I decided that I'll go a head and buy the first generation iPad and be an early adopter ... I can't wait for the second release. My first gen iPhone still works great and I don't have any 3GS envy.

yawn... can we please get information about real computers that do important things that our careers depend on...

The more I see and read of the iPad, the more I warm up to the concept, but still... $499 for the base model. That is what will keep me away for the time being. I know that's cheap for what it is, but it's still way too much for something as limited as it is. I just can't justify it. Still, I hope initial sales are huge and allow Apple to push the cost down in the future. They did it with the iPod and iPhone, so hopefully the iPad will receive similar treatment. Get the price down to $299 and I'm there.

Yeah, I'm just hoping they announce UK pricing at the same time as opening pre-orders. If they say on the UK site that they're shipping in 60/90 days like in the US, they'll have to.

I hope!

PS. I think the Guardian were guessing - I doubt they have any concrete information. They were just taking the 'uk pricing yet to be announced' thing and adding it to the 'shipping in March' thing and guessing that's when the UK pricing would be announced.

"Although it announced US prices for all six versions of the touchscreen "tablet" device with and without 3G connectivity at the launch on Wednesday night by Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs, the UK office said today that there will be no UK prices offered until the launch, expected in 60 days' time – or 90 days for the 3G versions."

I just got that from the article I think you're referring to. I'm hoping it just means we'll get the prices at the point it becomes available to everyone.

Sigh. i just want my iPad...

Yeah thats the one. If they were just putting 2 things together though why link it to the UK office saying something.

They should just say apple is expected to announce UK pricing at the end of March. Hope your right though.

So bad news...I really wanted GPS without having to go for 3G.
But location services using that wifi location service (blanking on the name) will still be available won't it? Be odd that it is on the Touch but not the iPad.

Pretty much decided I want one
Still undecided about Wi-Fi or 3G

Wish we didn't have to wait longer for the 3G

Yeah.... that's why I'm getting wi-fi. I want to use this more like a computer, so I don't need 3G. Plus, I don't want to wait, and I plan on camping out in front of the apple store at 4AM

Ipad

yes I want 1 it will replace my Msiwind hacintosh netbook I take back and forth to work with me. Email internet browsing social nets and the like... I would like to see hulu I just dont want the ipad to become a 10 inch gameboy geared to kids with no desposable income..

Not saying all games are bad but if that becomes its only venue I will sell every mac in my home and office and thats quite a few..

sorry for the spelling english is not my native language.

This is obviously just one guy's opinion, but I think people that say this don't realize just how useful of a tool the iPod Touch already is when you've got the right apps.

Personally I'd like an intermediate sized device somewhere between the Touch and the iPad. I'm going to look at these when they are actually in the store, but while I'd like a larger screen than my Touch has, not being able to put it in a pocket - even a big coat pocket - may be a deal breaker for me. I can't see any reason for me to own both an iPad and an iPod.

My guess is that the ipod touch eventually gets bigger. Around 5" diagonal like the forthcoming dell phone. I still dont quite get having a touch as opposed to an iphone, but that is clearly just my issue given the current sales pace.

AppAdvice, however, isn't a particularly reliable source of rumors as they previously claimed the iPhone 3GS would have an OLED screen and FM transmitter (both of which were not true).

I'm surprised you missed this, but the iPhone 3G and 3GS both have FM radios which have yet to be activated. So AppAdvice technically was right.

Apple's iPods and iPhones have been able to receive FM radio signals for some time now. The latest generation of iPhone and iPod touch can even broadcast FM signal, for instance to a car stereo. The ability of the iPhone and iPod touch to receive FM signals has been used solely in the implementation of the Nike+ ecosystem to this point.

I hope they ship the exact same version they said they would at the keynote. Only a memory upgrade would interest me, but I don't expect it will happen.

Sick of all the "ipad is missing blah blah blah" talk. It's great as it is.

Now lets be real. The thing is great as is, but clearly a particle transporter or food-a-rac-a-cycle would make it better. Lets hope they make it better albeit with a somewhat lower bar than the aforementioned.

I kinda wish Apple included a 3.5mm Line-in jack for audio. The iPad would make a great portable tool for recording audio given that some cool apps come out for it. An Audacity app for the iPad would be amazing IMO. What do you guys think?

The 30-pin connector has pinout for line input. The question is whether or not the hardware connects those pins, and if the audio chip reads them. There is also the distinct possibility of an external DAP that just ships off a bytestream via the more conventional means (though surely that would go for a premium)

Actually since it only costs $200 to make if initial sales are bad they are more likely to lower the price.

You mean triangulation...I still prefer the more accurate and dependable GPS, anyway...oh well.

Yeah, but isn't "Assisted GPS" just cell tower triangulation anyway. I remember someone in another thread explaining that it was and that it was really inaccurate - far to inaccurate to use it for real location based services, let alone navigation.

If this is true, then I guess the bigger question is, what the hell have developers been doing for the past year and a half?

Spending half their time and energy trying to figure out how to squeeze things into the smallish screen of the iPhone. Did you see the calendar app during the iPad demonstration? It was absolutely gorgeous. Compare that to the calendar app on the iPhone. Now take any other iPhone app and imagine how it could look if it was improved as much as the calendar app.

Not exactly, the difference between GPS and Assisted GPS (in very simple layman's terms since so many people get confused with this) is that devices that have GPS (Garmin, etc.) connect to a satellite which can sometimes take a full minute (or more depending on your location on the planet) where as Assisted GPS devices (iPhone, et al) first get a quick triangulation with cell towers then sends that to the Satellite basically saying "we are roughly here" giving a quicker connection to the GPS satellite... so Assisted GPS is actually better and faster and still uses Satellite like non-assisted GPS in addition to Cell Tower triangulation. Makes sense?

Or for the official description:

Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, is a system which can improve the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.[1]

It's a very narrow minded view that doesn't see how this device will plug into many different careers, in all walks of life.
