i'm actually surprised that the EU hadn't come up with a resolution yet that all portable electronic devices are required to have EASILY replaceable batteries that won't require the user to do more than just move a slider to unlatch the battery, or remove 4 screws at worst without having to disassemble the whole unit in delicate ways

It's no longer possible on modern phones.

In Sweden, currently it costs around $81 to change iPhone 12PM battery. So, it's gonna cost at least $100 in the future. My battery went down to 91% in just one year of careful charging. After a year of careless charging, it is at 90% (around 800 cycles) now. My AC+ ends in about 2 weeks. So, within a couple of months, there's a chance that my battery health can go down below 80% and I may have to pay 100 bucks to change it.

I just checked out iFixit's website to see what it would take to replace the battery in my 2020 SE2.
The kit with all the necessary tools is $30. The cost for just the battery is $25. The guide describing the procedure is just 66 simple steps, I mean, what could go wrong? Estimated time required: 30 minutes to 2 hours.

I'll pay Apple the extra $40, that way, if they ruin the phone, they'll have to replace it, not me.

Keeping with the the inflation, lol. That's more than where i live. They did the math with Turkey's inflation rate for those 20 bucks?

They pretty much replace your Apple Watch at this point, rather than swap out the battery. That’s what Apple did with mine when the battery health dropped below 80%, and I got a new casing as well. Which was a nice bonus considering my watch was quite chipped at that time.
Yeah, but at this point I'm definitely holding out for Series 9. I've already made it through three models with basically the same chip as the S6 in mine :) So in that sense (in addition to temperature tracking/"extreme" outdoorsy features largely being irrelevant to me personally) it really has been a great buy. I think I will quite easily make it to (mid-)September :)

And if there isn't a true CPU bump until series 10/X, I will probably just wait for that and get the current watch's battery replaced if need be.

Do you still get a replacement iPad when getting a battery replacement? My iPad Pro is coming four years old and the battery is down to 80% so should be eligible for replacement in a few weeks when it hits 79%. It would be good to be able to get it for £99 and not £129 although to put this in perspective, my wife and I took our two daughters and four grandsons for a casual pizza meal just before Christmas and the cost was £126 before tip.

And it's so great that they charge you extra money to make the repair yourself!
Right. Didn’t give an opinion on whatever the pricing is just letting the individual know it existed.
Personally after poor experience using knockoff Amazon seller batteries in the early days of Android I opt to pay extra to have device branded batteries. Apple is likely overcharging which is unfortunate but I’ll take the peace of mind.

Exactly. It’s relatively cheap compared to the price of the phone. I can’t see any scenario where I’d want to save $40 and replace the battery myself. It’s nice that it’s available, but just not for me.

Price increased justify apple has to pass the increase cost on to us customers . With the record breaking sales on apple devices Year after year shows people don’t have a problem paying for there products and services.

4 out of the top 5 countries that recycle the most are in the EU and the 5th, while not in the EU, is in Europe. All of those countries recycle over half of their produced waste.
Just because your experience of people you know in your country do not recycle does not mean it applies everywhere.
Well, a lot depends on who you cite - I've seen everything from your numbers to only Germany is in top 5.

Even so, portable battery recycling in the EU is around 50%, with Germany at 50% in 2019; even with easy drop-off points. As I said, just because it is mandatory not everyone will do it, even in Germany. Considering Germany has a much larger number of sales, their % is more significant, in terms of waste streams, than others at 70%.

Happy New Years from Apple everyone! They're ringing in the new year with extra greed!!!

Gross.

Friendly reminder to those who have AppleCare+. Use your battery up. Get the whole device replaced if you
can. If they won't let you, consider "accidentally" dropping your device into a lake so you can. You're paying for AppleCare+, get your money's worth (and then some) because Apple would most certainly screw you if the roles were reversed.

Pro Tip: If you can, get your devices(/check that your devices are not already) insured for both defects and accidental damage through something like a credit card, homeowners insurance etc.

Ugh. I'm especially annoyed after they announced they would be letting users sign up for AppleCare until the end of their limited warranty (with a physical device check up) only to pull back on that promise in most territories and return to limiting it to 30 or 60 days.

Yeah, they will replace it with a water damaged, passed the turn on test, scratched up refurb. Apple aren't saints with replacements.

I’ve asked several dudes at the genus bar and I haven’t gotten a precise answer except for this

-if your battery is red , you get a free replacement with ac+ or during the first year

-If your battery isn’t red , whatever the **** that means and something on which you have no visibility I presume, then you’re in for a paid replacement

So yeah, I’m not sure about that 80% 1000 cycles thing , at least in eu (France )

I think some people are forgetting the reality. Majority of 3rd party places charge $100+ for iPhone battery replacement service, while not providing any meaningful warranty, breaking the waterproofing seals and using a questionable battery to begin with. Getting battery replaced for either $49 to $69 (depending on the iPhone) and having the warranty for the battery and assurance that the phone is resealed is a great deal. Even if Apple prices go up by $20, the overall pricing will still be cheaper than 3rd party places.
Exactly this. If Apple was gouging so much, everyone else’s would be $25 replacement. Labor, rent, tools, etc cost money. Apple’s charges are at the bottom of average battery replacement cost quotes, with a warranty

The coffee beans and milk for a Cappuccino costs a fraction of the cost in euros or dollars. Are we being gouged there? If you can buy beer at a store for a tenth of what it costs in a bar, why do people drink there?

Does anyone from Macrumors ever get out of the pajamas and go out into the real world?

If you don't have any clue of estimating costs, just dont spread BS. Battery cost them less than $10 and labor/overhead costs def don't worth $140
It's the labor, shipping and overhead cost that are costly. But if you claim to know better, please provide the numbers instead of throwing rocks out of glass house.

I had to select "6" in order to see the "6s" model.

On the 6s do they replace the battery or the whole phone? My battery is pretty weak and the power button is getting flaky. If I could refresh everything for $65 (CDN), I should book an appointment before March.

Which of course would mean no more water resistance in exchange for a feature few would use.
To be fair: the Galaxy S5 had a replacable/swapable battery with full IP67 certification for water and dust resistance.

This will make less people change their batteries and push more people towards buying new phones.

Great for Apple, bad for the environment. So much for their “we care about the planet” bs.
How do you reach that conclusion? Price of a iPhone battery not under warranty rises from $70 to $90 and you think that will effect how many change their battery versus buy a new iPhone for at least $1000 if not $1400 (maxed out)? No one is "pushing" anyone. If you need a new battery and don't want to buy a new phone, buy the battery. In the last two years a lot of things have risen in price significantly, especially commodities, metal, minerals, etc. Is there a reason batteries should not have gone up too? I don't think your conclusion is supported at all.

OMT, a phone has to have a battery, right? And whether you do a battery replacement or get a new phone it still has to have a battery. So it is plus one new battery and one old battery no matter which option you choose.

Apple has shown great deal more of an environmental awareness and action than most other large companies. Look at every other product you own and use in your home, office, a gym, a grocery store, home center, etc. and tell me whoever made most of them, grew them, etc. is doing more than Apple with respect to the environment. Some are, but not even close to most. It is not Apple's job to save the world and calling bs on them because they are not meeting your expectations doesn't have credibility.

Sigh i think im switching to a $200 android phone.
Spend $200 today to avoid spending $20 more potentially years from now?
exactly what i'm doing. As lang as the 12 Pro works i'll be rocking it and if it doesn't i'm not bothered to by an older gen Phone with new battery
🤔 You’d buy a new, older model rather than pay a fee to replace the battery your more recent model?

How old of an iPhone would you have to buy to save money this way?

I really hope this is sarcasm.
