In the latest macOS 15.1, iOS 18.1, and iPadOS 18.1 betas, Apple has introduced a new "Rate Your Experiences" feature in its Feedback Assistant app that lets users rate the generative content served by Apple Intelligence across apps, with the aim of using the feedback to refine and train Apple's generative models.

Apple describes the new feature like so:
Help improve Apple products and services! Content such as your emails from the Mail app and messages from the Messages app will be displayed to you, along with content generated from them for Apple Intelligence features. This data always remains on your device unless you choose to submit it to Apple, after rating your experience.

In the new section, users are asked to "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" recent generated content to indicate their level of satisfaction with the results. If the "experience" shown was not good, users are invited to optionally offer more details for submission to Apple. This can be done by choosing from pre-defined feedback presented as a checkmark list, and by providing additional typed information for context.

In the case of a summarized email in the Mail app, for example, users can choose from the following issues:
  • Hard to understand
  • Missed key detail
  • Incorrect attributions
  • Too long
  • Irrelevant additions
  • Stereotyping or bias
  • Overly suggestive or sexual
  • Vulgar or offensive
  • Other
There are similar pre-set feedback options for other Apple Intelligence features such as Smart reply, Notifications summary, prioritized emails, Image Playground, Writing Tools, and more. The new section also includes a scoring system that lets users level up their score by providing feedback to Apple, although it's not explained what any points earned could be used for.

Apple introduced the first version of Apple Intelligence in the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 developer betas. While the betas include some useful Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools, some of the Apple Intelligence additions won't be coming until later.

Already not impressed. It has highlighted various email messages as important. Problem is they are USPS expected delivery date emails I get frequently and do not really care about most of the time and nothing in the messages indicates they are important. Siri is slightly better but nothing stands out so far.

Good on Apple trying to motivate its users to supply feedback about their AI experiences. Nothing better than having tens of thousands of users offering valuable feedback to make a good system even better.

Sadly, many will complain and do absolutely nothing other than replying on forums with snarky/snappy comebacks. And then later complain about Apple Inteligence not being 100% perfect 100% of the time.

I'll certainly participate.

It's like giving gold stars to kindergarten kids. Cheap, worthless, but effective.

Unless they can be redeemed for something later on?
👍
Very much like the medals I get on my Apple Watch U2 when I apparently do well exercise wise…

If it gave me discounts on my health insurance it would be great.
But a pretty picture of a virtual medal is honestly awfully childish, IMHO. (Though I do realise some people really like them.)

I agree that the highlighted emails are somewhat annoying. All of mine have been Amazon deliveries. I guess AI seems to think deliveries are the most important things to mention. One problem I have is that they sometimes won’t go away even after I’ve gotten rid of the emails, so I’m wondering where it’s getting its data. I suppose it could be a bug.

But can you turn it off after having opted in?
Yes. At the top of the Apple Intelligence and Siri Settings section, there is a toggle to turn AI on and off. Almost all of the features are on-use items anyway, so there isn’t a lot of reason to turn it off. Just don’t use the features. Nothing says you have to have AI clean up your email, for example.

I figure the points you get are equivalent to the badges you get for exercising. You get nice shiny digital badges to look at that don’t mean a thing, just like these points. They’re there for bragging rights. Ooh look, I got 15 bazillion points for commenting about Siri!

Embarrassing much? You can almost feel how rushed Apple is and the Anxiety Tim & Co are exuding. It's pretty clear that Apple is behind the 8 ball and full Apple "intelligence" is headed to Q1 2025. Let's just hope that it meets the deadline of WWDC 2025.
