Hopefully in the coming days the iPhone gets some new inner-workings (16GB / HSDPA) there is for sure no chance in hell for a 5 MP but the NAND and 3.5G for sure would make up for it.

Hey All,

Just a quick question if i go to the o2 shop will i have to activate it at the shop or does it get done with itunes?

Ross

"unlimited with limits"
I await a report from the first person to leave their iPhone downloading 24 hours a day for a month ;).

It seems to further confirm that Apple isn't (officially) interested in allowing me to use an iPhone as a laptop modem, which I've been doing with my mobiles since 1999 (first on regular GSM dialup).

I'm American but have been living in Germany for the past 4 years. As if it didn't kill me enough watching the U.S. launch this summer from overseas, the German plan really rubbed salt in the wounds.

Anybody esle in my shoes? I don't mind paying early adopter premiums to get my gadgets early, but to do so every month is such a travesty.

Looks like I'll be watching yet another launch date go by, waiting for the next revision and for prices to come down.

Hmmm, Germany will be an interesting launch: USD 70,- for ...

USD is not an accepted currency in Germany, so somehow I think you are wrong. If Apple advertised a phone in Germany with a price tag of USD 70 the chances of being sued would be one hundred percent. And thousands of lawyers in Germany would just send them a letter "Sorry guys, but advertising a price in USD where everyone else advertises in Euros is misleading consumers and therefore unfair competition. Please send €100 to my bank account for my efforts writing this nice letter to you".

Best news all week! Unlimited data on the iPhone? I'm there baby :D maybe not launch day. since it's on Friday and I can't afford the bugger after giving up on the iPhone and going on a spending spree. Unlimited is good. Very good. Thanks Apple, Thapple.

Has anyone confirmed if you must sign up for a contact on purchase of the iPhone in the UK Apple stores?

Seems a bit strange they haven't - it's almost like they're helping out unlockers.... I imagine the only reason it could be is because the apple employee's may not be authorised to set up contracts....

£269 for the initial thing.
18 month contract at minimum £35 per month:

A nice round figure of £899 to own the iPhone for 18 months. How many people, even among us mac users, can justify that?? Maybe if your employer was paying the bills, but which company would pick an iPhone over a blackberry type thing?

Mobile phone pricing is one of the most ridiculous things these days. A 5kB text message costs nearly the same as a 500kB voice conversation.

I'll be sticking with my £40 nokia and my £10 p/m O2 sim. 300 free texts per month - more than the £35 iphone contract...

Isn't phone-unlocking some sort of consumer-right thing over here? After all, you pay the for the contract if you've signed it, even if you never even switch your phone on...

I believe it's only unlocked after 6 months, so does that mean in 6 months time you can buy one, or you have to use it for 6 months before you can unlock it, I don't know, but it's 6 months from whenever it's released regardless.

hmm thats not whats being said elsewhere

So can i just go in O2 and pick up the iPhone without registering there?

As i have already said YES!

I also said look at o2.co.uk and google all the information you have asked for has been out since september 18th!

As a:

Apple Certified Technical Coordinator
Apple Certified Helpdesk Specialist

I would have thought you would have been 1) more clued up about apple products especially given the US example of iphone activation and 2) Smart enough to look at google and o2.co.uk for your answer, or heaven forbid pick up a phone and call o2 and maybe 3) able to not ask the question again once it had already been answered

What happens if the iPhone breaks irreparable, gets lost or even stolen (the latter being quite likely), do the customers
get a replacement (even if they have to pay 399 again) without having to sign for a new contract or maybe even the old contract must ceased, due to the exclusivity and the fact the customer is not able to make use of the telco service without the hardware (similar situation like when moving house...). There is no word from T-Mobile yet, but by german laws I have my doubts that customers can be forced to stay in a contract without the possibllity to replace the exclusively required hardware...

There's a warranty for if it breaks, which means it'll be either (a) fixed, or (b) replaced. If it's lost or stolen, it's not their fault, so why should O2 let them out of their contract, or Apple give them a free replacement? This is no different from any other contract - you lose your phone, you pay a penalty.

If you're worried about it, insure it. Simple as.

if i turn up at the regent street store at 6pm on friday, does anyone have a guess how long the wait will be? thanks

Don't these launches in Europe (and the eventual ones in Canada and Australia later this year or early next) kind of kill the idea what we will see iPhone 2.0 unveiled at MWSF? If a new iPhone is announced it will pretty much kill the current iPhone sales in the rest of the world where it has just been introduced.

I think Apple will wait till at least May or June to announce a new version to be sold starting in Q4 2008 all simultaneously across the world.

Agreed , unless it is an addition to the line rather than a replacement ... then it would not matter I guess.

Alright People?

Just a quick one, I was thinkin of getting the iPhone this friday in the UK but im aware the software has been updated to 1.1.2. I want to unlock the phone so should i buy it and just keep it in the box until someone releases an unlocker for 1.1.2? Any ideas on whats the best thing to do?

Cheers!

I'm in the same boat as you. My plan is to grab the phone on Friday anyway. My hope is that the firmware can be downgraded to 1.1.1 (in the same fashion as the 1.1.1 -> 1.0.2 downgrade). Indications I've picked up are that it probably can, but the baseband will remain at the 1.1.2 level so unlocking won't be an option, until the dev team releases a new unlocker. However, at least it'll be usable as an iPod for the time being.

Warranty or Insurance is not the point here at all.

I think you haven't understood the point of my question, its not the hardware its the contract which continues to run, I can insure the hardware but the customer would maybe have to sign up for a new contract thats defnitely not only a customer problem even if he broke the iphone himself!? These are two separate things, its not that if I get money from the insurance to replace the hardware, but the issue is the exclusivity bundled with hardware! Thats a new situation. Without phone and the possiblity to replace it even with payment would make it impossible to make use of the signed contract, therefore there is no basis for the contract anymore, little example if you move the house though your hommephone contract would still run for some month, there is nevertheless no basis for the service anymore so you just can cancel it. So what I mean is the customer MUST have the possibility to get back and be able to use the exclusive tarif even if the phone gets lost or stolen, of course this risk must financially be covered and basically the customer will have to pay for it somehow but my poinit is THERE IS NO WORD FROM ANYBODY HOW THIS "PROCESS" WOULD WORK, or did I miss something! I hope I might myself clear now :)

PS don't forget that the mobile tariffs do contain special services like the visual voicebox which is only usable with the iphone!

I feel your pain. I can't get out of my current contract with Vodafone until March, so it's not so bad. The deal-clincher for me is WiFi access. Since I travel a lot and spend lots of time in Germany train stations - all of which have T-Com HotSpots - the iPhone would make stuff like 3G and MMS totally irrelevant. Honestly, who would whop down the fee required to send an MMS when one could achieve the same result through email virtually for free?
