Blue Velvet, your earlier post wasn't answering the OPs question either. You were supposing that everyone should think iLife and Mac OS X is the best there is. That is quite typical of the Mac community, which you are condemning in your post.

*sigh*

I gave a short reply based on the time available to me this morning based on what I thought were factors that they hadn't considered.

I did not belittle the OP or patronise them, I did not advise him or her to go with something else, I did not complain about the surfeit of threads on the same topic here. I did not derail the thread with chatty posts between people who were thinking they were being clever... posts which have been deleted, by the way.

That is what I am talking about... this all-pervading smugness and irrelevance that often ruins this forum for newcomers. As a moderator but as a relatively longstanding member, I'm interested in keeping this forum useful, trouble-free and relevant to all, especially to newcomers who have serious questions. They deserve our respect, not people crapping all over their threads.

And so, if people have got nothing constructive to bring to a thread started with a serious intent, then please don't bother at all.

There's no need to respond to this. I'm not going to discuss this in this thread any further. If anyone would like to create a thread on discussing our community and its behaviour towards certain topics, they are welcome to do so in the Site and Feedback Forum. Thanks.

Well I want the computer for, photography, some games, music, internet/e-mail, money/date management and some basic word processing tasks, nothing really intense or heavy (although I guess you could say Photography is)...

Well in this case I think it's really up to you if you want a change or if you want to learn/experience something new.

I never felt comfortable in windows before I switched during graphic design college in 2001, so a change was more than welcomed for me! :)

But to each their own and if you feel comfortable in windows there is nothing wrong with that.

If you are interested in a change I guess you can't do much wrong with the iMac, either you can run windows on it if you don't like Mac OS X or you can sell it after a couple of weeks with little or no loss.

Please don't suggest that !!!
As a Mac follower I love the opportunity to feel smug ..

Then can we limit the Dell vs Apple to 1 a month?

Or could there be some sort of the "Dell Vs Mac" main thread where people wont have to post these anymore, because I do totally agree with your post Blue Velvet the age old "PC vs Mac" or "Should I buy a Dell" has just become a flame fest with no serious input what so ever.

Good luck!

I have an iMac and a Dell and both are good computers, however, I'd recommend getting an Apple. The Dell hasn't had too many problems, but it just isn't as easy to use as the iMac. My apple computer took less than 10 minutes to unpack and get up and running, and once it's running, it just runs. It doesn't bother me with updates and software reminders, it's so simple. Unless you are really into the design of the computer (the iMac is much sexier than my Dell), I really think the only difference is the OS. Tiger is great. My Dell runs XP Pro (I won't get near Vista, my friends have had lots of problems with it), which is fine but a little out of date and has all the "common problems" of Windows.
I think if you are going Windows, go Dell. I haven't been happy with my Sony Vaios or HP computers. Good luck with your decision, and I hope you get a product that works for you!

I'd wait for a revision on the Dell XPS 210 (220?) if you're looking for a Windows only solution. The G965 is getting quite old.

How about a separate forum. PC Comparisons.

How about a separate forum. PC Comparisons.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. More of a purchasing guide but aimed more a the stock standard PC vs the Apple option that weights the hardware/software in the intangible value added features.

And back to the topic....

I've owned 1 iMac, 3 Apple Laptops, 2 Dell, an Acer laptop and a few PC that I have built myself, personally Dell vs Apple there is no comparison for features, hardware and software the Apple laptop wins hands down everytime.

I've had less problems with my Apple purchases than the Dell.

For photo work, there is nothing like using iPhoto for organizing, and setting it to edit photos in an external editor, and doing your editing in PhotoShop. The best of both worlds. iPhoto handles all the trudgery of file management and photo organizing, and photoshop for the high-end stuff. They integrate very well with the iPhoto preferences for setting an external editor.
