Wow Apple is being greedy, these prices are ridiculous. Overpriced ipad, overpriced stylus, overpriced Apple TV, and now overpriced AppleCare smh

I'm guessing the new screen is going to be a lot more to replace with 3D touch.

WRONG!
The law states that they must warrant an item for a reasonable term. Tis is 12 months however the law states if the phone is sold on contract from a carrier the iPhone must have a warranty for entire term. So Telstra etc give a second year warranty. If you walk into an Apple Store in year two they have no obligation to replace the item. AppleCare+ if you read the description gives you phone support for a full two years up from 60 days and also gives you two accidental damage replacements for the service fee ($149 for 6s). There is a common misconception about warranty with apple in oz. it's the carrier that gives you year two. If you buy outright you are only given 12 months

Any Apple product by default under Consumer Law, despite the claim of 12 months, has at least 26 months hardware coverage (this is reasonable to Apple but there is no upper limit), and telephone support via the AppleCare call centre. This is in addition to your statutory rights, not a replacement for them. It makes no difference if your phone is on contract or not, no matter the provider. This applies to everything you buy in Australia, including all outright phones as well - no restriction. Naturally this won't cover deliberate and wilful damage, water damage, or anything where it is not a manufacturing defect, or accidental damage.

I understand AppleCare Plus offers cheaper hardware repairs for the screen etc, however, if you don't want AppleCare + and don't need it, this does not imply your telephone and hardware support timeframe is any different at all. You still get over 2 years telephone and hardware support at no additional cost.

Isn't Consumer Law protection literally a statutory right?

No, they are separate but work together. You have your statutory warranty and support, and the packaging will say 12 months and this is because Consumer Law is in addition to this, not a replacement for these rights. It's automatically applied to everything sold in Australia - no conditions.

For $137 more assuming claim in the first six months you can get carrier coverage and that includes theft of the device.

It's likely because of the hardware? Ok MR. I'm guessing that's part of the bigger picture which is that because of things like iPhone bending, the increased size having more people with broken screens, has caused more of a "cost" to Apple since the 6 was introduced.

Some anecdotal evidence used, some based on articles I've read.

I'll be skipping it this year then. Looks like I'll be giving worth ave a try. They may be slow to pay but at least I'll get theft coverage.

I have had AppleCare for every device (and they've all had to use it mind you) but this year I may very well skip it on my wife's upgrade. The only thing that makes sense is that they're trying to push people into the new upgrade program.

Seriously? Apple has been disappointing recently. Base storage of iCloud still only 5gb, 16gb of storage on the 6s/+, a possibility (not yet confirmed) of the 6s/+ only having 1gb of RAM, and the San Francisco font...

I love Apple and their products, but I do feel they've became a bit greedy lately.

I could toss away my phone and my own insurance would cover it for less than Apple Care. Plus it covers everything else I own.
How much monthly is your insurance?

Over 2 years:
$7 mo = $168
$8 mo = $192
$9 mo = $216
$10 mo = $240

Now, how much is your deductible?
$170?
$200?

What does your insurance cover if you simply have a warranty issue in the second year?
Same deductible?
$0 with Apple Care

Yes, the price went up for new technology but remember to compare all costs and services.

I don't post here a lot. Is everyone always so negative? This is the biggest jump from iPhone to iPhone ever and I see nothing but complaints.

Out of all the people screaming to get rid of 16gb, do they forget that 64gb is the price of 32gb from the 5s?

I would like to see more free iCloud storage (maybe 5gb per device or 10gb total) but personally I just saved $12 per year on the 200gb plan. If I end up needing more I'll save half.

I am honestly curious how much R&D went into 3D Touch alone. Jonny Ives said many years. They did this and kept cost of iPhone the same. Parts have to be more expensive so I wasn't surprised at all that the display replacement went up.

This is just me looking at things logically and not emotionally.

Flame on!

AppleCare is not needed in Australia due to Consumer Law which guaranteed device repairs or replacement at no additional cost (as long as its no accidental damage), for at least 26 months. Consumer Law is in addition to your statutory rights, not a replacement for them.

However, if you want the cheaper repair options for screen etc which are not covered due to accidental damage, they you can get AppleCare +

The phones are also more expensive to cover that extra warranty. Apple isn't stupid.

But Consumer Law is a law. Which was passed in the Australian Parliament. It's a statute hence it's surely a statutory right?

When you say 'statutory warranty and support' what do you mean?
When you say '12 months on the packaging' what do you mean?

The way I understand it is that Apple provides a 1 year warranty as stated on the packaging, and then you have a statutory right, via the Consumer Law statute, to repair or replacement for manufacturing defects for at least 26 months as you said.

Apple's page here states that the Consumer Law protection offered in the UK is a statutory right. Apple's 1 year warranty is in addition to this statutory right.

Gotta agree. This makes AC+ a hard pill to swallow. Contemplating on going with squaretrade this year. Not sure.

You definitely do not get 2 years of telephone support without AppleCare+. Not sure if I was reading your post correctly though. 90 days is standard across the globe unless you have AC+

the only reason i get apple care is the accidental

Yeah, that's steep; especially since you won't get a new phone if you have to use the AppleCare+. The refurb I received when I finally had to make a claim last week was a solid phone. In hindsight shelling out almost $800 for a brand new iPhone 6 11 months prior makes this AC+ price a bitter pill to swallow.

Anyone else considering the new iPhone Upgrade Program? It looks more appealing given this increase in price. I'm getting the 128GB 6S, so 12 × $40.75 = $489/yr to have the newest iPhone with AppleCare+. If I bought it outright it would be $849 + $130 (2 yr min) = $979, minus the ~$400 max trade-in hassle = $579/yr. Less hassle, don't have to worry about trade-in and trade-in values, and I'll always have Apple Care. If I go the Verizon route I first of all have to extend my contract, and then I have to pay an extra $15/mo for two years plus $399 + $40 upgrade fee + $130 AppleCare+ and if have to wait two years between iPhone upgrades. Then after two years I might get a $200 trade-in. So Verizon comes out to $364.50/yr with the same iPhone and a contract lock-in. For me it's worth the extra $124.50/yr to always have the newest iPhone. Let me know if my math is off because it's late and I had a rough day at work and feel kinda sick lol.

Many people may prefer buying the phone outright and then resell it themselves. They could resell it easily after one year for 60% of its original value. They can then buy the newest model. And many people don't find the need for AppleCare for the first year given the 1-year limited warranty.
