Apple may be implementing a new reservation system for customers who opt to wait in line outside of a retail store to purchase a new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, reports 9to5Mac. The company is said to be handing out training materials to employees on a new "virtual queue" system called Reservation Pass.

Reservation Pass will reportedly keep track of the line position of each customer, syncing with the store's inventory information to ensure customers waiting in line will be able to receive a device.
This new system is called Reservation Pass. It will sync with Back Of House inventory information in realtime so Apple doesn't handout too many product reservations. Customers will receive their digital reservation card via SMS or Email. A reservation allows the customer to come back at any point during the day to make their purchase. Customers could also leave line in the past but it was not encouraged since the physical card reservation system was not as accurate as the new Reservation Pass system.
Currently, Apple hands out paper cards to those standing in line, allowing them to reserve an available device, but the company often waits until just before purchase time to provide the cards. It is likely the Reservation Pass system will work similarly, with customers being registered shortly before the opening of the store, which actually provides little end benefit to those who wait in line overnight or longer.

Customers will, however, be able to reserve an iPhone after waiting in line and then purchase it later in the day should any issues arise, such as problems with carrier authorization or upgrade eligibility. This will also prevent people from selling the physical cards on release day.

Both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus will be available for purchase beginning on Friday, September 19. Apple is accepting preorders this year, and will take orders starting on Friday, September 12, likely at 12:01 AM Pacific Time.

The iPhone 6 is available in 16, 64, and 128 GB capacities starting at $199 with a two year contract, while the iPhone 6 Plus is available in 16, 64, and 128 GB capacities starting at $299 with a two-year contract.

Now THIS is forward thinking and what I find makes Apple different than the rest of them all. Jealous Scamsung is running around as we speak to come up with a lame ad campaign against it hah!

4 years

I'm in line since 2010 to buy a low end iPhone that doesn't make me feel like I was raped by several different mammals.

Since the 5c will be sold at 399 € (8 GB!!!) and the 5s at 599 €, I guess I will be in 4 more years.

these virtual passes need to be handed out earlier to prevent everyone in line bringing twenty of their buddies at 6/7 in the morning.

Yep, I'm getting in line really early to get rid of my perfectly good iPhone 5S.

Agreed. I've waited in line a few times and watching the line in front of me grow twice as long just a couple hours before the store's opening is so frustrating. Saving your buddy a seat at the movies... that's cool. Saving your buddy a seat in the iPhone line after people have been waiting all night, MORALLY REPREHENSIBLE.

So when will they give these out?

Some lines have had people wait say from 6pm or so the day before - so is this going to happen at say midnight? From some long queues, anyone starting queue say from 3am unlikely to get a handset (depending on stock).

Pre-order doesn't usually necessarily arrive on launch day - and within say an hour, stock for first two week's of deliveries could sell out

Question: I currently use prepaid on AT&T. Am I able to purchase a phone at full price in store? If so, should I get an AT&T phone or a Verizon one? :apple:

Thank you :apple:, the worst part of launches is when foreign people come and scalp all the tickets.

Apple still wants people to wait in line. It generates a huge amount of publicity... so I'm guessing the digital queue system is going to work very similarly to the cards. Cards are not given out until fairly close to the store's opening.

Still I rather not having to risk it, I'll preorder it at 3AM on friday. That way I can guarantee that I get the color I want.

Wait so I am waiting in line for the new iPhone. (yes i get it get my priorities straight and all). Does this mean I can go pick up a digital pass now?

Quite sad really. I really don't get folk who queue up for many hours/days for the next iPhone. I would love to stick one in a jail cell while I unboxed my pre-order in front of them to see if they can continue with life after such a horrific event.

Does this mean I can pre-order an iPhone over the internet first and pick it up in store on launch day?

Anything to prevent the groups of Chinese scalpers... I'm all for it.

You'll want to buy an unlocked one. Since you're buying off contract, there's no reason you wouldn't want the unlocked one since it works on nearly all carriers and has a higher resale value.

I'm sure you will get burn for this comment but its 100% true. Last year first 60 people in my backwater mall were of certain nationality. And you know these people didn't buy for themselves.

Why spend 8-12 hours waiting in line for no guarantee of purchasing an iPhone when you can simply log onto their website in 3 days and preorder it? If you aren't able to get it ordered within 30-75 minutes then chances are that you'll receive it a few days or a week late. At least those 30-75 minutes won't leave you empty handed.

The Apple Store I went to previously over here doesn't even serve you if you didn't preorder it online and sends u away. Lines r therefore more than pointless. And that wasn't even just on launch day, even a week later they were like nope we only serve people who reserved one online
