Depends when it was bought. According to wiki, only the 2nd and 3rd gen can do this. The 1st gen (made until March 2008) can't

You can do it with the first generation, but it's an either/or proposition.

Either it acts as a client, bridging WiFi to Ethernet, or it can act as a WiFi extender. Just not both at the same time.

No 10/100/1000 ... ummm wtf?

H squared, should make a wall mount for it... Or a rerapped Apple TV mount.

I use the apple power block extension cord on the older expresses. I have a few hanging around, wired into my network, covering a large area. I will wait another 3 years to upgrade I guess.

I also like the $49.00 AirPlay block with a 3.5mm jack and USB port idea. And have it be a smaller version of the old style.

Question

Assuming apple has the 14 day return policy on this, I may try it. Ths is why I'm asking this question. I have an Extreme in my home office, everything runs off it, besides computers, iPhones, friends apple iPhones/iPads, etc and 2 apple TVs (1 kinda far, and in an odd spot), a AT&t micro cell that should cover more of my house, be nice if I could make put my micro cell in a central area of the house, plus I'm in my backyard a lot and do not get full wifi on my iPhone or ipad out there. So could this enhance my wifi signal if put downstairs, closer to an AppleTv, boost my micro cell by being centralized, and get better wifi in my backyard? If this could boost my signals without loosing any of my Extreme power I'm sold. If speeds slow down no need. Oh I also have portable speakers some wifi like Bose, and simple 3.5. A more powerfull signal would be very cool. No I don't have the old airport express. I also have a 40.00 gift card unused for awhile, why I'm thinking more about it, then its 60.00. Any info would be great.

Some people really do want the moon on a stick. DSL modem?!

I got this device to extend the WiFi from my Time-capsule and it works a treat. Better, cheaper and timely for me as I was going to have to get an Extreme as the old Express didn't support 'n'.

I like the form factor change as it means I can site the device to give the best coverage rather than where the AC outlet is.

Only complaint would be that gigabit ethernet wouldn't have cost any more to implement although if I'm doing things that need that speed I usually plug in.

Oh - and "multiple speakers" don't seem to be supported with this device - when I select that in iTunes or on my iOS device I only get the ATV listed which is a shame. Bug, user error or 'feature'?

This may be a dumb question but why didn't apple add USB 3.0 support in the extreme? I would like to use it essentially as a time capsule since those apparently die after a year or 2 of use. Is it because backing up over Wifi is slow regardless if it is USB 2.0 or 3.0?

Any idea how this would compare to the 1st gen Time Capsule (the one without the dual bands)?

Worthy of a purchase?

I currently have the Time Capsule plugged into my modem, also another static machine on the network for iTunes streaming connected via. Wifi.

I use my old PPC G5 running Tiger as a server. Anyone know if this could hook into my current ATT Motorola modem to improve the WiFi signal/speed?

It's because the new model still can't do hard drive sharing..only printer. They save hard drive sharing for the Extreme. That said, hopefully the next Extreme upgrade has 3.0 :)

It always had a WAN port, but that didn't let you plug in a computer to give it network access. They've now added a LAN port for this purpose. WAN would be to connect your Internet modem into.

The WAN port can be also used a LAN port when the previous-generation AirPort Express joins a wireless network. I have been doing this to an old computer which has only USB1.1 and can not recognize a USB2.0 WiFi card.

As stated previously in the thread, the Airport Express I had was apparently too old to support this feature. The models that came after the one I purchased do have this feature. :)
