Well they are both actual computers, but I think the iPad is Jobs’ ultimate vision of the personal computer. I remember watching videos of him discussing the future of computing, which were thin clients with cloud access. It’s pretty exciting to see how far we’ve come. Macs are great too, but they are relics when looking towards the future.
The actual initial vision of the Mac was based on Alan Kay's "Dynabook" concept. More laptop than tablet; but still closer than the original "toaster" Mac.

Oh, happy day! My 2012 iMac died a couple of months ago. I would be happy with a new iMac or a new Mac Mini. I have 2 old Mac Minis in my closet. The lack of a graphics card pushed me to an iMac. If the mini can drive a huge monitor, then that is the way that I will go. I'm a software developer and need a lot of screen real estate for monitoring my MongoDB servers, development IDEs, etc. I have been suffering on my Lenovo gaming laptop.

Yea, I wasn't referencing the original Mac, this was after that. There was a video of Jobs' going over his vision for the future and he kept referencing cloud connected thin clients that could be hooked up to a larger monitor at a desk. If I can find it, I will post later.

I was born in Brooklyn. “Artsy” wasn’t how it was described back then. “History” isn’t a long time :)

Don’t be silly. The logos never mean much of anything. There will NEVER be a modular MacBook Pro. And they won’t be adding “proper ports.” If anything, they will remove ports.

CORRECTION: I meant Mac Pro!

This is a crucial keynote for Apple. It will show us their direction for next few years. If there is nothing interesting (nice tech for a reasonable price), I will have to get out of the ecosystem.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that comment in the last 20+ years, i would be rich. Haaaaave you met Apple?

This will be an hour long iPad Pro special event with heavy focus on creativity and the upcoming Adobe apps for iPad. Apple Pencil 2 will also be revealed.

There'll be no new Macs or Macbooks revealed at this event. Their Mac focused event will be in March 2019, when they launch the new modular Mac Pro, new Mac Mini and an affordable new MacBook (Air). March is, after all, not that far away now, it's in less than 5 months.

The new iPad Pro will be so expensive, with so high profit margin, that Apple wants people to focus on spending on the "post-PC era" device during the holidays, not on a Mac. Think of a (relatively) similar price increase that iPhone X had from iPhone 7.

ermm before the "desktop revolution" all computers were "thin clients" connecting to a network of sorts. I'm not sure you can attribute this "vision for the future" to Steve Jobs.

Well that's a very short sighted approach to me. No one is saying Macs are going away, but they will become used less and less over time. iPad';s can absolutely be productive computers. I manage a team of 60 people with nothing but my iPad Pro. My fiancee runs a graphic design business from her iPad Pro. It all comes down to the individual and their task. That old mentality that "real work" can only be done on a traditional desktop or laptop is just ignorant in my eyes, and usually comes from people who are simply afraid of adapting their workflows (or accepting their value) in an uncertain future. I always say though, use the best tool for the task at hand, so I support any decision people make in this regard.

I never said ipads can’t be used productively. I don't disagree with what you said, even though you both agree and disagree with what I said at the same time. :) Namely: "productivity" is application-specific. I find certain work to be infinitely easier with a mouse & keyboard than touch-screen, especially when working CAD/drafting, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I find the similar to be true when recording & mixing multi-track music for hours, where, further, having a few key ports nearby (USB) for quick connects instead of chasing down a dongle or port bank makes for efficient & flexible work. I place value in not having to reach/touch or even hold a screen, and I like the efficiency of manipulating via keyboard & mouse simultaneously. Now, if a MBP-esque setup offered additional touchscreen capability (re: my ipad/MBP dual-iOS/OSX-boot scenario), it might help at times to have the iPad touchability. But for being productive, even responding to a thread like this, using my MBA with hands on input devices and not reaching all over is far preferred over using an iPad via voice input or on-screen typing. Again, needing a classic desk/laptop for productive work should not be considered "ignorant" -- it's application-specific. Dismissing others' statements without at least some investigation can be considered "ignorant," lol. Meant with respect. :)

Yea, it's gotta be available somewhere, but I couldn't find it after a quick search. I just think it's pretty cool (considering the rumors of external display support) that they are finally realizing his initial vision. I wouldn't be surprised if we had a docking station for the iPad in a few years.

Just the people who are too stupid to realize they can use a USB-C port as a USB-A port with a $2 passive adapter.

Yeah, those stupid people who don’t like having to get, tote along, and keep track of said adapter wherever they take their “portable and convenient all-in-one” MB that’s unfortunately been trending towards being “7/8ths in one.”

Boy wouldn’t it be nice to just have that connectivity already conveniently built-in! That would take a good big-picture designer. Guess Apple’s short that type of designer.

The Mac needs and deserves its own event at this point. Anything less is an affront to the Mac platform and the Steves’ legacy.

I couldn't find the video, so not trying to go back and forth about it, but I thought he was more so referencing a tablet. If I can find it later, I will follow up. If I am just wrong, my bad. It was one of those bearded Jobs videos when he was with NeXT.

Your iPad needs an app from which you can manage your team. Your wife needs an app on her iPad so that she can do graphic design. Guess on which devices are those apps created? Desktop. That's right. Desktop.

Therefore, the real work will be done on desktop for years, maybe decades to come.

That's fair, I agree. It all depends on the task and user. People just need to stop acting like work can't be done on an iPad. I literally use it for work all day. My tasks aren't operational in nature, but operational work aren't the only careers out there.

Oh yea, that's my favorite Jobs.

I'd guess this is pretty close to accurate.

I'd also expect some portion of this keynote to talk about education / young people. Both to push back-to-school and emphasize this market for the cheaper iphone.

For now, that's correct. Xcode for iPad will be here before you know it though. I sense that scares you.

Anyway, Macs aren’t going anywhere, but they’ll be used less and less. iPad’s sell more today. That’s not changing.

Thin client was pretty much the mantra back in the late 80s/early 90s days. Jobs certainly wasn’t the only one talking about it.

I find it interesting that so many people forget about the Knowledge Navigator. People like to attribute everything to Jobs, but if you watch the Knowledge Navigator video, you see so much of the iPad vision, from wireless networking to cloud storage to touch screen to Siri to a tablet design. And Jobs had nothing to do with it.
