Only an idiot would take such a lowball offer. I sold my Series 2 42mm stainless on eBay for over double that when I bought my 3 42mm Stainless.

I also offer recycling for free
Hahaha ask someone for their gold edition watch...

Never understood the logic of free recycling..it's supposed to be free, and i facts they are supposed to pay us a fair value, but alas, that doesn't happen.. besides it costs shipping charges too, so not technically free ;)

$50?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I rather sell it on eBay more money
Not sure I'd trust ebay with all the stories I've heard about buyers scamming the sellers by saying the item was broke or something wrong, send back something else or their actual broken item and ebay refunds them the money

Previously they didn't give you anything at all for recycling a perfectly working watch, really Apple? Really? Talk about a slap in the face to your customers... even with the prices you are now offering... I'm starting to see Apple in a new light... ridiculous

SS 42mm Series 0 are selling for around $100 on eBay. I get to keep the ($29) charging cable and ($50) band if I trade it in to Brightstar. Seems reasonable to me.
I traded in an iPhone 6+ at the Apple Store for $175 I think. They use Brightstar. Got the trade-in value subtracted from the cost on my iPhone 7 immediately.

Did you see all the bad reviews about them? I would stay far far away from those people, and a stainless steel 42mm is selling well over $100 on eBay.. either that or you're looking at broken ones ... The sport 42 sells for over 100 ...and by the way how is your old used band worth $50 still?

This is ridiculous. Why would I sell a perfectly working watch for a fraction of its value?

If Apple were responsible they would propose you to upgrade the internals of your watch to a more recent version. The form factor did not change at all between v0 and v1, and probably insignificantly from v1 to v2 and v2 to v3.

My v0 stainless steel is still in great shape - as should be expected with its sapphire glass. The ability to get a speed bump while reusing the enclosure would be a really environmental initiative.

You can get way more money selling AW on eBay. And if all I can get is $50 I'd much rather give it for free to a friend or a relative.

seems like a slap in the face and a terrible deal

pretty sure the stainless steel apple watches are worth more than $175 just based on raw materials and the silver they use

someone prove me wrong though
Not sure of it's value but I agree... but I think it's more like a kick in the nards lol. I'd rather give my watch away than take their offer.

My £1000k Black SS ..... can't wait for the UK scheme ....

Holy crap! I will definitely not be using them in the future. That's an insane amount of people. I'd be better off risking Craigslist.
And they're all recent too! It's not like these are from 3 years ago and the company is totally different

What an embarrassment...

Gen 1, SS, 42mm, $75. Mine is in nearly perfect condition because it was replaced by AppleCare about 6 months ago and I've only used it about half that time. I think I could easily get more than that selling; and instead I'd just keep it for that amount of money.

I wish AT&T would take a $175 trade in on my Gen2. I'd get a Gen3 with LTE

Expensive hardware thats up for recycling at only 2 years old just seems totally nuts to me..

And that's where we're heading with watches and phones. If your phone is updated for only two / three years - are you willing to pay $1400? I'm not.

If you are sending something in to be recycled, then why do they care if everything works on it unless everything is being resold? Let me guess, it's because they "Care about the environment" and not trying to turn even more profit.

This should be deemed a reselling program. Shady.

Apple today updated its Renew and Recycling program for the Apple Watch, offering Apple Store gift cards for older Apple Watch devices that are in good working condition through a partnership with Brightstar.

Apple previously allowed customers to recycle the Apple Watch through its recycling program, but there were no gift cards offered. Gift cards received from recycling products can be put towards new devices purchased from the Apple Store, either at retail locations or online.

Gift cards are available for original Apple Watch models, Apple Watch Series 1 models, and Apple Watch Series 2 models, with Apple offering between $50 and $175 depending on device. For a 42mm stainless steel Apple Watch Series 2 in full working condition, for example, Apple is offering $175, which is the highest payout available.

For an original 42mm Apple Watch Sport model in good working condition, Apple is offering $50, the lowest payout. These prices are lower than what you might get attempting to sell a device on your own, but higher in some cases than the prices available through other trade-in programs.

Working condition means the device powers on, the enclosure is in good condition, there are no obvious signs of liquid damage, the display is in good condition, and the buttons are operational. Apple does allow for normal wear and tear when it comes to the display and the enclosure, however.

Apple is only offering money for Apple Watch devices that meet all of the above restrictions. For devices that are damaged in some way, Apple offers free recycling through Brightstar, but no gift card.

When recycling an Apple Watch through Brightstar, the company will allow you to use your own shipping or it will send a free shipping box. Customers must make sure the Apple Watch is free of all faults, all data has been wiped, and that the battery is fully charged. It does not appear that charging cables nor Apple Watch bands need to be sent with the Apple Watch.

Apple, in partnership with Brightstar, also offers gift cards when recycling a range of older iPhones, iPads, Macs, PCs, and smartphones from third-party manufacturers.

Agreed this IS a SLAP in Apple's customers' faces!

If Apple is serious about recycling, respects their faithful users, and is trying to user in a "closed-loop" supply chain of materials for production then they NEED to bring in recycling in house!

1. Savings of Costs
- CUT OUT the MIDDLE MAN! Brightstar has been in the business for a while and lasted ONLY by aligning themselves with large corporations but it's a dead end business. They obviously are taking a cut and Apple is NOT approving how much customers get only what they'll pay Brightstar. (thus the article needs to be adjusted to reflect this)

2. Economies of Scale and ease of return.
Setup appointments in various Apple retail stores and allow shipping into the stores - (Shipping paid by Apple) for customers to take in their used devices. Apple already knows what we purchaged and registered so there is no need to use and allow a third party access to end user data.

3. Simplicity & Trust:
using Apple Retails stores as an initial point of return (in person or by shipping) is ideal, and simple. Apple can offer either an in-store/online rebate or a cheque (direct deposit, Apple Pay Cash, physical cheque) to the person recycling within a week 5 business days.

Grant back the respect and trust of the end user, Apple. The grey market will continue to exist and this robs you of future sales becaues of this slap in the face recycling effort.

Hmmm, I wonder...
Gold Edition up front: $17,000
Apple's Recycle price; $150?

Had a very hard laugh when reading this. Apple's chutzpah in ultra high-definition.
[Also, not cash, but a gift card which is 50% from face value to them: $75/$17000 = 0.45% "appreciation"]

chutzpah
shameless audacity; impudence.
synonyms: cheek, guts, nerve, boldness.
