What about a volume up/down? CD eject? Tv tuner buttons? Let's just throw everything on the mouse and we'll end up with a 100-button mouse and no need for a keyboard. Yay!

Yes indeed, why have a mouse and a keyboard? I think you're onto something there... ;)

Got the last one..

I just got back from my local Apple store (it's lunch time here), there was a line with about 5 business suits at the checkout all with one new mouse each, there was a line about 7 deep waiting at the only computer that had a new mouse to play with... so naturally I went straight to the shelf... where I grabbed the last one. When I asked if they had any more I was told that they put all that they had on the shelf, and that they only had about 15 to begin with. Before I checked out I got to see each of the "must test first crowd" get rejected when they found out there were no more left, and still more came in looking for the mouse. The guy in front of me commented that he saw me go straight to the shelf and he had done the same thing. No one commented on if there was a one to a customer thing, but everyone seemed to just have one.

I haven't read through this entire thread, so I don't know if others have posted their thoughts, but here's mine.

The scroll "wheel" is a small ball, smaller than a pea, it works well but I wonder what it will be like when it gets dirty. It's a little twitchy, but I haven't really played with any setting yet.
The side buttons are mapped as one button "button four" in dashboard and expose preferences. The side buttons are well done and don't seem like they would be prone to accidental clicking
The top two buttons work great and do everything a standard two button mouse would do.

Is it worth it? Yes.

The mouse guages pressure; if you aren't pressing, then it won't see that finger as "clicking".

I had hoped that was true, but it seems that it's not. Apparently, you must lift your left finger OFF the mouse or you can't right-click. You CAN left-click without removing your right finger though: all clicks are assumed to be left-clicks unless you have ONLY your right finger touching the mouse.

So no distinction between "resting" on the mouse and "pressing"--not in terms of left vs. right. Too bad--I'd like to see that improved.

EDIT: Further confirmation of this (for some people) problem. Try BEFORE you buy! This will bother some people--myself included. I don't want to learn new habits for right-clicking.

Also, it seems that clicking the ball rocks the whole shell down just like primary clicking does. I don't have an opinion on that either way, just thought it was interesting. (And it makes sense: if you could click JUST the ball down, you'd probably end up pressing the shell anyway.)

Ha ha, very funny. What's with these stupid mice these days with a dozen buttons, anyways? Newsflash: You don't need a back/forward button on your mouse. That's what the button ON THE WEB BROWSER IS FOR.

Forgot to include the display on it too. :)

First Apple goes to Intel, and now a multi-button mouse. This is it. It's the end, and I'm not even ready...

Anyway, doesn't this announcement seem random to anybody? I mean it's all by itself, not connected to any other product. Just seems wierd to me.

Regards,
Gus

I'm glad apple has got with the times, 2 button mouse support is built into the Mac OSX from the word go, its about time! I use an apple 1 button mouse, and am happy, but they should have bought this out ages ago, I know that windows users associate apple with a one button mouse, so hopefully this will make them think hard next time they buy a new computer? With all this windows Vista rubbish!

Great story, and thanks for the review! I think I'll wait until the BT version is released - not to buy the BT version mind you, but because then this corded version will probably drop in price. :p ;)

Seriously, kudos to Apple for making us get all excited over, well, a mouse.

OK back... Openning package..... OOOooOoOoOOoo

The apple employees are setting up the mouse for the Minis PowerMacs and iMacs.

I thought this was a joke or another apple site spoof. Totally uncalled for, my first reaction was "WTF?". I was sure it would have bluetooth, guess not yet. The design looked odd at first, after reading up on it, it actually makes sense. I think we will see this make the news today. Nothing that makes me want to go out and buy one, I will wait until the bluetooth version comes out and they correct any problems with the rev A product.

I give it a 3 out of 5.

What besides no bluetooth option do you not like about it

Let us know when you actually make your first post using the Mighty Mouse! ;)

In Tiger you can program the right button to be the primary one - for left-handed people as good as for right-handed ones.

I think it must still be confusing when instructed to "right-click" when you're a south-paw. "Now, is that my right or yours?"...

Kudos on the new up to date avatar ;)
Thanks... I'll fix it up a little later, with a red Apple logo and a light gray background (to blend in with the MR surroundings).

Well, Doofy is a gen-1 guinea pig for this new mouse. Just ordered. I'll let you all know how it is.

Default settings?

Can anyone confirm whether the default setting for the new mouse is two buttons (primary left, secondary right) or one (primary left, primary right)? Meaning, if the second button (I realize there actually are no buttons at all, but for the sake of making this question understandable let's just stick to the usual terms) is mapped as "primary click" or "secondary click"?

Sigh. I would have sworn I'd read "pressure-sensitive" somewhere, but can't find it any more. That's a pisser. I think my hand would get tired having to lift my left finger to right-click. I'll definitely have to be in the "test first" crowd (but don't think I won't be smart enough to grab the guy off the shelf and hold it in my left hand while my right hand is testing the display model! Come on, folks, where'd you learn to shop?)

Ah, well. I guess that's why there will eventually be a Version 2.0. ...

The Perfect Product Launch

Looks like Apple may have finally pulled off the perfect product launch. ZERO leaks about the product, and IN most of the stores on day one. That's pretty amazing right there! Got mine in the Huntington LI store.

One thing I think about is cleaning the scroll ball. I see no way to open this thing up at all. But like an iPod, I'm sure there must be some way..

The default is
Left button = Primary (like a regular click on a one button mouse)
Right button = Secondary (like control-click on a one button mouse)
You can also switch them to be the opposite for lefties.

Well i also thought that this was a bummer, but then i did some test, and tried to see what i normally do when i right click, and to my amazement i automatically lift my left finger to do a right...it is as if this mouse was made for me "runs out to buy one" :D :D

I'm going down to the Apple Store today if someone can tell me whether or not they're there yet or not.

It sounds like it dpends where you are. Some stores have had limited quantities (10-15), most have sold out from the sounds of it, and others haven't received any shipments yet. I'd phone and see if your specific store has any in, and then if they do, reserve yourself one!
