I had to have my 4S replaced twice and my MacBook Pro repaired. Not loving Apple's quality standards...

The sleep/wake button has been faulty on iPhones since the iPhone 4. I'm surprised this is still an issue.

Darn it have to give up jailbreak for repairs...I'll just wait for the month before the repair offer expires...unless a new jailbreak is released.

Strange. I had my iPhone replaced 7 months ago because of the power button issue. Apple's website says the serial number for my original 5 is eligible for this program, but the serial for my replacement phone is not. Obviously I no longer have the original phone. So what if the replacement phone power button fails?
The linked Apple's web site about this at https://ssl.apple.com/support/iphone5-sleepwakebutton/ mentions "iPhone 5 models manufactured through March 2013 may be affected by this issue." which is probably why the replacement phone doesn't qualify as it's newer than that.

Mine qualifies and I do have this problem, and I figured it was the case all this time.

Oh well I might get it fix when I get the 6 and I pass this phone to my daughter then.

I had this issue about 3 weeks ago, I just went for the £209 replacement phone - stupid but I did it.

Any recourse to get a refund ?

I have the IMEI of the old one but not the serial number.

I'm in the Uk.

Edit:
It turns out I do have the serial number. It would have been eligible. I suppose I now have grounds for a refund of the £209, they never gave me the option of a fix just the £209 purchase.

iPhone 5s

My and my wife's iPhone 5s (not 5) actually have this problem at times too. :( Hopefully they'll extend the replacement to 5s units too.

My serial number is on the list but since I don't have an issue with the button no point of going through the inconvenience of parting with my phone.

Just have to hang in there for the iPhone 6!!

My original iPhone 4's lock button stopped working and Verizon said it was "impossible" to fix. I had insurance so I got a replacement for free. The iPhone 4 came out 3-4 years ago..... Apple is still having this problem?

I still have my replacement iPhone 4 with iOS 6. I am waiting to see what the iPhone 6 is like to see what my next move is. I hate iOS 7 but I don't like the android platform either. I'm tempted to go with the Lumia Icon Windows Phone. The screen is gorgeous but that's all I really like about it. I have Mac computers so I'd like to stick in the same ecosystem but... IDK.

Even though I don't like the look of the app icons in iOS 7 that's not the deal breaker. The deal breaker is how much everything feels "broken" and less user friendly than iOS 6. And iOS 8 looks to be the same as 7 but with the watch and health apps added.

I love Apple. I do. But to me they've stepped backwards with there OS on our beloved iPhones. We need STEVE JOBS back on this earth. He is obviously still needed!!!!!!!!

I have this too and the Genius said it would be a couple hundred to fix because my phone was like two months out of warranty. Glad they're going to be giving us the fix.

I have a friend with an iPhone 5 and he's had this problem for a long time. I sent him this article and the Apple Support page. He checked his serial number and he qualifies, so he'll be sending his in for repair.

And FYI for anyone in Australia, you have more than 2 years if it is a manufacturing fault. And you don't need apple care.

I had this problem 6 weeks after my warranty expired and Apple told me it would cost $269 to fix it. No leeway at all. They insisted that it was not a manufacturing defect and not a widespread issue. So I had to buy the part from iFixit and do the repair myself. I wonder if they'll refund me for that.

ZERO Chance, but why not ask. I wouldn't do it in the store as I tend to find it is hit or miss with someone that actually knows anything or willing to help.

Glad to see Apple do the right thing.

Had my button repaired here :p very cheap and took about half an hour. Phone is still going strong.

Also, did anyone notice that it's almost impossible to crack the iPhone 5's screen from drops? My corners have a lot of dents, and the screen is a bit scuffed, but no cracks.

This program is certainly a downgrade from what Apple's customer service used to be.

In March 2013 when the sleep/wake button on my iPhone 5 stopped working properly (just a few month after I bought it). When I went to an Apple store, they checked the phone and replaced it with a new one right away - I walked out from the store with new functioning phone.

Now you have to spend 4-6 days without your phone while it's being repaired.

So it is software problem or hardware? if its hardware i dont get it that you are required to update iOS7

Because Apple needs to expedite their "record breaking" iOS 7 adaption headlines. So they've lowered themselves to using extortion tactics.

Not that most people aren't already on iOS 7, but it seems rather sleazy to force it on people (who don't want it) when it certainly doesn't seem necessary.

It's possible that they either do not have in-store expertise to repair it there and then or do not have sufficient replacement iPhone 5 units beyond loaners. Or both.

Huh what a coincidence. I got one of the first iphone 5's and I thought it may have been the case I put on it. Took it back to the apple store and they gave me a new phone. Glad though that they finally are able to fix them.

Hi. New member just to tell my experience. I went to an Apple Store with this problem 2 months ago. Button had been faulty for months until it just became unresponsive. Genius Bar said it was my fault, due to wear and tear, and because phone was out of warranty, I could get a replacement 5 for $269 or full price for 5S. I declined and the guy just showed me Accessibility option to bypass the button and I left.

Apple should just either fix the device in-house at their stores or give a new device. It'll take 2 weeks to get this thing sent, fixed, and returned, not to mentioned the inconvenience of preparing and being without your phone, for an issue that is their fault and that they long ignored.

Customer service deteriorating over time at Apple.

I'd say if your phone is eligible, even if the button is working fine now, send it in. It WILL die. My button worked fine for over a year and just started to get flakey at about the 16 month mark. I have 2 years of AppleCare so they just gave me a new one back in February... otherwise I would have probably done a repair myself with the help of MacFixit.

You think Steve would have caught a faulty switch that takes 13-14+ months of constant use before it starts to fail?

For those who thought it was your case, we all know now it was not. My iPhone 5 has never ever been used in a case (100% "naked") and I had the same problem. When I did a google search a couple months ago (before getting my replacement under AppleCare) it sounded like a common issue. And it's usually worse on the right side of the button. Anyway, glad to see Apple finally owning up to this.

2 months ago they replaced my out of warantee i-phone5

First they gave me the run around sending me from store to store and telling me to use the software buttons in the accessibility options, then when I had all but given up one day out of the blue I got a call and they told me they'd send me a new phone provided I send the one with the sleep wake issue back. I knew there was an issue with the button because I took great care of my phone.

For those that are eligible but don't have issues, should the phone still be brought in? I actually have a pile of dust under my camera...I wonder if they would clean it out when they open the phone up.

I'll send mine, won't wait till the problems show up, hopefully they send me a brand new 5s hahaha I think I'm daydreaming
