Abrams would be foolish to take the deal with Apple. HBO can reach so many more TV sets. No way am I buying an Apple TV to watch Abrams’ Sifi show. I would watch it on HBO though.

What sci-fi universes can he destroy next? He already got the big 2. Maybe he can destroy X-Files. Or adapt StarGate back to the big screen as a loud derivative blockbuster. Switch genres and trash James Bond. I can’t wait!

J.J. Abrams does what Apples does best, rehash things and make them better.

I don't know, Star wars was pretty horrible, another death star...come one!

And he only did one good star trek movie. The second was awful, no one has that many daddy issues.

Personally, I would pass on his story. His* stuff is overrated, similar to Apple!

Ugh. Force Awakens was terrible.
Surprised he is still getting work after that.
Yeah, a terrible $2b box office and 3rd highest grossing movie of all time.

It was a “safe” bet, but it was not terrible. People like you think no matter what is put out, it’s not good enough.

Like all the MR experts questioning Apple’s strategy and marketing while they keep selling more of everything, keeping making more money, and their stock keeps making new highs. You experts still know more.

For those unaware, Star Wars has 30+ years of rich storytelling.

Chewie, not Han, was killed. Luke rebuilt the entire Jedi Order and it has been thriving ever since. He married a Sith and had a child named Ben (gee a son named Ben. where have I heard that one before). Han and Leia had three kids, two who died - one after becoming a Sith Lord, started a galaxy-wide war and was killed by his sister, as well as having a granddaughter.

These along with countless others is what Abrams aped and/or destroyed. It's not about money. Star Wars/Trek movies are going to make money when they come out. That's a given. It's the 30 years of stories that Abrams and the Mouse destroyed that piss me off.

I don't understand Apple being in a bidding war with anyone over something they want. If they are serious about content and this is something they truly want, they have enough cash to outbid literally any other company without even thinking twice about it. They should show the industry just how serious they are and throw some muscle (cash) around. Maybe they will start to be taken seriously when they start to act like they are serious.
No, in a real bidding war, you keep outbidding your rivals, but you don't immediately bid your maximum. You hope to win the war without spending your max, so that the excess money can be spent on other properties.

To be taken seriously, they should spend what it takes, but they don't get any extra "seriousness" points by spending more than it takes.

I wonder who would have taken over the role of Han, since Harrison Ford (the heretic) made killing off Han Solo a condition of his appearing in the film.

WWDC is gearing up for a big Apple TV reveal. Apple has enough upcoming tv shows to make a subscription service worth it. Include the broadcast networks that today require a cable login and use the App Store to add additional a la carte channels like HBO, all organized under the TV app, and you have a complete cable tv replacement.

Oh I do wish Apple had cut a deal to buy HBO out from Time Warner, before their sale. I hate to see two companies I love at odds. Mom, Dad, stop fighting!

If there’s any media company with the exceptional standards and historical commitment to industry-leading excellence that Apple has, it’s HBO. I couldn’t think of a better match. Would be crushed if HBO somehow fell into the hands of Amazon, Netflix or Google.

Just put documents in a blender and get chimps to tape them back together Willy-nilly. Save some money; better content.

Lovely. Bid for a guy who was handed the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises and managed to flush them both down the toilet. Pass.
Well, it's not like both franchises weren't full of stinkers already. I present you with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek: Nemesis, and Star Trek: Insurrection. And Star Wars I, II, and III. The recent Abrams movies aren't perfect, but they're much better than those, I put the Abrams movies squarely in the middle of both franchises overall. And this is pretty badass:

This thing they're bidding on isn't continuing a movie franchise, it's building a series from scratch. Fringe was great and I also enjoyed Alias to a lesser extent. Might as well give him a chance, if you don't like it, don't watch it, it's as simple as that. I don't watch Scandal or The Mentalist, but I don't get angry that they exist in the world either.

Like Apple Maps, or notifications, or Siri, or the podcast app.....

Apple literally invented the podcast app and owns that market, like most everything it decides to compete in. Apple Maps will be used over a trillion times this year and even though multiple other mapping apps are free and can be downloaded in less than a minute to the iPhone, Apple Maps usage dwarfs the second place GM in usage. Siri is by far the most used personal assistant in the world and knows more languages than all of the others by far. Those are just two of the services that are excelling despite the misinformation. Indeed, Apple services are so successful, they dwarf the revenue of all of Facebook and by itself would be one of the largest revenue producers in the world.

Sounds about right. Hire Michael Bay while you’re at it. But don’t worry, your hardware and software products (you know, the stuff you sell because you’re a hardware and software company) don’t need any attention.

Apple: We make ridiculously priced fashion computers and phones to fund our Hollywood and political aspirations.

Did you not watch The Force Awakens or the Star Trek movies he did?

or pretty much any good sifi movie that he had a hand in. That post you quoted made no sense. This is absolutely worth a bidding war. The name alone brings millions of viewers.

First of all most Star Wars fans loved it - but that's subjective. What isn't, is its success: it made over $2 billion just at the box office, probably just as much from streaming/DVDs/Blu-rays, etc. After that kind of success J.J. Abrams is guaranteed all the work he wants for life. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=starwars7.htm

The completely detached from reality complaining at MacRumors amazes me.

And what's likely to be Apple's price (with their markup right off the top) for this "complete cable TV replacement"?

BTW: J.J. Abrams does seem to be an Apple fan, I saw him talk at WWDC a few years ago (2012 or 13)

Hardware: Not any more than what it is right now, possibly less (no reason to upgrade it, anyway - other than software upgrades which are free). If you thing that Apple overcharges in data, compare Apple Music & iTunes Movies charges vs. it's competitors.
