My Grandpa told me Apple once made "Desktop" computers like the one my teacher uses at school.
iMacs are actually a decent-selling line for Apple, 10-15 percent of all Macs sold. Notebooks are about 80% of their sales.

In fact, even for PCs notebook computers are so powerful, they greatly outsell the desktop dinosaurs your Grandpa was forced to use, shackled to his desk. For example last year, about 170 million notebooks were sold but fewer than 100 million desktops :(

What’s truly amazing is the powerful tablet computers and iPhones that enable many to use them as their only computer. At the other end of the spectrum, real power users utilize cloud-based CPU and GPU compute resources, where they’ll spin up dozens, hundreds or even thousands of processors to do the work in minutes that once took hours or days—or wasn’t even possible with the likes of your Grandpa’s antiques!!

Remember when we were waiting with anticipation? Now it's just boring
with a boring leader taking the stage.

Because they keep releasing the same [slightly improved] stuff every year ....
A new iteration of an iPhone, iPad and, yes, the Apple Watch do not need
an event every year!! iPad Pro 1 needs an event because it's a new thing.
iPhone 8s does not ....

Apple's been boring for awhile now.
And nobody gives a tinker's cuss about AR anymore, either.

They will preview the Apple pinky ring as well to go along with Steve Jobs style Apple AR spectacles.

Just adding some ridiculousness to the inevitable tea leaf reading thats about to commence.

OKAY. CRAZIEST predictions that are in no way shape or form true (except maybe number 8):

4. It's a Motion Sensitive ring...

I actually wondered about an ApplePay ring, like some banks are offering.

But i doubt Apple could make it small, cool, and gold ... technology has a couple of years to go.

Because their biggest innovations now are only about taking things away.

Buttons, jacks, function keys, bezels, useful aspects of skeumorphism, ports, MagSafe, thickness...

How freaking boring has it been since 2013 to wait to see what’s going away each year?

Oh, they will care. AR is going to be amazing.

And a brand new phone along with a brand new screen size deserves an event.

The improvements in silicon, graphics and camera are actually quite significant. Upgrades are on cycles. Some people are coming from iPhone 6s hardware or even earlier. Very exciting depending on who you ask.

As a couple of others have suggested, I too think its the redesigned digital crown on Apple Watch 4.
They look very similar.
But then why would an entire event theme be based around the crown?
Unless it indicates a round watch with a redesigned crown and the crown is just hinting towards the watch?
Maybe this is the next leap forward with Apple Watch, perhaps this will be the first "Apple Watch Pro" .... with Stylus? :p
Maybe they're doing away with the watch altogether and just keeping the crown? Apple Crown?

or

Perhaps Apple are bringing back the "click wheel"?
iPhone Xs with nostalgic click wheel? Maybe the notch is gone and the click wheel is replacing it? :p

Apple Halo? :) The problem with NFC rings is that you can't access your store/rewards cards etc as you can with Apple Watch and iPhone. An ApplePay Ring would only give you access to ApplePay.
I have a BW Halo which is great for paying for things but if you want to use rewards cards, say Woolies or FlyBuys, then you still have to whip out your wallet/phone.
But maybe that will change in the near future, like you say this technology has a couple of years to go.

please please please Apple, I need 12.9 iPad Pro in Space Grey! no rose gold nooooooooooooo.

Gather Round is a colloquium for “I have a secret to share” , so expect the unexpected, be happy at any expected upgrades, BUT look out for the “secret to share” !

Apple has the capacity and $ to introduce the “MAC MICRO” as well as a “Mac Mini Pro”, But they will do what will be a seller, not necessarily what is expected!

We all know capacity, speed etc doubles every ?? So many months.... and sure those products/updates can simply be added to the Apple Store/s with little fanfare... but the “I have a secret to Share” , about something new, innovative, or unexpected is what has made Apple the 1st Trillion $ Company. Let’s not loose our focus, look for the secrets but be happy with the expected!

If and when a car is announced, a Mac Micro, Mac Mini Pro, breathtaking Displays, or even a personal defibrillator within all Apple devices, or iSmart Glasses that automatically adjust to reading, long distance, sunglasses and night driving (to eliminate the now epidemic over powered and misdirected LED car headlights etc etc...whatever the new products, I am sure Apple will do it well, other companies can as well, time will tell... but if so, Apple can buy them!

I think it's the crown of the Apple Watch Series 4 without the thin red line --> NON-LTE Apple Watch Series 4 in a new color. o_O

Could this be the end of the lightning connector and a move to the smart connector?

I suppose my iPhone 5 makes me a literal fossil.

I laughed when it said "Apple's low-cost iPhone, which could be priced around $700" that's far from low cost phones. I truly wish they'd release real budget alternatives otherwise people will simply flock to Android. You can actually buy incredible quality phones for $300USD off contract and they don't suck at all.

Apple today sent out media invites for its annual iPhone-centric event that will be held on Wednesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park Campus in Cupertino, California.

The media invites released today give a first look at the theme of the event and feature the tagline "Gather Round," likely referencing the main ring-shaped building at Apple Park.

There are a lot of product refreshes that we could see at the fall 2018 event. First and foremost, Apple is expected to be introducing three iPhones this year: a second-generation 5.8-inch OLED device, a larger-screened 6.5-inch OLED device, and a lower-cost 6.1-inch smartphone with an LCD display.

All three iPhones are expected to feature upgraded A12 processors, faster LTE, edge-to-edge displays, and Face ID integration, with Apple doing away with the Home button for its entire 2018 iPhone lineup.

Apple's low-cost iPhone, which could be priced around $700, is expected to use an aluminum frame and a single-lens camera, keeping costs low. The two OLED iPhones, which could cost somewhere between $800 and $1,000, will use stainless steel frames with dual-lens cameras.

Along with fresh iPhones, Apple is expected to introduce the Apple Watch Series 4, which is said to feature a larger display likely implemented through a reduction in bezel size. Longer battery life and improved health monitoring capabilities are also rumored, but beyond that, we don't know much about the new wrist-worn devices.

New iPad Pro models with Face ID, slimmer bezels, and no Home button are in the works, as are refreshed Macs that include a low-cost MacBook and a new Mac mini, but it is not clear if these products will come at the September event.

Apple may use a second October event to unveil new iPads and Macs as it has done in past years where Macs and iPads were introduced in the fall.

New Apple Watch bands, revamped AirPods with "Hey Siri" support, and the long-awaited AirPower charging mat, which is designed to charge the Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods at the same time, will all likely be introduced in September.

Apple's 2018 iPhone keynote event will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple will live stream the event on its website and on Apple TV, but for those who are unable to watch, MacRumors will be providing full event coverage both on MacRumors.com and through our MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

That will be a superb event.

It is low budget for flagship devices.

Oneplus is the only phone out that is fairly cheap that's any good. It's clear by sales fiqures that people have no issues paying apple's prices.
