I wish iFIXIT app was there. Actually, why can't we have APPLE as an app? I would like to see bunch of episodes of what they really been doing all these years....

Considering this is a completely new platform, this dev cycle has been way too short, especially with iOS 9 and watchOS 2 overlapping it. I most likely won't have my app ready for the launch date, and I imagine many others won't, either.

I agree, it's getting really difficult to keep up.

Plex just mentioned on Twitter that they will be launching the app on AppStore on Apple TV launch. https://twitter.com/plexapp/status/656960207994556416

I still don't get what Plex exactly is. All I want to do is streaming my .mkv / .iso files from my NAS to the AppleTV (like I do it right now with a cheap WD TV Media Player.
I understand that it is not possible with Apple TV (without an App). So is this what Plex is all about?
Thanks

Better put your thinking caps on :D if u haven't got a cap, buy one and put it on.

I wonder it App store on tvOS will allow review not just screenshots but videos in description pane, the same as the App store now does on iOS.

I am so curious to see with what ideas developers will come up. Will buy the new Apple TV probably anyway, don't have 4K TV and don't plant on buying one in the next 10 or 12 years. Just bought a 1080p HD TV two years ago.

It will be interesting to see if Amazon is filing for its app.

I highly doubt it, the recent move is territorial and I would not expect a change in position until it's clear that the fire tv is dying. They understand that a percentage of users are picking ios devices because they are invested in the ecosystem so they need to stop supporting it in any ways if they want their fire devices to have a chance against the apathetic masses.

that makes sense, as an explanation, but it seems to go against what I've always considered to be Amazon's core strategy of getting their content (and storefront) to as many customers as possible, no matter what the platform. What's changed?

Plex will replace the WD. Interface is much better, everything happens much quicker. The down side is Plex has been eternally buggy no matter what platform you use. For a techie, it's not big deal. Releasing Plex to the family can mean walks to the TV room (or pulling up Screen Sharing) and getting it working again. Plus there's a never ending flow of dot updates. In my experience these are a total waste of my time as they tend to work fine in some systems and not work in others. Once I got Plex running well, I stopped updating. My server and player side is so old it required a manual, file by file install, on Yosemite. But it works flawlessly and I spend no time on updates and no time searching for fixes at Plex forums.

Crosses fingers that plex app is approved for launch...
I don't know Apple's review process. But Plex has had so many bugs over the years on the OSX and Win side I could see Apple taking a close look at their product. And perhaps no approval until they get it working seamlessly. In the meantime, there could be some alternatives: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/1...arty-plex-client-for-the-new-apple-tv-4th-gen

I'm more inclined to try a third party player rather than whatever Plex initially releases.

So the real question is if there will be in-app purchases so kids don't charge up credit cards again. #freemium

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to put in the password for your Apple ID, or at least put in your finger print to authorise in-app purchases? If so how can you kids buy stuff?

It's not a change in strategy to me, more like doubling down on the fire platform. It is unfortunate but I believe Amazon and its prime strategy are really reshaping the site. Over the past 5 ( or more ) years as they have branched out into more and more areas they have seriously lost their way and are becoming a victim of their own success.

Their books and other physical items are rarely the cheapest, small items are the worst since they now include the prime tax. Their storefront is rife with garbage listings and bad sellers. Their video service is mediocre at best and their App Store is, let's face it, a hopeless attempt to uproot google play as the standard for android app stores. Don't worry, if someone gets in their way they will ban them or get the US government to sue them.

Especially when I was a developer who didn't get the offer for the test apple TV... have to wait it out...

That's going to be fun with a long and complex password... Not.

Yeah, wait to debut your app in the new "retina" ( aka 4k ) model next year :).

Exactly. If they had announced this at WWDC (and made dev units available to more developers), there would probably be a lot more apps ready by now.

I haven't used Plex in years, but does Plex still require a computer to be running with the Plex server? I have a hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme. Can I use Plex from that? I have been using Infuse to AirPlay to my current TV.

Plex still requires the service to be running on a computer; in some cases, particularly on a device like the Apple TV that doesn't support some formats natively, it's necessary in order to transcode the file to something that the Apple TV can play.
