Also opening it up is the way legislation and anti competitive law is trending. Apple should become a hardware developer first and simmer a bit on the services side. Thats what got them in to trouble in the first place.
I agree, the problem I see with that is it is extremely expensive to develop new hardware.
I think we're to the point to where they built themselves in to a technological corner. What do you do to an iPhone or iPad at this point to make it "better?" It's a slab of glass and metal that's already powerful enough to run the next 7-10 years worth of OS updates. (Macs can and will always be ready for the next new thing because of the nature of the machine. And give credit to the M class processors.)
"Services" is a relatively new accounting line item. While I don't like them going down that path, investors want and need to see growth. Maybe we're saying the same thing, but until the OS team pulls their heads out of their rears, services is the only current growth path because sadly Macs are just a tiny part of Apple's bottom line.
