Perhaps, but distracted driving is becoming an enormous safety problem. Anything that manufacturers can do to incorporate new ways to poke and prod people into remembering that they have responsibilities while driving seems like a good thing.

There are many more reasons for distracted driving than just cell phone usage. I've seen people eating, reading the paper/magazine/books, shaving, ladies applying makeup, people changing clothes... I guess we need smart food, smart clothes, smart electric razors... there are a lot of eejits out there driving around and doing God-knows-what while behind the wheel.

You can still override it if you are a passenger (https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/30/ios-11-do-not-disturb-while-driving/).

Short of turning off the phone, you can’t legislate common sense. I can now see warnings on fast food:”please don’t eat and drive”; newspapers:”please don’t read and drive; makeup:”please don’t apply while driving “.

All common sense things not to do that can’t be technically controlled.

And yet you are providing the slippery slope argument right here to absolve people of their own responsibility. IMO a bartender should never be held responsible for a drunk driver, the driver is making the bad decisions.
And yet in America this isn't something I'm providing...it's real. I didn't make it up.

Agreed! Hands-free is a first step!

You MUST punish lack of common sense - that is why rules/laws are put in place. I'd like that (cell phone laws) to be implemented in all states and enforced with vigour by the police, instead of the sneaky, quota-based, profiled ticketing practice used now.

hence why I said it is almost in my post and clarified why in a post a few posts down from my jack daniels comment... Bottom line is the distracted driver should be the one being sued, not Apple. We don't sue drug companies cause Billy Bob was on pain pills and xanax and caused a wreck.
I would agree with you but most in this thread are stating that they (comparisons) are the same thing when they are not.

People should consider what they would prefer when a car is coming towards their children, to have the driver texting or not. I hate regulation as much as the next person but if technology could switch of texting for drivers and not passengers. I don't think I would object.

I would also not like the driver to be reading a newspaper, applying makeup, or turning around disciplining the kids in the back seat. All common sense things, for which today the only course is training and common sense. Leave my phone alone, I don’t need or wAnt any “innovations “ on it that make it more difficult to use as a passenger.

I would agree with you on some points.

I read stories and I get fired up too, you can't stop my phone in the car if I'm a driver because that will mean my passengers cant use their phones either (What I initially thought).

But the more I think of it. If and only if a phone can detect you are sitting in the driver seat and the car is moving, then you should not be able to text. The guy who texts and drives is a dick and I would hope you are not that person.

On that front one could add tech to a car to stop it if it catches the driver reading a newspaper or applying makeup. All fine in my book, as long as like you say it doesn't impede MY use of My car.

i.e. I would not want tech in a car that I had to blow in to every time to start the car, but tech that could tell if I was impiared would be ok.

People have decisions they can make, if they make them, the consequence is on them and them alone.

At the same time, there's no reason why technology cannot be leveraged to help avoid there being a consequence in the first place.

Technology is already being used for this purpose, especially in vehicles:
  • Seat belt alarms to urge wearing
  • Backup cameras to avoid killing children
  • Anti-child-choke power window switches
  • Automatic anti-collision braking
  • Lane crossing guidance/alert
  • GPS speeding alert
  • Driver nod-off alert
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Anti-rollover
  • etc.
Americans especially are really big on wanting to always have a choice to be able to do something stupid, but that only works if it just affects that stupid person. When it's your own family on the line, priorities can change.

But drivers can still read the ny times going 70 in the left lane. No technology cure for a lack of common sense.
