I could never see Steve Jobs buying Beats

not in a million years. One of the worst purchases ever in my opinion. Simply horrible. What a waste of money.

Apple can't put out a display in two years with USB 3 and a proper power cord for all their macbook users . . . yet has 3 billion to buy to buy a headphone company. Come on Apple!

Apple wants to make money with Beats. Period. Lots of people who are idolized by today's youth use Beats. Business wise it makes sense.

Apple's business lines in with its "trendiness" but not its quality.

I don't buy Apple because it is trendy (though it certainly seems to be that way now), I buy it because of quality.

Beats doesn't have the quality. Bad fit for Apple.

This may be about the streaming service but how long is it going to take Apple to spin it into it's own streaming service? A year?

Meanwhile Spotify, Google, and Rdio will continue to grow and offer better options. I mean my god right now on Spotify desktop you can listen to any song on any album for free. You just get ads every few songs.

Which is why Spotify is yet to turn a profit. They have to pay labels a fortune to do that.

Yep. This is about bringing a music service to other ecosystems (android, WP). It's not about headphones.

I think the headphones/Beats audio integration with iDevices are still a significant part of it, not necessarily based on their quality, but how they will help attract new customers who desire the Beats image, while keeping others from jumping ship to Android/Galaxy (in addition to the larger screen of the next iPhone).

Maybe they have an advanced compression algorithm like Pied Piper. The only good thing that might come from this is they’ll stop making beats products.

I wouldnt say that Beats headphones are bad quality.

They are decent - They are just ridiculously over priced.

Their $400 headphones sound like a really good pair of $150 headphones.

This acquisition is a bit of a mystery to me! There must see some serious potential in Beat's music streaming service, cause their hardware division certainly isn't leading edge!

This post is unworthy of a response... It's actually quite insulting. Comparing Beats to Bose... wow! And I'm not saying Bose are incredible, but com'on... Beats are horrible.

You're implying that I'm comparing them, when I'm merely stating that they're both terrible and overpriced.

The general public does not look at Beats as a junk brand. They have a good reputation with millions of people. Apple has a good reputation with quality, yet they have plenty of problems and quality control issues that the consumer could care less about. They buy both in droves. You can't get any more trendy than Apple is today. Apple stopped being a niche brand shortly after the iPhone was released. Now it is as common as can be.

iPhone 6 with front facing beats audio speakers....HTC won't know what hit them ;)

I agree that front facing speakers are the bomb but people are already complaining about bezels with the iPhone 6 markup. When you factor in the mandatory home button it will be a mess. Even the HTC M8 is getting criticized over wasted space where the capacitive buttons use to be at.

Apple could have bought nearly any company in the world with all its US$ 160 billion in cash.

It could have bought NVIDIA for some US$ 10.3 billion (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=NVDA) or even Intel for US$ 131.1 billion (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=INTC). Or Disney, for US$ 142.9 billion (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=DIS). Or Amazon for US$ 132.7 billion (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=AMZN).

Why did it have to buy this company for US$ 3.2 billion? Does it make sense? It doesn't, in my mind.

A companies value is not what it will cost. Whatsapp was valued at 1.5 billion when Facebook bought it for 19 billion.

Apple products are overpriced too, yet they sell like crazy.

Apple products are high quality products sold at a premium.
Beats products are not high quality.

The people who buy Beats don't think they are poor quality. They have the same feeling about Beats as you do for Apple. :) Beats sells a boatload of headphones.

Why would their music streaming service be worth 3.2 billion dollars to apple's shareholders?

what kind of valuation method are they using?
where did they pull the 3.2 billion number?

It gives Apple instant access to the Android market (where Beats Music is currently a thing) and Quadruples (at a minimum) their potential user base. Apple will allow Android users to purchase music via the app (and then eventually movies).

Lots of celebs and sports figures do, so there is plenty of recognition with the general public. Not to mention dj's.

What happens when the headphones (if they even continue) are no longer called Beats and sport the Apple logo instead? It seems like shunning anything "corporate" is the thing to do (even though in reality Beats is exactly that) and the anti-Apple sentiment in particular seems to be the new normal.

I think it's too late for the iPhone 6 to get Beats audio. It's much more likely that the iPhone 6s gets it and that would make sense as that model will need something significant to differentiate it from the iPhone 6, at least internally. Personally, I don't know if it would be significant enough.

The home button is not mandatory by any means. Just in case you were thinking touch ID the sensor can be behind the screen.
