In addition, he said there will be system-wide Translate app capabilities on iOS 26. 9to5Mac previously reported that the Messages app would be gaining live translation capabilities, but Gurman said it will extend to the Phone app and other areas of the operating system. A live translation feature is also expected for AirPods.
I can’t wait for the ability to translate between like 6 of the most common languages!

I’ll still be using ChatGPT for anything language even slightly more remote than Polish.

I love every new emoji related article just because it's fun watching so many heads explode. People get so wound up about so little.

A whole community focusing their collective rage at little cartoons...
That’s very simplistic. You have to remember what they demonstrated a year ago that was apparently fiction. Then marketed new iPhones that were supposedly built for that fictitious thing. And now look what they’re (supposedly) about to give us. They deserve the heat.

I'm actually not mad. The AI improved Siri isn't ready. They absolutely should not even talk about it until they have a much more solid grasp on what implementing their new vision of Siri is actually going to look like. With a working demo. They learned their lesson and are being conservative with what they demo that is AI related at WWDC. They have to show something because otherwise the media is going to say, "Apple has given up on AI" and it will be a PR headache.

BUT

For the love of god, this had better not be the focus or even a major segment of the WWDC keynote. I do not want 20 minutes spent on hybrid genmoji mashups. That will be embarrassing.

In recent years I've been as critical as anyone in my comments regarding Apple [seemingly] being in a funk. But I genuinely thought, at the very least, that they would read the room and not make any pathetic attempts to pander to us at WWDC with even more AI gimmicks that no one asked for.

Yes, Apple has the capital resources to rival most nation states and power bordering on the Q Continuum but there's that saying "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time" and they the ones taking the bites, cannibalizing their own company for the sake of short-term trading profits. And now the financial talking heads are getting bored with AAPL and calling out their [relative] stagnation.

Apple, lately, is like Voldemort drinking Unicorns blood just to stay alive long enough to get the Sorcerer's Stone, living a cursed life all the while.

It doesn't require AI to predict the comments for this article.
Including this one (and now mine as well)

Genmoji, Memoji are all gimmicks that most people seem to use at first and then never touch again. I wish Apple wouldn't dedicate so much time and effort on them.

So wait, we have a global climate crisis while AI is using so much energy that all our previous efforts to reduce emissions are out the window, and Apple wants us to use this emerging tech for… Genmoji’s? Talking about priorities.

I agree it's simplistic, but not overly so-- it fits. As you say, you're angry about something else and venting it in the emoji thread. It's not just because of AI delays, people have been railing at every unicode update thread long before AI was a thing worth discussing. Emojis just seem to send people over the edge, it's hilarious.

Apple seems to be putting in a lot of effort for these Genmoji/Animoji etc. Not sure whether they will work well. Waiting to see a demo soon.

Is it emoji that sends people over the edge or is it the fact that with all of the things that could be addressed with their developers time and effort, they constantly choose to focus a chunk of that time and effort on things as trivial and useless as making sure to add to the already huge emoji library or to try and do something with emoji (Anamoji, Genmoji, etc.) that is a huge gimmick that might be fun for about 30 seconds when there are such bigger fish to fry?

For some of us it’s not about emoji or being angry about some other issue like climate change due to AI, it’s about Apple’s constant focus on a trivial feature like emoji and doing gimmicky things with it that most of us don’t bother to use and is, in our view, a huge waste of time in the face of huge issues like Siri not being up to snuff for the last decade.

IMHO it is a bad look right now given the circumstances ….

What you feel is opinion. And since we don't know the management structure of the engineering teams there seems to be an assumption it's either genmoji or AI. While that could be the case, I highly doubt it.

I'm sure there are some also don't care and would rather play around with genmojis, like teens, who are an influential buyer of apple products.

Maybe or maybe not.

Apple's 1+ Billion active and repeat customers will be the final arbiters of the above and Apple's success. I'm guessing the 100 or 200 people who hang out on tech forums taking a shot a Apple will make absolutely no difference regarding if an emoji app is on their iPhone, and ultimately, won't drive Apple's success.

The good news is those people are not required to use the emoji app. Simply don't use it. There's probably a handful of Apple apps/features on my iPhone that I've never used. Life goes on.

It probably never even existed besides as a render.

System wide translation would be great. I love how on android you can just press on the home bar and get an instant translation of whatever is currently shown on your screen without having to copy paste anything
Wow!! That’s insane. Didn’t even realize it was possible on android. It’s especially this copy pasting that’s annoying… we’re having to select text and then click translate. If Apple could simply copy this feature that would be soooo helpful.

I count 7 references to “moji” in your response that it’s not about emoji and only one reference to anything else. Compare the comment count of any thread with “moji” in the headline. People understand at an intellectual level that it’s not an either/or proposition and that any problems Apple has delivering on their preferred features is because of other challenges or failings, but nothing animates people to rage quite like emoji.
