I have an iPhone 4s. After updating to iOS 7 my sleep/wake button stopped working intermittently. Guess no recall for the old stuff. Come on iPhone 6......

So it is software problem or hardware? if its hardware i dont get it that you are required to update iOS7

have you tried to contact Apple? Most likely they will fix it without any issues.

It's out of warranty. If it starts to get wonkier I may try. I'm not keeping the phone once the iPhone 6 hits so it just needs to last 5 more months.

That sucks. I brought mine in a few months back for this same issue, they immediately said, yup your sleep/wake button is bad. They were gone a minute and came back with a brand new iPhone! I was really happy about that, one of the things I love about apple. It sucks that you have to send your phone in now to a repair center, but I guess what do you expect its out of warranty. However it is clearly a manufacturing defect, so it would be generous if apple would just replace the phone.

It is possible that it is both. March 2013, mentioned on Apple's site, is when 6.1.3 was released, which was the last "general" iOS release in 6.x tree. Could be a pure coincidence though.

I just had mines replaced today. Not for this issue but for home button issue. as well as other issues with my iPhone 5. Glad they replaced it before this announcement came out.

One of my friends' iPhone 5 did exactly this.

What I need for myself though is a new Lightning Port. After plugging it in, I now have to pull the plug sideways for my iPhone to charge...

And now I can't update to iOS 7.1.1 without doing a lot of cleanup on my 64 GB because even though the update is 18 MB, I need 930 MB free to update OTA. If I do it via iTunes, it "proposes" me to put all my purchases on my iPhone, which would take an additional 3GB that I don't have, and I don't have a button to refuse the proposal and just skip to updating iOS.

I wouldn't mind if the Q/A department did a better job, both on software and hardware side.

how about my 4s Power buttom which broke at about 1 3 months. And then I had to pay to get it replaced by some third-party repair shop.

Glad to see Apple is doing the right thing here, but why that little caveat about upgrading to iOS7?
Is there any technical reason why that sleep/wake button replacement would preclude those users still running or preferring iOS6, from enjoying their chosen OS?

Btw, I'm not one of those, but that upgrade requirement seems rather insistent towards those who do.

I had many a problem with my iPhone 5 and it's buttons! Lock button, home button and volume down button have all broken on separate devices, all replaced (in warranty).

The latest replacement (donated to my dad) has had no such issues, and i've had no problems at all with my 5s. Good to see that Apple are recognising that there must have been a problem with the early 5's

About a month ago my iphone 5 starting showing this issue.
I went to a local apple store and they "genius" completely ignored me and asked me to pay £200 for a replacement, as it was 6 months out of warranty.

A rant-email to Tim Cook and a few calls later, they agreed to replace it out of warranty.

I'm happy to see that my email to Apple might have contributed to this outcome. It's not often that we see such a public recall.

Hmm, those in the UK/EU (and maybe other countries too) have a longer statutory warranty period than in the US. With Apple acknowledging that this is a manufacturing defect, what is to stop those eligible for a replacement under this program from showing up at an Apple store and claiming under statutory warranty's terms?

I had to get my wife's phone replaced and I had to fight pretty hard to get Apple to pay for it and not charge me the full price. I feel vindicated and it feels good.

After being told this repair was out of warranty and that Apple didn't do button repairs in Apple Stores, my only "official" option was to replace my whole phone with a refurb unit for ~$250.

That seemed really excessive just to replace one component (flex cable) that's dirt cheap.

I went to an unofficial Apple repair shop to get it fixed for $70.

I wonder if Apple will accept refunding this. I doubt it which kind of pisses me off :/.

I'll still give it a shot given that it says "If you believe you have paid for a replacement due to this issue, contact Apple regarding a refund." without mentioning authorized repairs specifically.

I'm not holding my breath though given that Apple can't keep track of all unofficial repair shops and it would be way too easy to fake a repair receipt to fraud this refund system.

My wife's phone sometimes takes a few presses before it will sleep. I had assumed the problem is the case (an Otterbox Defender), but maybe she has the problem Apple is describing. I'll check the serial number when I get home.

That's how mine started. It has only gotten worse. Get it repaired if you qualify.

Serial not eligible

Strange. I had my iPhone replaced 7 months ago because of the power button issue. Apple's website says the serial number for my original 5 is eligible for this program, but the serial for my replacement phone is not. Obviously I no longer have the original phone. So what if the replacement phone power button fails?

My lock button has gotten quite "mushy" over the past several months. It no longer has that tactile "click" sometimes I barely touch it and it engages, other times I have to press on it pretty hard. I have Apple Care on this phone as well. I'd rather pay the $50 deductible and get a new unit personally, but I'm not sure if that's an option.

WHY O WHY do you have to erase all data? I don't get it. Just replace my button and give it back.

Probably because Apple doesn't want to be responsible for any private information on your phone that may end up not being as private as you'd have liked.

So I checked, and my boyfriend's T-Mobile model from September is ineligible. My Verizon model is, and I have until January. Time to decide when I can be without a phone or dealing with a loaner.
