Apple will today introduce an Apple Music student plan that discounts the streaming service by 50 percent for those who are enrolled in an eligible college or university (via TechCrunch).

The new plan means any academic student in the United States can now pick up an individual Apple Music membership for $4.99 a month, rather than pay the standard $9.99 subscription rate.

U.S. students won't be the only ones to benefit though, as the plan is also open to students in the U.K., Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The actual cost is expected to vary slightly from country to country, but all markets will see 50 percent off the standard subscription rate.

The student discount is offered for up to four continuous or non-continuous years after sign-up, so students are able to take gap years or breaks between semesters and still sign up again when they return to study. Additionally, the plan is open to all students of all ages, regardless of degree.

The membership tier will be available starting today to both new and existing subscribers. Students can sign up or change their membership online, or go through the Apple Music mobile app. Apple is using student verification technology provider, UNiDAY, to ensure that those who are signing up as students are actually enrolled at a supported institution.

News of the student plan comes two days after it was reported that Apple is planning to overhaul its year-old music streaming service to make it more intuitive. The company is set to redesign the user interface, which will be "bolder, yet simpler", with an emphasis on black and white backgrounds and text as well as more of a focus on album art.

Additionally, the "New" tab in Apple Music is being replaced with a "Browse" option with better organizational tools for finding new content, and Apple will encourage users to use a simplified "For You" section. The new Apple Music app will reportedly debut at WWDC in iOS 10 and will be introduced through an iTunes update on the Mac.

Spotify already has a student discount and has had one for awhile.
Yeah great for those in the US.

The real question is apple why the **** didn't you introduce this at the start???

Edit: Just realised my normal monthly renewal charged my card on the 2 of May...

Perhaps they had to clear it with the record labels that they have agreements with? After all, this probably means that they are going to get half the money from a college subscriber. Or perhaps they had things to work out with their student verification provider?

To me, this seems like a smart move for Apple. I thought the AM sub price of $10 a month forever was high for the average user when there are so many difference cheaper and free options.

For many of us, it would be cheaper to own the music we want than to spend money to rent it.

Also, with all the launch problems with Apple Music, sometimes affecting people that did not even sign up for it, having a cheaper option for students might attract some people that were scared away to even try it.

The only free streaming option I can think of is Spotify's free tier. If you want to stream music, there aren't that many options that are cheaper than Apple either, if any. Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play Music, etc. all charge $10 a month.

If you buy your music to own it, at $10 a month, that's what? One album? Whereas with a streaming service you can listen to hundreds, if not thousands of songs. So, I'm not sure that I agree with your assessment.

how do I sign up? Halp. I'm already a subscriber I don't see the student option anywhere.

I graduated from University in 2012 and Spotify had a student discount even back then.
Why does it always have to be a race of who did it first?? They implemented it now, people should be happy to have an option.....of course the grumpy one are gonna complain anyway..

Spotify does make money just with that, so I assume they offered as much as possible, to Apple this is just "another business" it is not like if Apple Music fail they have to close down, so of course Spotify has to do something "better / more".

In 2012 Apple did not even have the service, so your point is? They started last year, they are improving this year...... let's see spotify in 5-10 years....

The good news is, you can still chose to use Spotify if that suits your needs, it's the great thing about choices, "bashing" the competition (no matter where it comes from) won't make Spotify either worse or better.!!!
