Fantastic iPhone, first time I used/unlocked mine with FaceID and navigated with gestures, it instantly made home button/double clicking home button navigation on other household iPhones feel dated. Still love the ease of iOS navigation & app switching the iPhone X brought in. Tim saying that the X was bringing in Apple’s vision for the next 10 years has born out so far.

The worst “advance” and the last one on an IPhone.
I still sorely miss Touch ID. In my old iPad Pro is fantastic vs the Face ID on my m1 iPad Pro, where it is miss and hit due to weird positions. Faceid does not make my life easier nor is it faster nor safer.
There are tons of real life videos where siblings can unlock their parents phone with Face ID, but none for Touch ID (unless lab situation), how come that is safer in real life?. In the lab, ok, but I real life it is much more unreliable, unsafe and accident causing as I have to move my body and my face towards the phone while driving!. Pure marketing to sell the the idea that Is better because Apple can’t come up with a decent under the screen fingerprint reader (as the Asian phones have done since maybe 4 years ago?). Pathetic Apple.

This was such a huge moment. Definitely the biggest iPhone change since the original iPhone, and dramatically changed the directory for iPhones ever since. I remember how shocking it was to see such an all-screen iPhone when the first few photos of people using them in public leaked.

I remember being in class in a lecture hall, and I could see many people watching the keynote during the class in the rows in front of me on their laptops and iPads, myself included lol. The $999 price was a shocker and joke for months too.

Face ID, a solution in search of a problem, which itself caused an actual problem: the notch. And later, another problem - forcing users to type their passcodes during the pandemic because Face ID didn't work with masks. One step back, two steps back.

The only problem I ever had with my X was battery life, the 12 mini was not much better on that front but the 14 max I’ve ordered will be, just physically huge!

The X was a great design, although it was interesting to service. It was the first iPhone with a two cell battery, plus more component removal to access, and I did the first battery and camera replacements on the X at my company. They were weird repairs since they were rather close to launch, GSX didn't have a lot for the model yet.

Loved this phone. Still the best looking and nicest to hold in the hand. The 5.8 size was just right as well.

Felt better in the hand, gave the impression of being thinner. I really dislike the new square edges that cut into my hands.

The problem it solves - having to consciously tap something during authentication. Here's an example with 1Password - on my MacBook Air, I have to move my finger to the upper right corner to Touch ID unlock the vault. On my iPhone, I just stare at my screen, as I normally do, and the authentication is performed. No extra movement needed.

The notch - you remember all iPhones before that had a forehead and a chin, right?

The pandemic - it's not like in 2017, or in the years prior when it was being developed, anyone knew that everyone is going to have to wear a face mask in 3 years...

Credit where credit’s due. It was a good futuristic design. As I recall, it had the highest screen to body ratio back then. It paved way for other manufacturers to aggressively go towards hole puch and other designs for main lineups. Apple is lagging behind currently and the dynamic island is a promising feature. Can’t wait to see what the design for 20th anniversary edition would be for next decade.
Apple really isnt lagging. There are very manufacturers, if any, that have Face ID so throughly integrated into almost every aspect of their ecosystem.

It was a good phone. I was skeptical but once I got it in my hands I saw it was a good phone. Face ID and swiping navigation were game changers for me.

Apple: "We haven't been able to solve the notch problem for five years, so it's a feature now."
Also Apple: "When we do solve it in a couple years, we're going to bury the fact that 'dynamic island' ever existed in the first place."

This was my favourite iPhone. It really was a step up and felt like a game changer compared to previous home button design. Really had that wow factor that I only ever felt with the original iPhone and iPhone 4. It set a precedent for the current range of iPhones after 10 years. Hopefully we see something crazy again at 20.

I think FaceID, especially the way it was implemented with such robust security features was a gamechanger. And even better was when Apple Watch was allowed to unlock (partially) a phone when the user has masks on.
