks!

Edit: Crap. Same thing. My watch says

> Update Apple ID Settings
> Some account services require you to sign in again

So I copy my new iCloud password to the clipboard on my iPhone, hit Continue on the watch, and then tap into the Password field on the watch. My iPhone pops up the little Apple Watch Keyboard Text Input thing, so I paste the new password in there and then... nothing. The watch throws up a little spinner icon for a second at the top left of the screen, but then is still waiting for me to put in the password. I tried inputting the 20+ character password directly on the watch but it's taking a lower-case o to be a 0 and I can't get it to get past that. I can confirm that the iPhone text entry method works in other apps, but doesn't seem to work in that iCloud password field.

The watch *seems* to be working fine otherwise, but just every once in a while throws up that same Update Apple ID Settings screen.

Just my two cents on my experience. MacBook Pro, iPhone iPad updated. At first I like many thought this was Fishing attack Chris of all the intrusions, but then instead of starting from my iPhone I started from my MacBook Pro settings. Change the password and from there it was pretty much a breeze. I had to login again on my iPhone because I deleted that account and just asked me for confirmation the new password and changed and updated flawlessly.

For once.

Three days later, it seems like the amount of junk mail I was getting on that account which had skyrocket in the past two months has ended. Junk mail now. So I don’t know if this is a reaction to that or what, but it seems to be working better than it was before. Let’s hope that holds.

I write this simply because the junk mail drop is a surprising development.

There are widespread reports of Apple users being locked out of their Apple ID overnight for no apparent reason, requiring a password reset before they can log in again.

apple-id-account.jpg

Users say the sudden inexplicable Apple ID sign-out is occurring across multiple devices. When they attempt to sign in again they are locked out of their account and asked to reset their password in order to regain access.

This has led to additional Apple ID issues for users with Stolen Device Protection enabled who are away from a trusted location, as well as any app-specific passwords previously set up in iCloud also being reset.

As noted by 9to5Mac, user reports about the problem began appearing on social media at around 8 p.m. Eastern Time and became increasingly prevalent into the early hours of the morning.

MacRumors staff members have also been affected by the service outage, which does not appear to have been picked up by Apple's own System Status webpage.

We have contacted Apple for comment and will update readers if we hear back. Have you been affected by the Apple ID issue? Let us know in the comments.
