Makes sense and better for the customer. The amount of calls I have gotten when working Apple support side, lots of customers are clueless on what and Apple ID is.

Honestly, it’s most likely because Digital IDs will begin rolling out in the next few years and especially by 2030, and this simplifies any potential confusion there.

EDIT: to be clear, by digital IDs I mean for internet use. Not a digital copy of photo IDs.

Something like this was my guess as well. This isn't a whole lot different than Microsoft taking "Azure Active Directory" and renaming the whole thing "Entra". People hated the rebranding of a well-known service/name and the way doing so forces MANY people to revise educational/training materials around it. But Microsoft reasoned it would help avoid confusion between it and Windows Server Active Directory, plus communicate the multiplatform, multi-cloud nature of it.

It seems as companies keep expanding their offerings, they find the names of their older products or services don't make as much sense as they used to.

I just wish Apple and the media rights owners could come to an agreement on transferring the licenses for all the videos and music I have (had to) purchase on my original non-Apple email "Apple Account" so I can merge it with the Apple email "Apple Account" I created when I signed up for Mobile Me and not have to continue to maintain two "Apple Accounts" - one for media and one for everything else.
Didn’t Tim promise this some years ago?

This will be so that the dumb proles don't get confused by robots demanding their Digital ID at checkpoints.

I think they should just call it...

"Apple"

That fits in with the hyper minimal everything..

"Log in with your Apple"

"Why is everyone confused?"
-Apple spokesperson talking about Apple and the new Apple for Apple users on their Apple

Just let me merge my 20 years of iTunes purchases at xxxxxx@mac.com with my data account I lost during the dotMac transition that is now xxxxxx@icloud.com. Purchases and data in one account… I can only dream.
This... I mean I had to buy some stuff again at some point because I decided to make the switch...
There's still some things that I don't have, that I had in the past... It's a joke at this point.

We should be able to transfer all purchases from one account to another, and if they're scared people do to share stuff between friends, etc... well then limit it at 1X/year, or once transferred, you cannot transfer it back to the old account.

I don't really use Appe I.D, i only have a Mac mini, so the majoirty of the time I don;lt need my computer linked up to Apple ID all the time. i use it for the odd time i get something from the app store and then I will sign out again.

i used to used windows before I got this mini last year and I never had an MS account, never needed one, I only got a Apple ID as I was going to buy the MAc direct from Apple, but got it cheaper from another place.

so it makes no odds to me what they call it as I only use it once in a blue moon.

It would be great Apple would make AppleID account name rules more flexible finally? E.g. - possibility to replace main (initial) icloud.com e-mail address with icloud alias.

Microsoft has perfect implementation here: you can use any e-mail address (both outlook.com or external one) or phone number as you username (or alias) and change it anytime.

“Sources familiar with Apple's work have told MacRumorsthat Apple is experimenting with the new Apple Account name, and it could be introduced as soon as this year.”

“Experimenting” with the new Apple Account name? How does that work, LOL?

That’s been my frustration for so many years now. I can’t let go of my old non email Apple ID since there are so many purchases made on there. They need to figure this out.

With all the biometric authentication methods they have now, I suppose it might start to seem reasonable to infer "Apple ID" means you're expected to unlock your device with an apple.

Apple Pay and Apple Account, now enter customers with very heightened security alert [paranoid to a certain level]

Apple Phone Representative: Can I have your Apple Account?
Customer: Why would I give you my Apple Account?

Can I have your Apple Account ID?

That was my thought too. Distinguishes the account from whatever IDs that go into Apple wallet.
