I posted this earlier but I got no response. Any idea if these will FIT into the first gen iPhone?

How would anyone know? They don't come out til Oct. I can't imagine they wouldn't fit...every headphone Apple has made fits the 1st iPhone.

So 2.1 is here, Apple's In-Ear headphone page still doesn't mention iPhone compatibility. Apparantly triple click to go to previous track works with 2.1, this gives me a bit of hope that maybe the in-ears will work on the iPhone.

my 3g iPod headphones don't fit my first gen iPhone. I just had to slice them down today to get them to fit. If you aren't sure then it's probably best u don't post; it just blurs the accuracy of the whole forum thread.

Here's hoping firmware 2.1 will make these headphones compatible!

My guess is this, even if it is a software implementation that would make it work, that change would break the functionality of the old headphones. Therefore, Apple won't be making the change.

Yup triple click works on 2.1 I just tried it :) Hopefully the in ears do work.

I can confirm. Just tried triple tap with an iPhone 3G with 2.1 and it skipped back a song. Can someone that still has a firmware previous to 2.1 test the triple tap to see what happens? I would assume that, if it does not skip back, then the iPhone 2.1 firmware contained the correct software for the new remote features available on the in-ear headphones.

I tried that triple tap on thursday when I found out about the new in-ear headphones and it didnt do it. It first skiped a song because of the two clicks then it paused it cause of the third click. Im exited about the new headphones, I really wouldnt care about the volume as long as the clicking and mic work. If the volume works then ill be very happy Apple ;)

Well there you have it. These will be fully compatible with iPhone.

Maybe the Apple web page about these in-ear headphones doesn't include the iPhone because when they were announced and first appeared on the apple site the iPhone did not have the 2.1 firmware available yet, so they would in fact not be compatible with the iPhone. Makes sense to me.

If it does I didn't know that. Anyway, my iphone is locked so I guess it wouldn't work for me. hmmmm

I'll try it when I get home.

It should still work also if you double click the home button (before u unlock it) it brings up audio controls.

There you have what?? How does triple click functionality guarantee full compatibility? If the the volume control doesn't work, should I come to you for a refund? Unless you work for Apple, I don't see how you could know.

And 2.1 is now out, but the description on apple.com still does not mention the iPhone. Strike 2.

Interesting thing is that there is no mention of the iPhone at all on that page. However, it says older generation iPods can pass through audio with the headphones, but I'm 100% sure that the headphones will work for audio with the iPhone too. Yet there is no mention of this. I'm thinking it's correct that they will work with audio as well as playback controls/mic, except no volume functionality. The reason they don't mention iPhone is that they are positioning this product as an iPod accessory not an iPhone accessory. If it's true that the volume switching won't work, they wouldn't want to publish it as both an iPhone and iPod accessory as it will infuriate a lot of iPhone customers that the volume switching doesn't work even if it stated that in the compatibility listing.

If the new headphones are not compatible with iphone, that would be like releasing a wireless mouse that only works on iMacs and not on Macbooks or any other machines? Just doesn't make sense.

I hope some website who get review things from Apple test them with the iPhone when they come, that's the only way we will know if they work i guess.

Honestly if you guys don't know you shouldn't post sh*t you don't know...

Can you take a generic pair of headphones/earphones/earbuds/etc... plug them into the iPhone and they'll work? YES

Can you take that SAME pair and plug them into your iPod Touch and they'll work? YES

So that means the hardware inside the two devices is the same... for a standard "3.5mm mini plug" used in audio, there are three "connectors" or rings. They're Left Channel, Right Channel, & Ground. Apple adds a "fourth" ring for an additional signal... which in case of the iPhone it was for the mic/button.

I can say for sure, that audio would definitely work (new apple in-ear buds)... NO QUESTIONS. Now will the buttons work, maybe not and that's only due to potential software inside the device, since the "hardware" connections are the same. So that would mean Apple could down the road provide a software fix to all these to work, if they wouldn't already.

I'm pretty sure we all realise audio will work, the question is what else will work.

Personally I think everything but volume will work.

There is a new support document that describes how the iPhone (3G or not) is somewhat not compatible with the new in ear headphones:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3310

Basically, the in ear headphones are fully compatible with the iPhone EXCEPT for the volume (+/-) buttons.

I really don't get it. Wouldn't the volume +/- use the same method and protocol as the center button, in which case, this would be a software limitation, not a hardware limitation?

If someone smarter than me knows why, please explain how this would be a hardware difference between the iPod touch 2nd generation and the iPhone?

Whats the center button do? I wouldn't mind not having volume controls.. I'd like the ability to go forward/back between tracks though..

The center button on the headphones has been around since the 1st generation iPhone. It does all of this:

Just squeeze the microphone together, and the button gets pressed.

The buttons functions:

In call...

* Press once to answer a call
* Press twice to send the call to voicemail
* Press once to hang up a call

In call while second call coming in...

* click once to hold current call and switch to new call
* hold for 2 secs and release to ignore new call

Out of call...

* Press once to activate iPod and play song
* Press once to pause song
* Press twice to skip to next song
[* Brand new in iPhone 2.1 software: Press three times to skip back a song]

apple is going to make me go crazy from stupid mistakes like not allowing the volume work on the iPhone
hopefully, it will work on the next software update in January.

It has to be a software issue, there is no other logical explanation. In which case, yes, Apple should enable volume controls on the iPhone.

No idea why apple would not make them 100% iPhone compatible...reach a wider audience and make more money
