Why.. works perfectly.. looking or feeling around for the button every time I pick up an iPad.. no thanks.. I dont think you will see this long after this experiment falls flat on its face..

I have to agree. I actually really like FaceID. I haven’t had any issues with my Pro not recognizing me and unlocking. 🤷‍♂️

I am SO glad iPad Air now has USB-C. Now we just need USB-C on iPhone. Apple has no excuse for keeping their antiquated Lightning connector on such a high-end, expensive device!
It'll be the 'revolutionary' new feature they introduce on the iPhone 13.

Anyway, disappointing that they couldn't even make the camera flush. And of course another price bump. AU$900 for a glorified Candy Crush device is a little ridiculous.

I see. Apparently it has 4 grills on both sides which shows 2 speakers according to Rene Ritchie

How stupid is that
This is because Apple is using the iPad Pro 11” case for the iPad Air, and the reason the Air is 10.9” vs 11” is because it has slightly thicker bezels. Not sure why. But good call on Apple as it allows Air users to have the option of using the Magic Keyboard, which I can attest is an amazing accessory on the 12.9.

I think the Air is a compelling product, but honestly, when comparing it to the iPad Pro 11“, both in 256GB, they are $150 apart. For that $150, you get more RAM on the Pro, more powerful CPU (by quite a bit) for multi core, substantially more powerful GPU, 120Hz ProMotion display, 4 speakers, extra camera for the rear with Lidar, and FaceID. If you’re spending $750 on the Air, the extra on the iPad Pro in my opinion is easily worth the extra money, if nothing else for the RAM and display. But again, the new Air is a great product that makes a lot of sense to have in the lineup, as most people probably won’t even know about the differences between the two that I pointed out, and they will see the colors and design similarity and go with the Air.

Agree that the iPad Pro 11 still offer more features to justify the $200 difference. The bezel size difference you mentioned is also worth noting. It might not be clearly visible in photos but the bezels in the new Air is bigger.

I am in the same boat it still works but also has a hairline crack on screen. This one is enticing with no real downside that I can see compared our 1st gen Pros.

Also a 9.7 Pro user... This would give us roughly double the processor speed, double (presumably) the RAM, the larger screen of course, Pencil 2 support (for better or worse if you already own a Gen 1 pencil), 120 Hz display, and USB-C, but lose the headphone jack. Did I miss anything important?

Tempting at $599. But my 9.7" is a 128 Gb, so I'd be looking at $749 which is hard to justify...

Processor-wise I thought the new A14 chip means the new Air is more powerful than the iPad Pro, however I read a tweet somewhere that said A12Z is more powerful - is this right?

Also, what happened to the A13 chip?

My grandmother has been bugging me to update her 3rd gen Air and I‘m glad I held firm so I can get her the basic model with updated A12 chip.

What on earth is your Granny running that warrants that kind of performance ? I'm running a 6th gen and it still feels snappy as hell with anything I throw at it which includes 30+ channels of synths playback and Realtime video mixing.

Lucky granny ;)

I didn't think the iPad lineup was too confusing before, but it definitely is now with the increased pricing for the Air. I was considering the 11" Pro last spring, but wanted to see what was coming this fall since the rumors of the new Air had everything I was mainly looking for (new design, bigger screen, USB-C).

Here's my conundrum now... I could get by with 64GB since that is what I currently have, but I'd be more comfortable with more storage, so I better get the 256GB one to be safe ($749). But wait! The 11" Pro (128 GB) is only $50 more! Hmm, decisions, decisions. This would have been a no brainer if the prices for the Air remained the same. Maybe I'll just end up holding onto my Air 2 for another year. 🤷‍♂️

I'm thinking about upgrading my Ipad (12.9 in) but this is the first time I'm seeing the size. I wish they had one in the 12.9 inch or higher. The Air presentation today almost saved the event.

Also, I hate Face ID. It's useless wearing a mask, and if you are laying down in bed, it doesn't connect at all and you have to move around to have it connect. If I'm walking and want to check my stocks on the Fidelity app, and I have a mask on, Face ID is no good and I have to type in the password, which I don't want to do. With Touch ID, it just worked a lot better. If the Iphones get Touch ID back, I would probably consider trading in my XR for the new one.

Agree. Ipad Pro is tap the screen to unlock (Face ID). New iPad Air will still be find a button to unlock.

Or double-tap the space bar when using with Smart Keyboard or Magic Keyboard. It's really fast! Can't imagine reaching for a button.

Could well be the natural upgrade path from my current iPP 10.5. Stereo speakers pretty much clinch it for me.

Very happy they seem to have addressed my one major complaint with Air 3. I love mine overall, but the audio sounds like it’s only on the right side. It’s a disappointing experience for music, movies, etc.

Anyone notice this difference? Wondering what this means, or was this just overlooked?

Yeah.. but only 64 GB... and I won’t even start with the price for the keyboard.. and/or a cover.
In the end you can buy a MacBook.

I think this is the big issue with making the iPad your main computer. If you get the iPad Air as your primary computer, you might need to upgrade the storage to 256GB, so $750 for the iPad + $300 for the Magic Keyboard = $1,050 for a 10.9inch screen running IPadOS. You can get the 2020 MBA with a 13.3in screen running MacOS for $900 on sale. You would have money left over to put toward a standard iPad that will probably go on sale during the holidays for $250. That makes more sense for my purposes.

What 11" ipad pro has over the new ipad air

- 0.1"
- up to 1T SSD
- 10MP Ultra Wide
- starting with 128GB instead of 64 SSD
- the dimensions and weight are almost the same
- 600 nits max brightness over 500nits on the air
- ProMotion technology
- Brighter True Tone flash
- Four speaker audio
- faceID / touchID
- LIDAR
- more Ram

So, i hope this will be helpful

Personally I won't use the iPad for Pencil which both support. Really want some excellent multitasking which my Mini 2 can't do on iOS 12.
True that the camera and some other features are better on iPad Pro, BUT the new Air has full screen display AND I think the touchID button will be better than the faceID (hoping to see that on the iPhone 12s in all honesty - or at least both for when face detection isn't great, hello masked world!!).
