Amid declining iPhone sales, Apple today said in its Q2 2019 earnings report that the iPad saw its strongest growth in six years.

Apple's iPad sales hit $4.9 billion in Q2 2019, up from $4 billion in the year-ago quarter, marking a 22 percent increase in revenue.

Apple in October 2018 introduced all new iPad Pro models that eschew the Touch ID Home button in favor of a Face ID biometric system, allowing for a larger display area. Apple says that the iPad's revenue growth was largely due to a strong customer response to the iPad Pro.

In March, Apple added to its iPad lineup with a new $499 iPad Air option, which serves as a middle tier offering between the iPad Pro and the $329 sixth-generation iPad.

Apple also introduced a new version of the iPad mini, marking the 7.9-inch tablet's first update in several years. Both the iPad Air and the iPad mini 5 support the Apple Pencil, enabling Apple Pencil integration across Apple's entire iPad lineup.

I’d say it isn’t just because of the redesign, it’s because they are offering middle tier iPads starting $329 for the entry level/educational sector and the $499 iPad Air, which is giving consumers cheaper options to choose from the more expensive iPad Pro’s. Consumers want choices, not the most expensive iPad models to choose from.

With the sales we've seen lately on just about the entire iPad line-up (including some pretty major sales on the iPad Pro) - I can't say I'm too surprised.

iPad is not a computer. iPad is not a computer replacement. iOS is not an appropriate OS for large iPads.

I'm reminded of this each time I want to exclusively use my iPad Pro for photography. Apple limits photo import only to the Photos app, their Photos app can not do manual metadata editing, importing and exporting photos in and out of the Photos app causes reduction in quality. Etcetera.

The iPad Pro's true potential can never be realized due to it's crippling OS.

But, profits. So, anyway.

It certainly is.

I’m typing this on my 11” iPad Pro. It really is a gorgeous machine and probably my favorite Apple device. Super slim. Great display. Face ID works well. Lightweight. Etc. Etc.

I have the Pencil waiting to be opened too. I fancied the Smart Keyboard but it really did feel like junk when I looked at it the other day.

Yup. There was a period of time where the iPad was fairly stagnant for years, not so much because it’s not useful, it’s just that really wasn’t offering a lot in terms of change, until now with Face ID and the middle tier iPads that are much cheaper under the iPad pros.

The 2019 iPad Mini is the first iPad I’ve purchased. It’s the perfect size for travel, great display, A12 is awesome, $399.

It’s funny though. The changes you listed are a different way to unlock the screen and cheaper versions of traditional iPads. That’s not exactly innovative. It seems like ios13 may start to break that if the rumors of mouse support and windows of apps comes true.

I’d say Face ID is fairly innovative for what it offers, but what are you expecting that the iPad should offer that should be considered innovative?

Seems close to this. Which is a bit scary, as when they did the same to iPhone it also raised before crashing down.

Lightroom does not export edited RAWs, only edited JPEGs, therefore full quality, roundtrip editing is not possible. Lightroom also does not support Live Photos, nor have direct integration with iCloud, so it's not a full replacement for the Photos app.

It's innovative tech for sure, and it's nice to not have to reach for the home button, but I don't know if it changes the way you use it though. I'd like to see them do what a lot of other people have been asking for (real file system, mouse support, desktop browser)

Raw edits are never part of the actual Raw file; if it did then it would no longer be a Raw file. They’re usually stored as a sidecar xml file. But sure, I’ve never used Lightroom before.
