Anyone else considering the new iPhone Upgrade Program? It looks more appealing given this increase in price. I'm getting the 128GB 6S, so 12 × $40.75 = $489/yr to have the newest iPhone with AppleCare+. If I bought it outright it would be $849 + $130 (2 yr min) = $979, minus the ~$400 max trade-in hassle = $579/yr. Less hassle, don't have to worry about trade-in and trade-in values, and I'll always have Apple Care. If I go the Verizon route I first of all have to extend my contract, and then I have to pay an extra $15/mo for two years plus $399 + $40 upgrade fee + $130 AppleCare+ and if have to wait two years between iPhone upgrades. Then after two years I might get a $200 trade-in. So Verizon comes out to $364.50/yr with the same iPhone and a contract lock-in. For me it's worth the extra $124.50/yr to always have the newest iPhone. Let me know if my math is off because it's late and I had a rough day at work and feel kinda sick lol.

I can't believe Apple is $100 cheaper with update program. Also the 6+ will fetch more than $400, probably more like $600.

Can I get join the Apple Update without Applecare? At its not cost levels, Squaretrade might be a better deal.

But Consumer Law is a law. Which was passed in the Australian Parliament. It's a statute hence it's surely a statutory right?

When you say 'statutory warranty and support' what do you mean?
When you say '12 months on the packaging' what do you mean?

The way I understand it is that Apple provides a 1 year warranty as stated on the packaging, and then you have a statutory right, via the Consumer Law statute, to repair or replacement for manufacturing defects for at least 26 months as you said.

Apple's page here states that the Consumer Law protection offered in the UK is a statutory right. Apple's 1 year warranty is in addition to this statutory right.

Statutory warranty and support is the 12 months Apple quote, and is on the packaging. However, this does not include Consumer Law, which is in addition to this and not a replacement for it. Apple's own site says "Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under Australian consumer law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure."

However Apple also try to be dodgy by only offering 90 days complimentary support, however under Consumer Law this restriction is waived an people get free technical support via phone for at least 26 months.

You definitely do not get 2 years of telephone support without AppleCare+. Not sure if I was reading your post correctly though. 90 days is standard across the globe unless you have AC+

Here in Australia, things are done differently. You have your statutory 12 months hardware and 90 days phone support, however Consumer Law (in addition to your statutory rights, not a replacement for them) overrides this 90 day limitation. In fact you get telephone and hardware coverage after 90 days at no additional cost up to and over 26 months. So, in Australia it makes no difference if you have AppleCare plus or not for phone and hardware support. Of course if accidental damage its a different story.

Yeah but my numbers were for the regular size and yeah, you'd be surprised. I'm trading my iPhone in to Gazelle and with some light scratches it's only worth like $430. When I do the 5% Amazon gift card bonus it's like $455 or so. Amazon's trade-in was kinda flakey for me last year, so I went elsewhere. But I think they were only offering $470. Gazelle gives a price lock window which is nice. I have until October 4th to send it in and get paid. That's especially good this year since the iPhone 6S is coming out a week later!

I prefer the gov't intervene in this....requiring Apple to provide apple care plus to everyone when purchasing over 400 dollar values.

I don't post here a lot. Is everyone always so negative? This is the biggest jump from iPhone to iPhone ever and I see nothing but complaints.

Out of all the people screaming to get rid of 16gb, do they forget that 64gb is the price of 32gb from the 5s?

I would like to see more free iCloud storage (maybe 5gb per device or 10gb total) but personally I just saved $12 per year on the 200gb plan. If I end up needing more I'll save half.

I am honestly curious how much R&D went into 3D Touch alone. Jonny Ives said many years. They did this and kept cost of iPhone the same. Parts have to be more expensive so I wasn't surprised at all that the display replacement went up.

This is just me looking at things logically and not emotionally.

Flame on!
You don't realize that they already make a higher profit on S years because they already have the physical manufacturing largely figured out.

The cost to go from 16GB to 32GB is LITERALLY a matter of pennies. For a phone that they make hundreds of dollars of profit on, there's simply no excuse to completely gimp the "premium" phone with such a measly amount of storage.

What is the point of even having a 4K camera if you can barely shoot any video with it?

Apple has always been cheap with storage but this year is especially bad. This decision is the greediest decision I've ever seen them make.

Server hard drive capacity had also greatly increased the past few years, so the cost of offering storage has gone down on a per-user basis. But do they increase the amount of free iCloud storage? Nope. Yet again for a fifth year running they skimp out. I'm done with Apple, and I was an original iPhone user so this pisses me off that their greed has ruined such an otherwise amazing phone. I'm simply not paying $100 extra for something that most other manufacturers are offering at even lower price points, especially now that Apple's advantage in hardware/software has almost completely eroded.

Let's just say I work for a company, let's call it a"Mapple", and I literally deal with international customers every single day. Heck, many from Australia even. And 90 day support applies all across all channels. Support is a benefit, not legally required by any law. So if you try to chat in outside your 90 days, there is a great chance you'll be told that you need to pay for support.

LOL - Consumer Law enables free support outside the 90 days and no cost as they system / device will be displayed with "CL" and be green internally. I know this better than anyone else - that's all I'm saying.

Wow Apple is being greedy, these prices are ridiculous. Overpriced ipad, overpriced stylus, overpriced Apple TV, and now overpriced AppleCare smh

Agree with the AppleCare and the Pencil. It's pretty clear to me based on Apple's actions after Steve's death that iOS devices that aren't the iPhone have low margins (by Apple standards, anyway). It took them forever to update the iPod Touch, the iPad Mini 3 didn't get a processor boost, and now the iPad Air 2 isn't going to get an upgrade for over a year... I think the iPad Pro is a way of increasing the profit margins on the products, both by starting it at $800 and possibly using it to distract people from a price hike in the other iPads (I can see it now: iPad Air 3, top of the line processor, best performance ever, better battery life, 64 GB... $700).

Don't think the Apple TV is overpriced, however. Given that the original was $300 and did 1/10 of the stuff the new one does.

Another fail. Increased Applecare+ cost, 16GB iPhone, 5GB free iCloud space, Reduced battery size.

We already know the smaller battery has the same life as the previous battery. Yes such a "fail", (people still use that term?) that Apple will sell millions of these. I mean who cares about force touch, much faster overall, much better camera, housing etc, etc. Heh.

The iPad Pro is certainly in line with the Surface and I would much rather have the iPad Pro.
Price styli that do the same thing as Apple Pencil not that any of them will do it as well. $99 is normal or actually good.
Oh my $149 for a device that does everything Apple TV does?
Apple care + has come in very handy for me multiple times with iPhones but yeah this is the third price raise. I'll still get it though. I don't trust any of the third party warranties and I can't use them to talk into an apple store and walk out with a replacement phone or replace a phone with accidental damage.

Fourth? If you count the launch time storage, this will be the 7th year with 16GB base storage. Those 8GB versions of earlier phones were introduced only later on when they fell to lower price points. 3GS was introduced with 16/32 storage and we haven't seen a base storage increase ever since.

16 is silly. if they atarted with 32 a whole lot of people would not go beyond that which they know. Going from 16 to 64 for $100 is hard to pass up.

Value is decreasing at those prices. $130 safety net is a little steep, especially when it comes with a $99 replacement fee. $230 for a replacement phone is not a good insurance policy value. It would make more sense to price the coverage at $79 and charge $129 or $149 for each replacement.

Some level of greed on Apple's part, for sure, but it's also because of all those people constantly breaking their phones. I just don't understand how this happens. I'm not particularly careful with my devices, but with the standard Apple cases I've never had a cracked screen or bent case. We still have every model of iPhone and they all work great. 4 are in use right now: a 6 Plus, 6, 5s and 5. The two 5's are used by our young kids, who have had hand-me-down devices since they were 2 years old. Never one break of any kind.

Yet around me in the office nearly 1/3 of my co-workers have broken phones (and it bothers me when they just casually say "AppleCare will buy me a new one!").

If I had to venture a guess I would say all the new features this year like the 3d screens and new aluminum are putting a hefty dent in their normal profit margins. The replacement itself isn't a great deal, but your forgetting the value of the extended warranty and phone support.

That is a great point, Apple has gone from buying off the shelf processors, case metal and screen glass to designing their own or giving the manufacturer Apple-specific specs and that doesn't come cheap. Arguably the metal and glass could be cheaper if thinker but that would interfere with Apple's allure. (I for one would even pay more for a thicker "Pro" phone that my wife couldn't break or drown but that is not in the cards.)

What I find annoying about AppleCare is that I just realized I used it TWICE to replace my wife's broken screen so now it's not valid anymore (only two uses allowed). $100+$80+80=$260 cost. Or I could NOT have gotten AppleCare and paid $110+$110=$220.

I think AppleCare is getting to be too pricey at this point, but then again, I take care of my phones and don't get warranties at all. Regardless, it's a much better deal than anything the carriers offer, and I work at T-Mobile. If you end up using the warranty, it's pretty much guaranteed you've saved yourself money, and you aren't getting a refurbished piece of junk.

Please, don't kid yourself...Apple has the largest margin on their products in the whole industry (by far) and especialy on the iphone...
So lets put this into perspective...price of the product is the same but the extended warranty for the same product gets a price hike of 30% (50% in Europe!!!). So the value of said warranty just massively decreased!
