Apple is investigating a bug that may cause iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models to freeze after customers transfer their data from an older iPhone, the company said today in an internal memo obtained by MacRumors.

In the memo, Apple says it is "aware of this issue happening and is investigating." Apple specifically says that some customers may find their new iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max models freezing and becoming unresponsive after an iCloud restore or data transfer from their previous iPhone during the Quick Start process.

As a temporary fix, Apple advises customers to force restart their iPhone if it becomes unresponsive for more than five minutes. New iPhone 14 Pro customers faced a similar issue on Friday regarding device activation. While the iPhone 14 Pro ships with iOS 16, there is an available iOS 16.0.1 update that customers should install after setting up their new devices.

I experienced it transferring from my 13 Pro. My 13 Pro said it finished transferring, and my 14 Pro was completely unresponsive. Luckily, it just needed a hard reboot, and it kept all the transferred data. It was a bit scary at first though.

That’s a really crummy customer experience for a $1000+ phone…not that “apple way”

I did not do a transfer using iCloud. I do not use iCloud. I restored from a local backup in iTunes, an iPhone backup that I’ve literally been maintaining since 2007. Thankfully everything seems to be okay on my 14 Pro Max as far as I can tell a day and a half in.

People here like to constantly talk smack about me still using iTunes for updates instead of OTA, and backups instead of iCloud; because “eeewwww that uses wires” and “that’s old!” But it’s increasingly proving itself to be the more reliable method of device management. Idk, keep enjoying the paid less secure/less functional alternative i guess.

I didn’t have this problem but couldn’t restore from back up or transfer from my 128gb 12 Pro to my 256gb 14 Pro because apparently there wasn’t enough space on the new 14 Pro. Tried numerous times including restoring from a backup on my Mac.

Contacted Apple support and they had no advice. Said they’d look at advice documentation and get back to me. That was a couple of days ago.

What is the best way to copy whatever I have on 13 Pro to 14 Pro?
The BEST way? That'd be to complete an encrypted backup of your 13 Pro to your computer via Finder, and then restoring your 14 Pro from that backup. It is by far the longest process for data transfer, but in the long run, it helps significantly cut down on the time you spend re-logging into apps, re-syncing data to apps, etc. on your 14 Pro.

Received my iPhone 14 Pro Max on Friday around 1PM CST.
Updated in Finder to iOS 16.0.1
Phone SIM to eSIM Transfer failed.
Initial attempt at a phone to phone transfer said around 3½ hours... Then failed.
Phone then prompted to Erase & Reset
Phone SIM to eSIM Transfer failed again.
Tried a Restore from iCloud Backup, and that took about 1½ hours.
Phone SIM to eSIM Transfer STILL not working.
Spent 45 min on a call with someone at AT&T only for them to cold transfer me to some other lady...
This lady was able to help me in all of about 10 minutes. Phone works!

Now I start restoring my Apple Watch. Takes about 20 minutes. Watch Works!

Then I notice that my Apple Music Library isn't completing it's sync, and not all of my music is listed.
Tried various troubleshooting.. Nothing.
This morning around 9AM CST I tried "updating" in Finder to the latest release, and still no Music Library.
So I just did an Erase and Restore, waiting on that now.

I'm sure this is going to be a great phone whenever I can get to using it normally...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

iPhones have come a LONG way and are much more complex than they were 10-15 years ago.
First that’s an excuse….second Apple has chosen to make things complicated. Hell iTunes was using mostly legacy code till a couple years ago…..20 years later.
I expect better from apple and when people just let stuff go and make excuses enables them to continue this garbage.

I think it depends on a person, that's why there's a choice (iCloud or local backup). For example, if your main device is a laptop, there's a risk of something happening to it etc. In that case, there's no alternative for iCloud.

In the iCloud keynote, Steve Jobs shared his vision that PC was "downgraded" and became just one of the many electronic devices. iCloud is the digital hub and backup centre now.
