Apple Increasing Focus on Augmented Reality Eyewear, Any Launch Still Over a Year Away

Sounds a lot like the made-up stories about the Apple Car, the Apple smart television, the Apple fridge and the Apple everything else.

No doubt the R&D department has tons of projects going on, most of which will not end up on the market. Let's just leave it at that.

You forget the Reality Distortion Projector (TM), which is a kind or AR project making everything looks great.

(likely also very usuable for an unnamed individual living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington)

I don't know if the world is quite ready for smart glasses culturally, but if anyone can do it, it's Apple. These are the things they're good at: fashion and ridiculous low-power miniaturization.

When exactly did consumer products become "consumer facing" products? Around the same time prices became "price points," I guess.

I guess I could jump on the bandwagon and say "why don't Apple stay focused on Mac's, tablets and phones" but looking forward, perhaps the focus will one day be more on the peripherals rather than on the computing hardware?
Watches and glasses seem to be becoming the interface for our computers.
Can we predict that one day the iPhone will become a piece of hardware that is kept in our pockets while glasses become the main interface? We're seeing that already with the Apple Watch as a peripheral interface. With AR glasses you can have a massive virtual screen in front of you with I guess a virtual touch screen.
As technology continues to advance we can only perceive that the possibilities are endless and that what seems impossible or impractical or unworkable now will become a possibility and an actuality in the near future.

Let's see what Apple come up with. I would be happy to test out their prototype(s). :D

For those that already wear glasses, I'm sure Apple would have to ensure that there are prescription options available.

True, but what fun would that be?

Pretty weak report. Basically AR is the next big thing and everyone is working on it.

Boy, you know Apple is out of ideas when they're rummaging around in Google's trash bin for their next big product.
So Hololens is Microsoft rummaging around in Google's trash bin?

Tim Cook even admitted that smart eye ware was extremely hard to pull off and not something that would appeal to the mass market.
Apples pricing along with consumer tastes/attitudes will result in disappointing sales for them. It could possibly work if it's truly 'magical' but otherwise it'll be a niche product.

I Really really wish apple would offer a platform to build your own computer with. Like an apple box that can run MacOS but you can swap out any hardware you like and upgrade. Going into AR or VR at this point with not a single Mac that can run graphics needed for proper implementation seems like madness. If apple is going for a standalone unit it'll be so underpowered there won't be a point, you might as well use your iPhone in a google cardboard type scenario.

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking apple is barking up the wrong tree recently. I hate to mention Steve Jobs but he put together projects that really had legs right from the Apple I he saw business opportunities and avenues that had potential. It seems like Tim and Apple currently can only follow down routes others try first, unfortunately I don't think any amount of apple halo effect will now sell products that don't offer true value. Most hardcore Mac fans are disappointed by the company direction both current products are buggier than ever and new ones obviously DOA.

We love the Mac.™ Great desktops in the pipeline.™

Well the MacBook Pro doesn't sell as well as Apple hoped too. First make it $ 500,- more expensive and after a month shave $ 200,- from the price and call it a bargain . But then again tablets are the future, according to Cook. For a future product they take their time to come up with something new....

First a stylus that is only working with the pro, then they ad a new cover with keyboard and then... oh wait... isn't that a laptop with touchscreen? Too bad it doesn't have a proper filemanagement and the apps are growing in time to more than 1 GB each (even bigger than professional programs on Mac).

Hololens is a cute niche. It will definitely have its applications, but it's not going to be the next big thing.

More hats for your iPhone! The problem is people can't believe Apple makes mistakes. Just because we never got an Apple TV set or solid information about an Apple car people now dismiss those stories as untrue. I believe it's the opposite, Apple pours millions (billions?) into these projects thinking they're great ideas and when the reality sets in they had a bad idea they walk away from it never to speak of it again. Only Apple is big enough to balls things up then quietly go about business as usual. If this glasses project goes south the software will be reused for an upcoming iPhone and people will say this story was untrue.

I think it'll depend on how much value it adds to the "experience" the user is getting - much of which will have to be thought out.

However Pokemon GO was a show piece (with its admittedly low amount of AR) that this is an area with huge potential in the future. Getting a smart HUD wherever you're looking and visually adding other things people choose (Apple Maps, Calender Alerts, Notes, live coupons as you walk through a store looking at the particular items...) - this will be done and be huge. I'd definitely want Apple in this so its not all up to data mining companies (Google, Microsoft etc.). JMHO...

1990s Sending letters is so cumbersome... email is so great!
2000s Sending emails from computers is so old... let's send text messages on mobile phones!
2010s Sending texts from phones is so cumbersome and old... I want to do it from my watch!
2020s Chuh, raising my arm is so cumbersome and old. Let's see them on glasses that we wear all the time!
2030s You know, all this outside world is so old and cumbersome. Let's live in the Matrix and have computers take care of the physical stuff, and just *think* our lives.
2040s Actually this Matrix thing is lame. Let's go back to the real world and send letters in the post and chill out about the whole thing.
2050s Oh dear, the Planet is beyond repair, we are all going to die horribly. We got our priorities so, so wrong. And Apple still haven't released that new Mac Pro they said was in the pipeline. I do like the new Apple toilet seat warmer though, I never even thought I would need it but it's so beautifully designed, and that range of luxury covers for the toilet seat warmer are nice too.

This might be cool. Map directions might be cool, but could be very distracting.

Gaming would be interesting, although people would look weird interacting with stuff that's not there.
