What about those great customer experiences with no 4k Disney content for the same price as other studios or that great customer experience when Amazon Prime video wasn't supported on AppleTV for years or Netflix not included in the TV app? These are all things that can be avoided or at least assuaged by creating and streaming one's own original content.

Apple's mantra for decades has been the combo of great hardware and software. Original streaming content is no different than great software.

Are you kidding? Content and software are nothing alike. Producing film and television is very expensive and wildly speculative. Content is a potential money pit for Apple. We're talking billions of dollars to produce these shows. Will Apple see a return? Will enough people pay for this content? This is completely different from music where Apple licenses and distributes other people's content. Despite nearly two decades in the music business, Apple still hasn't produced original content in that arena.

I think original content could be a huge stumble for them. They'll be fine, financially, of course. They have billions to burn. But if their programming isn't top notch or, worse, is considered "lame" by all the teens and 20-somethings, it will tarnish the brand. There are huge risks going into original content. One routinely hears about high budget TV shows and films that fail miserably and lose hundreds of millions of dollars. I see original content as more of an ego project at Apple than anything else and worry that it will consume a lot of resources while yielding few appreciable benefits. That said, I imagine Apple's original content will be part of a new video subscription service, the lure to convince subscribers. Will it be enough? And will the service offer enough over Netflix, Hulu, Sling, and other services to convince people to switch or sign up for yet another monthly subscription?

I still have yet to hear about a original show Apple is working on where I say to myself, "I really want to watch that."

The only one that has piqued my interest is the Ronald Moore sci-fi series. I was a big fan of BSG, so I'd give anything from a former BSG writer/producer a shot.

One reason why Apple is getting into the television business is so it can subliminally push Tim Cook's political agenda. Not saying this is the only reason, but I'm sure it is one of them.

Seriously, is Emily Dickenson studied in school these days? Or is it just a passing interest for tween girls like it was in my day?

It will take some highly skilled creative writing to make comedy out of her sad life. Maybe add some hip hop beats.
