Most people are gonna never know to toggle it on. After the ios update there is zero notification that one has to enable this "feature".
Exactly, the entire rollout of this is the most un-Apple thing ever. Including the fact it's gonna take 6 months to roll it all out on just a tiny fraction of iPhones that are out there in the world.

While this is an iOS thread, it took nearly 2 hours to be approved to use Apple Intelligence on my M1 Pro MBP with 15.1 (if it helps any with gauging how long it'll take from waitlist til using AI) 🤔

So odd for Apple to not include Apple Intelligence automatically as part of the update. Clearly they want limit the number of people who have access to it
Some of us don’t want anything to do with AI, it is a silly feature that mankind has somehow magically survived so many years on this planet without. Apple did the right thing making apple intelligence an opt-in feature.

I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but I downloaded 18.1 on my iPad Air this morning. I was on the waitlist for several hours. After upgrading my MacBook Air, iPhone and iPad mini to 18.1, I was suddenly approved.

Apple’s intelligence is working flawlessly here in the UK. It took about an hour.

I do not see the Join Waitlist Option when I installed 18.1 and when to the Apple Intelligence. Could this be because I was on the 18.1 Beta before getting the true version today?

45 min and waiting.

It’s ridiculous how it’s been advertised all along from launch with iOS 18.1 and US English and when you finish downloading the software, you have to join a waitlist to use features you’ve been promised

I may have misunderstood your post, but you seem to imply that the requirement to join a waitlist equates to a broken promise. With most employers in the United States, when you get a job, you still have to wait to receive the paycheck you’ve been promised. When dining at most fast food establishments in the US, you pay first and then you have to wait for the food you have been promised. Just because you have to wait doesn’t mean that a promise has been broken. Patience is a virtue.

Yes. If you had Apple Intelligence on the 18.1 beta, you don't need to re-join the waiting list on the final release. You already have Apple Intelligence.

The photo cleanup thing isn't really that well shown either as far as turning it on. Have to open a photo then tap edit and tap cleanup, then it downloads something and becomes active.
i tried it its very rudimentary. If the background around the object is somewhat flat and easy to replicate, it does a decent job... but it cannot for example remove a tree and replace the background.

Good seeing you, miss seeing you at DSLreports (hahaha). Yes, I've seen a couple of other reports that the cleanup is lacking

Can I check how long people were on “preparing” for after being on the waitlist?
Mine was preparing for hours. Apparently I had to leave the AI page open while it downloaded stuff? Then it finally changed to a button I needed to click to enable it.

In the end, mine went from "Joined waitlist" to "Preparing" in 50 mins, then it started downloading whatever it needed to and it was set up in an hour.

Once you do it on one of your devices, it automatically signs you up so I didn't have to join a waitlist when I loaded iPadOS 18.1 to my iPad and it was already downloading the AI files in the background.
