Apple is so far behind on almost everything. It’s becoming harder and harder to remain a fan. Where the heck is the iPad mini 6 redesign? Not interested in carrying around a heavy 11 inch iPad. All I want is an 8 inch iPad mini with a redesign!

Why do you both say this? Why is it trash on the ipad? I love it on my phone. So what makes it different?

On a phone it’s a lot less intrusive to use. I picked up the 12.9” 2020 pro and found faceid super annoying since there was a lot of times the iPad was in a comfortable to me position, but then faceid was needed and i either had to move the entire ipad or contort myself to try to let it see me.

How weird that A14 gets introduced in a product that’s not an iPhone. This is a first right?

It’s unusual but not a first. A4 debuted on the original iPad before being used in the iPhone 4 later the same year. A5 debuted on the iPad 2 before being used for the iPhone 4S.

Disagree. Taking away features that are incredibly useful isn’t old school. The pro is the flagship model.

The air and the base have kept the jack. This just feels like a pro. So basically your choice is the iPad with the old screen or one without a huge feature you love. I know it isn’t a big deal to y’all but Bluetooth ain’t good imo

What feature did Apple take away? I still use my headphones when I’m editing on my 12.9 pro. So it takes an adapter. Not an issue. We’ve been living the Apple dongle life for a long time now. Welcome to years ago. Do I enjoy the added expense? No, but it‘s not like we lost the ability to use a headphone jack if when we choose to. None issue. Besides Apple made the choice for us.

Amazing update. I can’t wait to see what Apple does to the Pro lineup next year.

And please bring the touch sensor to Iphone 12. We live in a mask world now...

Text input is still absurdly frustrating.

Still LCD with that awful backlight glow look.

They can tweak other stuff as much as they like.
These are huge.

Oh.. and multi-user login.

I wish Apple had simply upgraded the screen size to 11.5” back in April-May. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I thought the 12.9” was too big for couch or handheld use, and returned it for the 11”, which was a bit small, but more usable overall. If it was simply 11.5”, it would actually be the perfect iPad.

A14 is what Apple will put in the 12” MacBook to be released in November. The MacBook Air will have A14X in the Spring along with the iPad Pro. The MacBook Pros with Apple Silicon are not coming for another year.

There won’t be a 14” Apple Silicon MacBook Pro. Instead, 14” MacBook Air will take its place. The Apple Silicon MacBook Pro will be 16” only.

So, the products will be:
12” Macbook <= $1500
14” MacBook Air <= $2500
16” MacBook Pro > $2500

Looks like the cores in the a14 are only 20% faster than the a13. Very disappointing. Expectations were 40%.

Remember, the iPad has heavy thermal constraints. The process bump itself adds performance but you're also increasing power density.

Then these CPUs end up in Macs, which have fans and much better thermals, it's going to be mind blowing.

IMO promotion is worth the extra $200.

Very strange that a mid range product is getting the flagship A14 first though. iPhone will of course get it next year but it leaves the iPad Pro in a weird spot for the holiday season.
This is pretty subjective, for me promotion is worth very little. I regularly move from my 10.5 to my 12.9 first gen with no issues, I hardly even care... Quad speakers for me are a much bigger deal and are worth much more than pro-motion and is the only thing I would not want to give up. Maybe for someone else it's less important... Remains to be seen how good these new "stereo speakers"...

Still see the old Air on the Apple site, surprised it isn't live already. Even clicking on View more info on the main page tile for the new Air takes me to the old one. If I didn't have a Pro already this would be my new iPad. If it were $100 cheaper, it would be perfect IMO.

The new Air won't be available on their site until October, so the old Air is still available.

The new iPad Air will be available starting next month on apple.com and in the Apple Store app ...

The stated performance increases of the A14 relative to the two-year-old A12 translate to roundabout 16% faster CPU and 8% faster GPU relative to the A13. That is a solid generational increase. However, it pales compared to previous year-to-year increases and is far from the humongous increase that many tech writers expected.

In perspective, the move from TSMC's N7P to 5 nm alone was projected to improve performance by up to 15%, at iso power. Leaving aside the significant upgrade in AI performance, Apple seems to have optimized primarily for energy efficiency and scaling back the die area to minimize cost. This would be consistent with the transistor count, which is relatively low compared to the expected 15 billion that many assumed to be their transistor budget on 5 nm.

Looking back, the move from 10 nm to 7 nm that came with the A12 also saw a reduction in die size followed by an expansion on the A13 on what was an improved version of the same process node. This suggests that the A15 will be the larger performance upgrade. Not only will the 5nm node be more mature, but expected increases in energy efficiency in other system components (LTPO display, X60 modem) will also allow Apple to prioritize performance more strongly.

It still sucks though

The adapter gets in the way. Just because apple makes a choice doesn’t mean it’s right and that I can’t complain. You could still do everything you do right now with a jack. You’re paying more to get less. My 40 dollar earbuds sound better than a 250 dollar pair of AirPods and that’s crazy my friend.

Not to mention the air 4 comes in at only 64 gigs at base, yikes.

This thing will replace my Pro 10.5" some day. Love it. Sidenote: hopefully since the Pros have been around for so long now the squarish chassis is less prone to bending.

So ... other than ProMotion ... is the main difference that a new fancy Magic Keyboard only works on 11'' and 12.9'' iPad Pros?

I won't be suprised if they don't make this distinction more clear and release a new "perfectly sized" 11.95'' iPad Pro that comes bundled with the New Magic Keyboard (11.95'').

Also, maybe I am one of the very few that appreciates FaceID over TouchID. I didn't realize how much I liked it until I starting messing with my iPad Mini and was like "Dammit now I have to put my finger on it again" versus just swiping up and getting to it...
The ONLY thing I don’t like about FaceID is that the phone can’t read a face sideways. Otherwise, I mostly forget it’s there.
Btw Air 4 has 4 speakers too.
Only 2. I believe a tear down will show a single speaker ported to both sets of grills on the iPad Air.

The iPad air will be horrible with the apple pencil I guess, with its slow display.
