If the top areas at the front are touch-sensitive, how are you supposed to hold it?

i'd say it's more pressure sensitive than touch sensitive. i'm assuming you still have to click down just as hard to get a click to happen. i don't think they expect everyone to push the mouse around by its butt.

Tap sensitive buttons....eh. I find myself tapping the top buttons on my mouse all the time which would probably result in accidental clicks. I certainly like the 360º scroll, but other than that I'm not that interested. I'd like to try one to see what it's like though. Who knows, maybe I'd love it.

No Bluetooth

I'm really sad that there's no Bluetooth version but I know why. The regular wired mouse doesn't really fill the "shell" at all, so its easy to put in extra equipment (touch sensor, impact sensor, scroll ball). The Bluetooth mouse already has a battery and transmitter, so there's no room left. They'll need to shrink the battery/transmitter or expand the mouse to fit both inside.

It's about damned time!

And while they are at it, how about adding a different setup on their overpriced laptops as well. As for me I'll stick with my < than $20.00 Logitech two-button mouse with scroll wheel.

P.S. It just occurred to me...Apple has finally issued a mouse with more than one button. Surely the Apocalypse is nigh!

I couldn't believe it - Apple releasing a multi buttoned mouse!!!

It looks good. Shame its not BT wireless yet, but i'm sure thats coming. I would dump my bt logitech mouse tomorrow if they introduced a BT version.

I've always liked the design of the Apple mouse - but at one mouse button - no chance.

I like the vertical / horizontal scrolling feature - but the middle mouse button - looks like it could be awkward to use to scroll around in any direction?
Looking at the web page - is the entire front section touch sensitive to scroll around or do you use the directional middle 'button'?
( I hope it is touch sensitive top portion ).

I'll be getting one, but I'm still undecided on whether I prefer the look of this mouse versus the more transparent plastic look of the standard.

Hmmm... I'm glad that Apple finally got round to creating a multi-button mouse but I think I'm not sure I'll like not actually having a 'click' when I 'click'.

I like the "idea" of touch sensitivity and that apple finally released a multi button mouse, however i dislike the cord. It just seems so retro regardless of the new features. I was a little bitter being that I just bought a Logitech MX1000, and then i saw it was a wired mouse for $49!!

I think the big thing here is the scroll ball. This is basically adding two mice in one! So instead of having to scroll up and left I just roll the mouse and get both decorations at the same time.

Something about seeing a mouse as apple's main page product strikes me as odd...

great job apple, but whoa, it's not a G5 powerbook

bout time! This was only 10 years over due. As for Blue Tooth I would assume that's in the works and they mearly wanted to get this version out the door for the back to school purchases and such so apple sales reps never again have to say 'well it's only a one button mouse, but you can buy any mouse you want"

Great design yet same simplicity

NO, it's NOT a multi-button mouse..it's still a one-button mouse (as it always should be) with multi-button functionality; Apple is still faithful to its design principles.

Apple, again, reinvents a better wheel and presents us with the best mouse of the world; HI guidelines are still complied with and we get the best of all worlds...one-button simplicity, multi-button functions.

also:

"A tiny speaker inside Mighty Mouse produces button-clicking and Scroll Ball-rolling sound effects."

Whoa
Whoa
Whoa
Whoa
Whoa
My mouse just squeaked.

Actually having looked into it more it does seem to click but it won't 'click' if you're already 'clicking' with the left or right hand side already. Then it wouldn't audibly 'click' but would hopefully virtually 'click'. I wonder if that'll be ok in computer games where one needs to 'click' with both buttons all the time and one often has to 'click' them at the same time.

'click' 'click'

'click'

Someone mentioned Mighty Mouse being the least Apple sounding name ever. Perhaps this is part of Apples attempt to attract new users -- people already considering the mac because they like their iPod so much.

If you think about it this makes a lot of sense. A multi-button mouse they'll be accustomed too and a name which would fall in line with more PC products.

Looks cool!! Can't wait to try it. I'm impressed by it's simple looks in spite of it's "full featured" functionality. Of course, I expect this from Apple but "the proof is in the pudding" so I'll have to see how it feels in actual use.

That could become really annoying if you just want to scroll up and down like when browsing the web

Here's How It Works

Okay, to end all confusion in this thread, I'll explain how the Mighty Mouse works:

  • It has touch sensors under the shell for detecting what part of the mosue you click with. However, it is NOT touch sensitive in the sense that if you don't push down, it registers a click.
  • You can turn "Two-button mode" on or off in System Preferences
  • It has a scroll ball that can scroll in any direction.
  • Its side buttons can be set up to activate Expose, Dashboard, Spotlight, or the application switcher
  • It is WIRED ONLY and costs $49

Hmm:

Button: ii) a small disk fitted in an electrical appliance or attached to a surface that activates an electrical connection when pressed vii) activating part of computer mouse: the part of a computer mouse that when pressed or clicked performs a function, for example, inserting the cursor at a specific point.
