If you think this is about hardware, then you're not paying attention.

Why build a streaming service when you can buy one that already has all of the contracts and technology in place? Buy it, integrate it, and profit.

Forget the headphones..... this is all about the music service. Why spend money creating/engineering a subscriber service. I'm sure if this happens, they will not beat spotify at their own game.

It's not about the service. There is nothing technically challenging about creating a streaming service, it's all about the contracts. IF apple is willing to pay 3 billion for the music, I am sure we would have a spotify like service from Apple already.

Why? Beats is terrible at audio. If it was Bose/Bowers & Wilkins then I wouldn't be so surprised.

That you put Bose and B & W in the same sentence shows that you know little about audio to be suggesting that Beats is terrible.

Though...

Beats is terrible.

So is Bose.

B & W is in a totally different league and I typically don't like talking down to people, and I apologize, but it's just colossally ridiculous to be talking about B & W in the same league as mainstream garbage like Bose and Beats.

According to the Financial Times, the deal is still in the works with some details yet to be ironed out, suggesting "talks could still fall apart."

Great job Beats guys. Apple loves it when you leak these kinds of details.

Update 3:30 PM PT: Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times have confirmed that Apple is in talks with Beats Electronics over a possible acquisition.

WHAT?! This is the Apple that has "doubled down" on secrecy?!

haha looks like Beats paid good money to get people to drum up this rumor.

Patented Technology

I don't think it's about the headphones, Apple will probably keep that away from their product in their own brand...

I think it's about:
1. The streaming service
2. Hardware Technology. I tested an HTC 8X Windows phone with integrated Beats circuit, and I have to say, even with regular earbuds, when 'beats' is turned on, sound is truly incredible.

You would never see me buy beats headphones, but I don't mind them integrated in the iPhone just like they were with that HTC 8X

To think that this is not a good buy is the same thing as not having confidence in Apple making the headphones better. And for those knocking the beats brand.....you are foolish. The brand itself is very strong. I'm assuming Apple has plans to build better quality headphones to go with the strong brand itself. Like many, I believe a big part of the decision to buy was the streaming service. With the iPhone, music service, speakers, and Headphones, Apple will control the the entire music experience. Especially amongst the younger generation.

And I'm assuming HTC will have to stop using the technology in their phones and Apple will implement it in theirs somehow. That will be a huge plus.

WTF? Seriously... Apple stands for beautiful looking products, which may have their price but also stand for great quality.

And now this? Really? Those totally overpriced fashion headphones sounding not even half as good as you'd expect for that price?

Very silly move. I hope they just take the streaming service and discontinue the headphones.

Jesus, if Apple ends up supplying crappy Beats headphones with each purchase I'm going to seriously rethink buying Apple products. Talk about going for the younger generation.

Why didn't they buy Sennheiser? Or one of the small pro audio companies?

This makes no sense. Beats makes low-quality headphones. The music service is a separate entity with a separate investor group, so I don't think that would be part of the deal. This is completely baffling.

Does Sennheiser have a turn key streaming service that Apple can integrate immediately into iTunes/Music App?

So, what does this mean for Beats? Does it mean that Beats technology will no longer appear in any other devices and that Apple products will gain this technology? Or does it simply mean that Beats will continue as they are with guidance from Apple?

noooooo beats are terrible, include these with iPods!

Don't understand the hate for Beats. I have had Solo HD's for over three years of every day usage of about 6hrs (yup, I listen to a lot of music/podcasts). Best headphones and investment I've ever made. Plus the streaming service looks real nice - Beats have style as does Apple. Better than buying gray geeky no-name headphone companies and only then turning them into something nice.

Sorry to oppose almost everyone, but I really hope this one goes through.

Buy a pair Aiaiai TMA-1 then.

If Apple is doing this for the Beats audio products and brand name then it is a horrible decision. However, I think Jimmy Iovine may have connections with Apple over the Mastered for iTunes effort and historically through Steve Jobs, so I can see an "in" there through Mr. Iovine.

I'm not saying that this makes it "right," but this could be a case of making a deal based primarily on who knows who in the industry.

People may not like Bose's acoustics, but their noise canceling is pretty excellent. This whole idea got me thinking of the iPhone using noise canceling to hear better while on the phone in a noisy place. That would be nice.

Again, I understand this is pretty off topic.

Unless they are going to make a major shift in the way that they operate as a business, Apple does not buy companies to allow them to continue operating (I can't think of a single one).

They want the patents, technology, and people. In this case, they want the streaming service.
