I did restore my iPhone 14 Pro Max to iOS 16.0.1 using IPSW method on Finder app before setup using my MacBook Pro 16" 2021.

After updated to iOS 16.0.1, I started restore my iPhone 14 Pro Max from my iPhone 12 Pro Max via Quick Start.

During quick start, my eSIM and my Apple Watch were transferred to my iPhone 14 Pro Max from my iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I noticed no freezing/no brick after data transfer on my iPhone 14 Pro Max on its first day (September 16, 2022).

I did not do a transfer using iCloud. I do not use iCloud. I restored from a local backup in iTunes, an iPhone backup that I’ve literally been maintaining since 2007. Thankfully everything seems to be okay on my 14 Pro Max as far as I can tell a day and a half in.

People here like to constantly talk smack about me still using iTunes for updates instead of OTA, and backups instead of iCloud; because “eeewwww that uses wires” and “that’s old!” But it’s increasingly proving itself to be the more reliable method of device management. Idk, keep enjoying the paid less secure/less functional alternative i guess.

Sad fact is many, probably most iPhone owners do not own a Mac or Windows computer. I agree with your method, but I too am ”old.”

Apple has for about ten years now made it so that a computer is not required for setup, most people move from phone to phone like hermit crabs. It’s never going to be as reliable. But I think the age of most people owning a proper computer is over.

I just hope the day doesn’t come that Apple decides that number is too few to be worth it and discontinues the functionality. They’ll probably never remove it from the Mac, but Windows could be another story.

I always do clean setups. Wipe old phone, transfer sim, start new phone, enter apple id, install all apps in the same order as the old phone, done.
I like a simple config, probably that is why it is easier for me to do it that way. No need for 100 apps on my device. On the work iPad, that’s another story.
I never trust inter-device migrations and in place migrations. Too much room for weirdness to happen down the line if something is not copied right or corrupted. This goes for windows mac and iOS.

Yeah this happened twice to me - a 12 Pro Max to a 14 Pro Max, and again on a XS Max to a 12 Pro Max - both after transferring directly from the previous phone. I just force rebooted and they both booted up fine with all the correct copied data, but I can imagine to just a normal user, it would be confusing and worrisome, and they'd probably not even know how to force reboot.

...my 14 Pro was completely unresponsive. Luckily, it just needed a hard reboot, and it kept all the transferred data. It was a bit scary at first though.

I've experienced similar update behavior from all of my Apple products. Sometimes it's effortless, others the screen goes dark for a long time and you wonder if you need to intervene. A subset of those events end in a non-functional device. My MBP actually required another mac to revive it after one update. There is no consistency to what triggers a self-destruct or how long you must wait while it appears dead before trying to revive it.

Scary it the right word for it.

I've had no issues with my 14 pro max that i picked up yesterday. I took it home and used my iCloud back up to transfer data from my old phone.. Hopefully "no issues" continue!

I tried to do the side by side transfer at set up but it would not connect to my other phone. So I did an iCloud restore instead. I did not have any issues with that though. There must be a common element among those who have encountered this freezing issue. Hope they get it sorted out fast.

I have it on good authority that bugs: small, big, and hairy bugs are completely expected, acceptable, and not a negative reflection on a company.

Apple products used to be most trustworthy but have become disappointingly sloppy.

First that’s an excuse….second Apple has chosen to make things complicated. Hell iTunes was using mostly legacy code till a couple years ago…..20 years later.
I expect better from apple and when people just let stuff go and make excuses enables them to continue this garbage.
As you wish.

The software is incredibly frustrating. I have no idea what my 14 ProMax is trying to do, but it’s just hoarding system data - Apple Support are just saying this is “usual behaviour” for 3 days after setting up, but it’s just a pain.

Temporary relief being a soft reboot.

Jokes.

After reading all those storys i am glad that i decided to wait for the 15. To me it sounds a little funny how peoples do respond to all the fails apple did with iphone 14. It's okay, It's new, it's working now after 20 hrs of trying... Hell - become men! I really think there will be a lawsuit for that. Step back and look how the situation actually is. Apple's softwareteam did a terrible job or - apple pushed them a lot because they want to sell it even undone. Iphone isn't a china android phone for 200 bucks. If you pay 1000, 2000 bucks for a phone it must be perfect from day one.
